QUOTE
PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - An Oregon high school English teacher will not be allowed to carry her gun to school, a state circuit court ruled on Friday in a decision closely watched by both sides of the gun debate.

Shirley Katz, who has a legal permit to carry a concealed handgun, argued she needed the Glock semi-automatic pistol to protect herself from her ex-husband. She sued the school district when it told her carrying a gun was against a district policy prohibiting guns.

Circuit Judge G. Philip Arnold agreed with the district, saying "The District has a right to enforce this policy." he noted that employees "accept their jobs subject to, and knowing, the policy."

"We are pleased," said Dr. Phil Long, superintendent of the Medford School District. "This case was a distraction from our real mission, which is educating children."

The teacher had support from pro-gun rights groups. In light of multiple school shootings, some gun advocates have argued that teachers, and maybe even students, should be armed to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In April, a student shot dead 32 people at Virginia Tech University and earlier this week a gun-wielding student killed eight people at a high school in Finland.

"I was not particularly surprised," said Kevin Starrett, executive director of the Oregon Firearms Federation, whose group paid the teacher's legal bills and is discussing an appeal.

what do u think about a teacher carrying a gun on campus?

That's a tough one. It is our right to bear arms, but she's a teacher. I can see why she wouldn't be allowed to carry it at school, but then again she needs to protect herself from her crazy ex-husband.

Well there's a lot of pro's and con's of the fact the she's bringing in a fully loaded firearm. Seeing all these shootings in school campuses would give the teacher a good reason to protect herself. But it's for a ex-husband! Whatever happened to a restraining order. blink.gif

Elementary/Middle/High school teachers, in my opinion, should not be able to bring a gun to school. It's tough for that teacher, but if she really wants to wield a gun she can find another higher paying job (lol).

I do, however, believe that a college professor should be allowed to wield one, and think that if she really wants to teach and is not allowed to at a lower level of education, she could further her career and become a prof.

^ i agree

i think college professors should be allowed to. i can't help but think of how different the v-tech thing could have been if a teacher had had a gun.

This issue was brought up at my school a couple years ago when two boys brought guns to school and tried to kill a lot of students. The thing is, though, is how do you teach that violence is wrong if the teachers themselves are bringing guns to school? What if a teacher snaps at a kid and shoots them? I know that sounds like a strange question, but we all know how teachers can get annoyed and blowup at kids. What if they have a gun, so instead of just yelling at the kid and excusing them from class they act irrationally and shoot them?

^true

however, the way i look at it which is more likely. i guess there's that chance that a crazy teacher could blow up and shoot a kid, but the chances are better (in my opinion) that it would be the other way around, students blowing up and shooting people.

ew Glock. She should've got a HK USP Tactical, Walther PPK, or an Beretta 92.

Yes I'm thinking about this even though I'm supposed to be thinking of the issue at stake.

Its called a order of f**king protection.

I don't feel its acceptable for a educator to walk around big pimpin with a gun.f**k that if she gets too then everyone else should too.Ive had crazy ex boyfriends you dont see me walking around with a gun.A lot of people have relationships that went sour and there are peaceful ways of having that taken care of.And with security as it is nowadays theres no way her ex can march up into the school without getting flagged down somehow.
