Scary. So next time you pirate something, realize that you're helping move music, movies and software to what is mentioned in the last paragraph.

as far as the last paragraph goes...I can see why they would turn to advertising to make up for loss in sales, but honestly you can advertise all you want and it's really not going to influence me one way or the other to run out and buy the product.

It's not like on my 20th ad for Coca-cola I don't want any and on the 21st ad I miraculously just HAVE TO HAVE IT!!

ya know??

I think you might have missed the point. Max Barry is saying, books, movies, software and music will be given out for free, but they are going to be laced with ads. Would you like to read a book that had an advertisement on every other page? I don't, but it's already happening.. Do you want to watch a movie, only to have it interrupted every 10 mins for an ad? I wouldn't, but it's already happening. Do you want to listen to a cd, only to have an ad play every few songs? Me neither, but it's already here. Magazines, TV and Radio. 24/7. No escape.

No I didn't miss the point at all and yes it would suck, especially as far as movies go, but hell if I had a book with ads in it then I would just turn the page faster and be one more page closer to the end, or rip them out all together. CD's you could just toss em on the PC and copy the song files and burn a new one. I'm simply saying that a scare tactic such as this isn't going to sway people from getting it for free. I'm not all into pirating stuff, hell i don't even have any music on my PC, but the ones that do haven't been scared off by lawsuits and losing their computers so I hardly doubt this will steer them in the right direction

Anyways I understand what it's all about I'm just simply saying that they always return to old faithful (advertising) and that's not gonna pay all the bills either; however, as a Graphic designer it will pay my bills shifty.gif . The internet itself is laced with ads but it doesn't make me click on their banners and buy their stuff.

What can they do?? If I knew that answer I'd be richer than Bill Gates

Personally, I wouldn't mind reading ads when reading books. Makes it easier on the eyes shifty.gif

But on a serious note, I have tried to cut down on pirating stuff recently, so I'm helping to relieve some of the burden.

What if the ad was in the middle of the content? Like, there was a small ad between each paragraph? What if the ads were appended to the song files? Now this is the scariest part. What if the songs and ads blended together? What would you do if you were reading a book with the plot centered around chicken mcnuggets or listened to a song about nike shoes?

even so, we should try to get others to stop as well.

But anyway when you think about it, ads are popping up everwhere. It's becoming so bad that it's resulted to all that adware crap that comes into people's computer. When you think about it, 5 years ago, pop up ads didn't bother me that much becuase they rarely poppped up, even w/o a pop up blocker. I know this may seem irrelevant, but the fact is, that all that adware stuff is coming into our computers, trying to get our credit card numbers, false advertisement. etc. Because they want money.

And now, more and more ads are popping up because companies are trying their hardest to advertise, even if one is using a pop-up blocker. And many of those pop-ups are about celling cds, magazine, signing up for stuff yoiu have to pay for, etc. Just think, if filesharing gets worse and worse, more ads will pop up. You're right, it's already happening. Even under our very nose.

Sorry if my argument seems a little well... confusing. All I'm saying is that now, pop ups and ads on the computer/internet is getting worse ever since the filesharing started.. around 4 to 5 years back.

well like I said before...what are ya gonna do?? I mean all you can do is your part, which I've already stated "I don't do piracy", but there's umpteen million other people out there who could honestly care less...they see FREE and that's what it's all about to them.

Personally, I'm more subliminal messages.

On a more serious note, I'd perfer advertising to copyright "blocking". The best solution is to limit copyrights to the lifetime of the author, thus removing the middleman.

Either way it's fine by me.

that's a thought-provoking article fer sure. i am def. going to e-mail it to my p2p-junkie friends. i haven't pirated anything beyond borrowing friends' legitimate cd's or computer games, but it sure is scary that the file sharing world could corrupt our precious movies/books/etc. forever!

blink.gif hmm...maybe they should stop wasting their freaking money and put it to better use...like umm maybe...having movie theatres with night vision cams? uhduhhhhhhhhh....then they could monitor the place and nobody could film it...and besides, we are the people, and authors write for the people, and if they put ads the people won't buy books because it's so goddamn annoying when youre reading LOTR, then you flip a page only to find a goddamned add for victoria secret. oh wait...that's good... huh.gif ...Back to my point:

nobody will buy books if their are ads in them.
people without the money to have access to internet/computers will still buy books.
