Another thing that gets me is that some Brazilians call themselves Latinas, when actually most are descendants from Africa and/or Portugal. Just like dominicans, cubans, etc. Mexicans are actually Native American descendants. Not really latino. Alot of people from these countries didnt even want to be called until it was "considered" to be "cool". Basically hispanic is a heritage for most people and not actually a race. If you go to any country in whats considered "latin america"... you'll see native americans [or indians], those of african descent, and european descent. Are they hispanic? I think not. They just have hispanic heritage. Thats why in america, on the census..you'd see non-hispanic whites, non-hispanic blacks, hispanic, asian, black, white, etc.

Latin America refers to the area of America in which the Romance (or Latin derived) languages are predominantly spoken. It has nothing to do with being "hispanic" or "latino" or even any race for that matter. Nor did i say anything about what you should call yourself. There's alot of black people that call themselves African American even though they werent born in africa..just like American born Puerto Ricans, Filipinos, etc. Given that Im of Afro Brasilian & Creole descent [even though I just say Im black]...I was stating an alternative view to yours.


Oh and to call Americans stupid because some make generalizations of a specific group of people is ignorant in itself. These types of things happen in tons of countries across the world. Of course people are going to generalize others. I mean, there's no definite appearance that constitutes as a race. My friend's Mexican, but she looks like she's some other race.

BTW, some people get ethnicity confused with nationality. If a Spanish person is born in Mexico, that automatically makes them of Mexican nationality (I believe... but I'm not too familiar with the way things go over there in terms of citizenship), but they are of Spanish descent. TECHNICALLY it would be correct to call them Spanish and/or Mexican. That's like calling me American, Chinese, or Vietnamese.
