a college offers a bunch of different degrees, while a university has a collection of colleges. i go to a university and so ill graduate from that university's art college, others graduate from their business college, ect. colleges are usually smaller than universities. a lot of colleges u can't get graduate degrees from either

as far as institutes, i don't really get that, but i always thought it was for technical subjects

a college is an institution of higher learning, esp. one providing a general or liberal arts education rather than technical or professional training

a university is an institution of learning of the highest level, having a college of liberal arts and a program of graduate studies together with several professional schools, as of theology, law, medicine, and engineering, and authorized to confer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Continental European universities usually have only graduate or professional schools

and an institute is usually created only to teach you a trade or skill and their programs are usually not meant to include the social sciences that are included in a college or university education.
