I'm trying to start making my first layout and I'm on photoshop ready to go but I'm not sure how big to make the document? If someone could give me a sample size to start off witht that would be great! Thank you!

You can pretty much make it any size that you want. Just take into consideration that different browsers are different sizes, and you don't want to have a horizontal scrollbar where you didn't want one. I'd recommend a width of no more that 800px (esspecially for us poor dialup users.)

^She couldnt have stated it more perfect. But, I usualy just like to start off with 700px x 700px. It depends on what you're going for. Just make sure the image doesnt take too long to load for all internet conntections/browsers.

you can make a background pattern whatever size, but like karmakiller said 'usually no more than 800px', as long as it can repeat over in the fashion that a pattern usually does. If you're a beginner you should start with polka dots or stripes, something easy and simple, then work your way into harder designs!
