My boyfriend has diabetic genes(him and his father are diabetic)...My mother tells me that if I ever plan on having children with him, it would be selfish towards our kids on account that they might have diabetes also. Since its not a terminal illness, I didn't really stress it...But after a while it got me thinking...I see what his dad goes through (he had his leg below the knee and his right foot amputated) and it makes me wonder if having kids is worth the hardships they may go through as well. I don't know how to handle this. I know I'm still young but I know I want my own children some day. I love him so much and I know I would love to build a family with him some day.

Well, I wouldn't stress about it unless you are seriously planning on having kids with this guy.

If its just teenage love I wouldent worry about it. If you are older and consider getting married and having kids its a bigger issue. Like Suzzette said: "if you don't treat yourself right, and you don't take care of it, it will cause other illnesses and you will die" the chances of that are slim but you just have to make sure that your kids will take good care of it, if they do, you have nothing to worry about. My grandpa has diabeties and hes perfectly normal. Its a disease you can live with.

Yeah see in my familly it's always been the men that carried or developed diabetes. I'm the only female in my family that carries it... lucky me. But yeah I'm still going to risk the kids because even if both parents have Diabetes and everything, doesn't mean the kid will get it. And if my kids were to have it I'd still treat them like regular kids.
but yeah don't freak about it unless you two are seriously considering marriage and stuff. |

Diabetes runs on both sides of my family. My father was diagnosed with it after me, my brother, and my sister was born. A person can live with it if they are eating the right things and (for my father's case) taking insulin when needed. Just because you're boyfriend has it doesn't mean his children will. Even though, the chances of them diagnosed later on is possibly. I don't know the statistics involving all of that, though.

Just adopt. Why does everyone HAVE to get pregnant? I wouldn't mind adopting. I've considered it many of times. That was actually what I planned to do all my life. But since I don't see my relationship as just teenage love, having a child some day with my boyfriend feels right. I don't mean to sound sappy though...lol Oh, and for those who asked, I'm 20. |

my mom has diabetes. my 2nd mother has diabetes (not related..just my moms best friend) both my uncles have it, my grandma had it, my greate uncle had it
its major in my moms side of the family. and i know i'll have it later on in life. but i dont think its really that bad. as long as you take your insulin and/or pills, and eat a good diet, and watch your blood sugars.. its not something to really worry about from what i understand as long as you take care of it and i dont believe its something to not have kids over. maybe they wont get that certain gene! idk how old you are, or how long you've been in a relationship with this guy.. but dont let it keep you from having kids when you do get that far. i mean, i know i wont. my mom has been diabetic since she had my sister, 10 years ago. and had a kind of diabetes when she was pregnant with me and my brother (dont remember what its called) and shes moving along in life just great cuz she takes care of herself. and so is/was anyone else in my family that has it an old friend of mine has diabetes and it doesnt keep him from doing anything. yeah, it is a horrible disease but as far as i have seen its nothing to not have kids over |

Stop listening to your hormones and start listening to your heart. There are so many healthy kids that need homes, but everyone has to have a baby now a-days. "LOL HE HAS MY HUSBANDS FACE LOL" How about we all reach out every once and awhile? |

^Dang, just let her have an opinion. She said she considered adoption very many times, didn't she? If she wants to have a kid with her own body, then let her go for it.

Stop listening to your hormones and start listening to your heart. There are so many healthy kids that need homes, but everyone has to have a baby now a-days. "LOL HE HAS MY HUSBANDS FACE LOL" How about we all reach out every once and awhile? How about we start having responsible and prepared people have babies, so there wouldn't be any need to put babies up for adoption? I have diabetes, type one. I'm the only one in my entire family who has it. I don't know how I got it, but reading up on a few articles a few months ago, they say that you can have the diabetic gene without being diabetic. That there is some sort of trigger either environmentally or biologically that activates the gene, resulting in one having diabetes. Sure, diabetes has a lot of complications, short-term and long-term. But taking care of yourself if you have diabetes will greatly help you avoid those complications. The chances of having a diabetic child from birth aren't high, actually. I'm not sure about any birth defect possibilities or probabilities with diabetic males having children, but I know of the risks with a female diabetic being pregnant. The main focus while being pregnant and being diabetic, is just to make sure you take of your diabetes very well, making sure your blood sugars are in control and not all over the place. I doubt that having diabetes in either male or female partners who are trying to have a baby should be a big factor in deciding to choose against having a child. Just have control over the diabets, and you, your partner, and child will be fine. What type of diabetes does he have anyway? |

^ I'm sure you're NOT forcing Asian babies down her throat. And if she DOES consider adoption, who said she was going to adopt an ASIAN baby in the first place?
You make it sound like diabetic people are NOT healthy, when they can lead healthy lives. Sure, they might have to go extra measures to do things other people can... but that doesn't they can't LEAD healthy lives. |

Last time I checked I was on the internet, not at her house forcing Asian babies down her throat. Personally, I don't think being on the internet is an excuse to be excessive and rude about your opinions. I'm pretty sure she can make her own decisions. I agree, adoption is a great option, but you don't have the right to criticize her just because she wants a biological child. |

How is ignoring the need making things better to you? I just think that if people would actually think more about the consequences and risks that can follow having sex, then people having unwanted babies wouldn't have to put their children up for adoption because they weren't prepared to take care of it. I didn't say adoption was a bad thing or anything like that. It's just sad that children are put into that situation. Personally, I don't think being on the internet is an excuse to be excessive and rude about your opinions. I'm pretty sure she can make her own decisions. I agree, adoption is a great option, but you don't have the right to criticize her just because she wants a biological child. I agree. You make it sound like being pregnant because you want to give birth is a bad thing. |
