Microsoft Word, Table of Contents

Does anyone know much about generating a Table of Contents in word? I clicked generate and it just popped up with some things starting at like 3.1 and listing a few things then stopping.

How do I incorporate a new page or spot into the table of contents? Can I just highlight something and tell it to place itself in the table of contents?
