Memoirs of a Geisha was really good. So was The DaVinci Code (IN MY OPINION). I can't think of any more that I really liked besides that one.

I think generally we can agree that books made into movies suck. I mean, there's only two ways it can turn out. Either the director tries to follow the book exactly, the like da vinci code, and the movie becomes just a boring revisualiation of the book, or the director takes their own license with the book, and people hate it.

there is the rare occasions in which these don't really hinder books; as when a book isn't really ingrained in popular culture, or is so engrained in popular culture that we as a populace won't mind either of these senarios. The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are pretty good examples.

so i get the feeling this is becoming more of a "pick which movie you like that also used to be a book", rather than anything truely dealing with books.

that being said, i truly enjoyed fight club.

however; i cannot speak for how any book has been rendered into a movie; i don't know of any truly exemplary case. that's not to say one doesn't exist, just that it's probably unlikely.

The new Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite movies biggrin.gif Memoirs of a Geisha was good too.

All of the Disney classics are good. They're based off of very old stories, like the Grimms Brother's tales.

for all those who said eragon was gd im sorry i have 2 disagree! it was dire compared 2 the book!!!!

but then gain we all have opions!! i much love the books compared 2 movies most of the time because there is so much u can do with a book but hardly anything wid a film!

i found harry potter good first two but then its starting to become 2 much cut and alot shorter versions of the films!!

the new pirates of the carrabean was 2 mins longer than the nu harry potter comin out!! the new harry potter should b at least half hour longer i feel!! but then i still ave 2 see it

Likes: thumbsup.gif

- Harry Potter series
- The Notebook (I actually thought the movie was better than the book)
- Lord of the Rings
- Tuesdays with Morrie
- Pride and Prejudice
- Emma (at least the Gwyneth Paltrow version)
- Bridge to Terabithia
- Holes
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Matilda
- How The Grinch Stole Christmas biggrin.gif
- The Pursuit of Happyness
- What Dreams May Come
- The Odyssey
- The Iliad (movie name: Troy)
- The Outsiders

Dislikes: thumbdown.gif

- Nancy Drew (i didn`t even see the movie. it`s not even worth it. they ruined the books. why the hell would you pick Emma Roberts out of all the actresses in Hollywood to play Nancy Drew?!?! ugh. i get angry just talking about it.)
- A Walk to Remember (too many changes)
- The Devil Wears Prada (don`t get me wrong. meryl streep was amazing as Miranda Priestly, but i didn`t like Anne Hathaway as much. plus, there were a lot of changes done in the movie. i hated the fact that they changed the ending completely.)
- (The) Children of Men (just too slow)
- The Da Vinci Code (i didn`t think Tom Hanks was the right person to play Robert Langdon)

Upcoming Ones That I'm Rooting For:

- Angels & Demons
- The Nanny Diaries
- P.S. I Love You

In my opinon, The Notebook movie was better than the book shrug.gif

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory were both good movie adaptions of the book.

Holes was deffinately cute; I read that book so many times in gradeschool.

Oh and after reading monxcheri's post... How the Grinch Stole Christmas is good too. I'm surprised they were able to make a full-length movie out of a short book, lol.

J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
Stephen King's The Mist
Stephen King's Cujo

I thought the film, The Mist, was certified GENIUS. I loved how the 'monsters' weren't even the focus, and this only emphasized how savage the people really were. I'd continue rambling about it, but this topic really isn't the place. And I'm tired.

Matilda, Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Full Metal Jacket, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not the new one).

The first and second Harry Potter movies are the only ones true to the book. The more they go on, the more they leave out. The fifth one was so rushed and so much was left out that I think people who didn't read the books would be confused when seeing the sixth one.

Lord of the Rings. I think they stayed true to the story, but at the same time omitted parts that the audience really didn't need to know.

I don't get why Lord of the Rings is that ineresting. I could never finish the movie. I watched only 5 minutes of it, got bored, and left the room. =/.

I'd have to pick The Notebook and The Outsiders. Outsiders was actually more interesting in book than movie. It had more intensity and feel when I was reading it (it was for English class....) but the movie was pretty good as well. It actually kept most of its points and didn't change it (like how most movies would). I've never read the Memoirs of a Geisha, but I definitely plan to after watching the movie. The movie definitely kept me interested.

^agreed

i think the movies coming out lately are just sad (not the emotion). i mean, they're either
remakes of older versions
sequels
based on books
or form a tv show

nothing is that original anymore. could this world really have run out of ideas? O.o

well, anyway, The Kite Runner.
the book was by khaled hosseini

and Persepolis. a book i didnt know was made into a movie until recently. note, i heard it only came out in france. whats up with that? O.o

this may seem a bit juvenile, but i loved alfonso cuaron's version of a little princess. i like the original story, but his version seemed cleaner, with less filler, and way more creative --aesthetically(compared to the original black and white movie with sherly temple) and story-line wise (compared to the book).

come to think of it, i also favor cuaron's version of prisoner of azkaban over the book.

All the nominees for Best Original Screenplay were not adapted.

^ Yeah, It did. I still haven't watched the whole thing yet though.

I was really upset by the Series of Unfortunate Events movies. I actually would have rather them not been made into movies at all. It was just too awkward, especially since they aren't planning on finishing the series.

i just watched the kite runner, and of course the book was so much better, but i felt like the director did a pretty okay job with it-even though there were two scenes that i really wanted to see that ended up not being in the movie sad.gif

I know you guys are speaking specifically about books turned into movies. But I really dislike comic books being turned into movies. They ruin the story line beyond belief.

I would agree with you, for the most part.

Sin City, Ghost World, and A History of Violence are notable exceptions.

I think some comic book inspired films are great. Most just fall flat.

Good examples. If you've read Sin City, you'd see that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (the author) followed the books in finite detail. You can actually 'read' the movie, panel by panel in some cases. I think that is easily the most true to a graphic novel (novels) I have ever seen as far as movie translations go.

Ghost World actually strays quite a bit from the original, but the film itself was well done.

LOTR. Only LOTR. Every other book turned into film, sucked. Unless I never read the book then... well I can't judge it.

My question to you, Tama, is why do they suck? Do they suck because they're bad films or do they "suck" because they strayed so much from the original work?

Oh and examples please. I love examples. ^_^

I really enjoyed the movie "V for Vendetta", despite how people say it ruined the graphic novel... mind you, I've never read it.
"Memoirs of a Geisha" is a really good book, but the movie was only mediocre.
I can't wait till the movie based on Michael Crichton's "Prey" comes out!

For example, if you read the Hobbit and watch LOTR... it pretty much followed the whole storyline. Then if you're a big spiderman fan... and you read all the comics then watch spiderman... they completely destroy the storyline in spider man 3. It was like part 2 was fallin out of story line, then part 3 became the director's own fantasy. Such complete bullshit =\

@Tama -
Oh continuity? Don't even get me started. Gwen, for one, would have been dead long before any of these events took place. Harry never died like that, although he did somewhat reconcile with Peter as he died. I could seriously go on, but I'll spare the community members. ;)

You mentioned LOTR, but you realize that the gratuitous Aragon/Arwen scenes are downright insulting, right? Two very loved characters, Faramir and Eowyn have far more book time (together) and got a hand shake. Where's the friggin love Peter Jackson?

omg.gif Each movie is like 3.5 hours long man <,< the books alone were thick as hell lol.
But you're right... I honestly agree with you and that's a good call out. I remember when I went with my friend, after the movie we were walkin out... and he looked all confused. His cousin questioned him wonder if he maybe left something behind in the theater and my friend just stops and yells out, "WHAT THE f**k!!! THERE'S SOMETHING MISSING IN THE MOVIE AND I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT!!"

I completely missed it, I haven't read the hobbit since back in 1994-1998 (the whole series/collection)

^Dittooo. Those movies were nothing compared to the books. The last one was totally surprising, imo.

Something that either ends really well or in a total disaster. Maybe it's because some books just don't translate well onto film? or some directors just suck ermm.gif

Just a few off the top of my head.

A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket = amazing.

Was Heart of Darkness actually the name of the movie? Or are you talking about Apocalypse Now.

I'm talking about Apocalypse Now.

And, concerning Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange:
A large portion of Kubrick's filmography is comprised of very thoughtful and affective adaptations (Lolita, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, etc. etc.)

just watched the movie version of love in the time of cholera and i don't think i liked it that much. true, the director did a good job considering how much detail and in-depth marquez was in the book, but i think some parts were kind of changed to make it hollywood-ish.

but i was surprised and pleased with the actors that were in it~javier bardem, benjamin bratt, and john leguizamo wub.gif

edit//k, i haven't read pride and prejudice yet, but i finally watched the whole movie and it's seriously one of my favorites now. throb.gif
