I have a friend at VTech, and I got to her through facebook, so I'm feeling so relieved.

She lives in East Ambler Johnston, right beside the dorm where the shootings took place.

They just released that the gunman committed suicide. This is awful. I can't believe that they didn't shut down the campus after the first shootings at West Ambler Johnston.

my heart and sympathy goes out to the victims and their families. may those who died rest in peace.

It's really horrible. It's almost hard to believe that it actually happened but it did. I'm absolutely heartbroken by it. It's terrible to think that someone would actually do that. I pray for the victims' families. It's a horrifying and dreadful incident. I give them all my sympathies and prayers.

This is so terrible. Last I heard the number was up to 33 deaths. sad.gif

I cant believe after the first shooting at 7:00, they didnt bother to properly inform all the students. All they did was send out emails... who the heck checks their email that early in the morning? The school was equipped with emergency alarms, which were never set off. It's almost like they continued classes like it was no big deal. I cant help but to imagine, what if they would have locked down the school properly? The additional 30 deaths could have possibly been prevented.

You're right, this incident can happen anywhere else. So why does this incident deserve special treatment. Nobody bats an eye at the people dying in Africa of AIDs or even at that one forsaken place called Darfur. Nobody bats an eye at the diamond mines they have in Niger. Nobody batted an eye at the school shooting that happened in Quebec a couple months back. But this deserves special treatment. Human sincerity, what a joke.

I agree that sincerity is questionable especially in cases like these where not everyone is directly affected but I don't think that it's right to generalize everyone in that category...

I agree, I will generalize that for 90% of the population.

Strangely, I always had an irking feeling that something tragic would happen on a college campus. Given all the protests, the occasional riot, the bomb threats that happened infrequently; all thanks to young men and women struggling to find themselves in a world where beliefs clash. I don't know what this guy's motives were, but the likelihood of it happening (on any college campus where people push the lines of extremism), has always been pretty high.

In a situation like this, what do you do? Lock down a college campus like a military base? Set up gate guards and ahve metal detectors? Make people carry clear backpacks and wear uniforms? Cut back on political activism and multiculturalism? What can you do? I had a Glock 22 in college (and in high school), but it certainly wasn't for a killing spree, it was in case karma kicked in or if something incredibly scary happened.

On the contrary , there are people who give a damn and do all they can to help out with AIDS in Africa like Alicia Keys. What about Oprah building a school for disadvantaged kids in Africa? So you think no one knows about the diamond mines although last year Kanye blazed the air waves with Diamonds are forever, and the movie Blood Diamond came out late part of last year. And for the record the Quebec shooting was all over CNN the day it happened.

Hey hey, I didn't know Alicia Keys, Oprah, Kanye, and movie producers did this out of the will of their good hearts soley. Oh, I also didnt know that these four people represent all of America! I'm sure I have a part of Oprah in me somewhere.

EDIT : Sure, people know about them. They bat an eye at them and go "oh, damn poor people living in crappy places and working for such crappy wages." Then they go back to eating fillet mignon.

KC: I agree. All it takes is a spark to burn the place down. Who knows, this may be the beginning of violence to come. People need to get a grip on shit, man. Our society is deteriorating from within.

Robbi A!: Agreed. Blood Diamond was damn good.

th4567890: I see what you're getting at, but don't try to downplay one topic because you feel as though another is more important. Example; what if you knew someone or had family at Virginia Tech and they fell victim to the mass murderer? Would you give two shits about terminal illness in Africa then?

Cute.

So is it even worth asking why you even bothered to post here and comment about the event? Actually, no, don't answer that. Stay in your bubble. You're better off there.

"Ignoring awareness is worse than being aware of your own ignorance."

SONNED.

Moving on...

What shocks me more than anything, is that the news here (Global Armed Forces Network) is really downplaying the shooting. I remember when Columbine went down, the country was in an uproar. There was a noticeable panic and concern in the eyes of everyone who discussed it. I watch the news, and its heavily covered, but there's a very nonchalant attitude about it. Like, "Its sad, but oh well, this crime probably won't get solved. LETS BLAME SOMEONE!!!111"

Now i dont want to get into any arguments but i just think right now is not the greatest time to be talking about insincerity. I know what you are talking about how we are just saying its sad and then going back to regular life, and i agree, but there are people on createblog that truly care and have friends or family that are involved, making them also involved with this whole situation.

According to an eyewitness, for the second shooting it did seem very random and chaotic.

This is one of those stories where get a play by play, headline by headline. Reminds of 9/11 on a (much?) smaller scale.

But you know, for some reason the very first time I saw the headline, I was shocked, but not as shocked as I feel I should've felt. I think all the war headlines has kind of numbed me to the word "shooting", almost as if to hear or see such a headline isn't a big deal.

Turns out, this one's bigger than a big deal.

Aw, I'm so sorry! sad.gif I hope she RIP.

I'm sure everybody hates the gunman right now, and I do too. But I kind of feel bad for him, I mean, he was a loner and his girlfriend broke up [or cheated?] on him.. I know what he did was crazy and stupid, but I felt bad for him.. He was having a tough life.. But he shouldn't be taking it out on others.

Wow, so I hate him but feel bad for him. mellow.gif

do you think that comment was necessary?

th5418, i can understand your sentiment but you don't need to be directly affected to recognize that this is a tragic event nor do you need to be directly affected to mourn for the senseless and cruel loss of life. i'm not crying my eyes out for someone i don't know but i do feel sympathy and offer my condolences to the victims and their families.

you accuse people of not caring about africa and aids and etc., but you are quick to ridicule some people for extending their sympathy to the people who have suffered.

it's an act of humane kindness to sympathize for others who are grieving. what i don't appreciate the 90128409234 new facebook groups about virginia tech and its victims by... random people. i hate people who go "i don't joe smith but i really miss you" or "you must have been a really great guy". those people make a mockery out of those who are really grieving.

I don't think that's the killers xanga - The killer was korean, and on that xanga, he joined a Chinese blogring. He [WanusMaximus?] updated his live journal on 4/17, which is today, but he committed suicide yesterday. His name is Wayne, but the killers name is Cho Seung Hi [sp?]

The xanga was really scary though. pictures of guns everywhere.

i hope you're joking..because OBVIOUSLY there has been something wrong with this kid for many many years. you dont go and kill your girlfriend and 30 something people because she cheated on you. today they even released that the guy had written several disturbing plays which were sent to the administration for being graphic and overly violent. of course, they never actually dealt with the situation. perhaps if they had this kid wouldn't have been in the position to murder all of these people.

and for the person who said that people are being "insincere" because they don't know anybody who goes there, GO TO HELL. what kind of a human are you? all because something doesn't directly affect you doesn't mean you can't sympathize with those who were. most people ARE affected by issues such as AIDS in africa because it is a major problem. the reason why many issues in our world today arent being solved is because there are people like you on this planet, so thank you.

i truly believe that many people who replied in this thread are being ignorant. atleast read a couple of articles or turn on the news and actually learn about the event before you try to discuss what happened. yes, it was worse than Columbine. you don't need to know too much about either shooting to realize that. yes, it was the greatest mass murder in the history of the U.S. there has never been a time where a single person has killed more than 30 people at a time.

I didn't read through all the posts, but this truly is a horrible thing. Last night on the news they made it seem like it was some good record that he set. They brought up the incident of the Uni. of Texas and Whitman. It's a shame, it really is. It can't really be compared to Columbine, so I don't understand why they are comparing the two.

I honestly think that after the first two murders happened that they should've let the campus know, esspecially because they didn't apprehend the person who committed those murders. Regardless of if they did or didn't think the person would kill again, the other students should've known; so they're going to take some heat for that.

Conspiracies!

I personally found this guy's story rather fantastic. I mean, you've got a kid who's known as a "loner" who even marked himself as "?" on a sign up sheet; he was the real "anonymous." He's written these amazing macabre plays where even the investigators commented as something they would have never even thought of before. The kid supposedly made two rounds of attacks on the school using guns with filed out serial numbers, left a note about the massacre back, and everything. And still, investigators aren't finding it easy on uncovering information on the him.

This guy had the persona of an enigmatic killer.

What is disturbing is the little speech Bush gave after this. He said something along the lines of

"America is praying for you", and "it's ok for people to obtain guns. It's just not ok to use them"

Obviously, a-hole, it's NOT okay for people to obtain guns - how many more shootings are there going to happen before somebody realizes having guns legally is the most pathetic idea they can come up with? And don't pray, for god's sake, try and do something that will make a difference for ONCE.

This is human lives we're talking about, not money. I know this was written in the constitution 200 years ago, but guess what - the British aren't around anymore shooting Americans out of the blue. So there is no excuse for americans to "just have a gun" handy at all times. Especially when there are such psychos around everywhere.

I stay by my opinion that money is the root of all evil. And the NRA.

FYI, people here in Canada have as many guns as Americans do. Yet we're rarely going around and shooting each other. It's just a lot harder to get them, that's all.

The first thing I do when I wake up, before I go to class, is check my e-mail, just in case there is some important announcement, or if, luck permits, a class gets canceled for that day. They also, according to the administration, sent the RAs through the residence halls to let the students know what happened. And you only set off emergency alarms when there is just that, an emergency, like a fire or something; they thought it was an isolated incident until the gunman started shooting up Norris. This isn't to defend VT's administration because I do think they could have done more to prevent the massive loss of human life -- i.e. lock down the buildings after the first shootings -- but I do see where they're coming from.

Just because gun control becomes tougher, doesn't mean it's going to stop anything at all.

It'll just become like drugs, with a dealer on the corner of the street offering to sell guns; only it'll be easier to get guns, and ANYONE with cash will be able to get them.

Anyone with cash can get them now, but ok. You're totally right. The fact that it may become difficult to enforce is TOTALLY a good reason not to tighten the laws as to who can own a gun and what kind fo gun they can own.

Yeah ok, let's make more laws. Because the laws sure did a good job stopping this kid. Yep, America should become a police state and have camera surveillance everywhere we go and have the government spy on our citizens even more than they are now.

What kind of country does that?

No, the fact that you gain little by taking away guns from the upstanding citizens. You know, the ones that would be able to pull out their own gun and stop the other person from killing 30 people.

The best part is the same thing applies to getting drunk, except drinking related deaths are higher than gun related deaths in youth.

You make a good point, while Americans are worried about people from the outside looking in, the people not foriegn to this country can do just as much damage. I mean who do you point a finger at for the deterioration of society? You want to blame Grand Theft Auto, but people from other countries play violent videogames, and you don't see this kind of stuff happening there.

The fourth amendment supposedly protects us from Unreasonable Search and Seizures, but that doesn't stop the Patriot Act from invading upon a person's privacy. The Constitution is just a piece of paper which can be manipulated and interpreted by Congress anyway they so please.

Edit //
As you said, a person can still obtain the guns illegally. So I am at a lost for words what can possibly be done.

Anyone with cash can get them now, but ok. You're totally right. The fact that it may become difficult to enforce is TOTALLY a good reason not to tighten the laws as to who can own a gun and what kind fo gun they can own.

:eyeroll:

You're still an idiot.

If what you want is the Government controlling every aspect of our lives, N. Korea can help you with that.

Yes, Because extra bullets flying around in situation of mas panic is EXACTLY what we want. Goodie.

Less than 1% of deaths from shootings are carried out in self-defence. People don't want guns for self-protection, they want them because they have a bizarre fetish which makes them feel as though they need a dangerous, disgusting thing in their homes and hands in order to be 'safe'.

f**king sickening.

Alright let's stop setting up strawmen here. I suppose we shouldn't let cops have guns then, since we don't need extra bullets.

You are basing this on... what? Your own biased, uninformed opinion? Pro tip: not everyone who wants a gun is some toothless redneck.

It's laughable that you find a gun an evil thing. Guns aren't evil. They are simply tools that can be used for evil, or for good. I'm just sorry you can't see that.

Everyone got scared when Florida passed that self defense law. Guess what, it's not some Wild West shootout like everyone said it would be.

I'm not saying we should arm everyone. That would be a disaster. But if someone is trained and licensed, they should be able to carry a concealed weapon.

I would like to point out that one of the most common (the fact that it is idiotic not withstanding) arguments IN FAVOUR of guns is 'security', and that the 2nd ammendment was originally established to promote security from British people trying to take back their colonies.

Furthermore, I would like to ask, if it is a question of over simplifying things to establish what people 'deserve', does the person who would NOT give up a little 'liberty' deserve to be shot?

Source was The Independent I bought this morning.

I don't think you have to be a toothless, red-neck hick to have a fetish for guns, but OK. And I'm basing that on my own opinion, yes. Although I reject the idea that it is biased.

I didn't say they were 'evil', I said they were dangerous. And I said they were disgusting, which is my opinion. I find them, and the ownership thereof, to be distasteful

I think people who are trained and licensed ought to be able to carry guns. I just think that process ought to be a hell of a lot more exclusive.
