blink.gif wow... well i just met this new person on myspace and we were discussing myspace layouts... and he said that someone paid $250 for a layout. The layout I have posted below. It seriously blew my mind. I've never heard of anyone even charge anymore than $10. Have you came across anyone who paid a ridiculous amount of money for a myspace page? I figured with that amount of money, they could have a full flash websites made and hosted.

$250 layout

Hmm.. That layout isnt even that good. I don't understand why people will pay so much for something like that. ermm.gif It's so silly...

Anyways, I was offered $200 to make this guy a layout. He was suppose to send me a sketch of what he wanted, and then a month went by and I was like wtc?
He decided he didn't want it. _dry.gif

I've had $50, $100, $200 offered as well. But Don't charge people that much. I think that's exploiting the person. But hey, it's a good deal.

Seeing that just really blew my mind. There is even some people like models paying $50-$60 for banners. I suppose some of them have money to just throw away like that...but for @$250 i'd be upset with myself for not delivering more than just that.

I refuse to charge people, but thats just me. I try not to do stuff (well do it completely for them) anymore because of how many of them end up driving me nuts. pinch.gif

I seriously think that taking the $250 was too much, but that is that guys own preference.

I mean wow, $250 is a lot. I've been offered but not that much, even though I turn them down. It's just that I don't have the time or I don't want to be paid since I know I'm not THAT good.

Wow..that's quite a bit. The layout isn't even that appealing. I've seen other people charge about 1/15 of that and they're much much more creative. I'm not one to work with DIV's but it looks extremely simple too, and I think I could do that myself, no bragging intended.

But she says she's a news reporter, so I guess she has the money to do so.

I've seen people posting Bulletins saying that they'll make layouts. Honestly, they're just really simple layouts. I've seen better layouts offered here for free than what some people will charge people to make. I think it's stupid. Those people who pay all that money for simple myspace layouts would kick themselves in the butt if they knew cb existed and how easy it really is to learn to make their own layouts.

What's your source saying she paid 250?

Bandspaces charges a fee of 500$ for a decent music page. I think thats too high of a price for just a webpage.

the guy who created it. he bumped into me on myspace and we started to converse via yahoo and he showed me things he have done.

i've had people by $4-$5 layouts by me with their face on them or something thats not common on layout sites... even with me being a beginner at this. most of my customers know about cb. but i agree alot of people have no idea of this site.

i dunno. when you think about the big picture... their website is a marketting tool. They market themselves with it. Meaning it needs to be good enough to market them with. Meaning if it IS good enough, they would gain sales from it. Meaning if you charged them 10 bucks for the layout, you'd feel pretty ripped off in two years when they're making BANK and you only got 10 bucks out of them while they're STILL making money off the layout you made them.

someone from eminem's Shady Records contacted me to do a myspace layout for one of their new/upcoming artists on the label, but they said they wouldnt pay me for it and all i would get is a tiny ass by-line in the corner of the page. I think they thought i was some geeky myspace kid, and didnt realize i was a professional. I turned them down. I figure Shady Records is friggin huge. They can afford to pay me SOMETHING for a damned layout. I just dont work for free anymore. A girl's gotta live, yknow?

My friend is paying me $250 just to do a COMP (mockup, if you prefer that term instead) for one of his clients. (he's agreed to give him two comps but he only has the motivation to make one.) Since he's going to be doing all the buildout/coding, I agreed to just take $250 for the comp.

Also, bigger companies/clients will WANT to pay a minimum of like $400 for a website because they'll be able to count on the quality of the work, plus they have to have a certain standard, and self-respect for themselves. If they're bigger, they're sort of expected to pay a lot for a website. Otherwise, people will just think they're cheap and cant afford one, and their customers/audience wont have much faith in their products/service.

i would actually charge more for a myspace in some cases. it limits what i can do, and it makes me work twice as much to find workarounds. Plus I have to incorporate the myspace functionality into the design, which is a pain in the ass too.

Haha, yeah dude. Totally agree, people sometimes feel disadvantage that they don't understand coding- BEFORE they even try it.

I never understood style sheets, until I sat down one day and thought "Let me try first".. and now I am able to modify the layouts to my preferences i.e. fonts, colours, profile information, moving the myspace music player around, etc.

:) Thanks to you guys! CB rules thumbsup.gif . I just wished more people knew about it throb.gif

But that $250 for that girl's profile is MAD CRAZY, someone needs to tell her she got ripped off.

_smile.gif I think its cool that most of you guys here do not charge people, or take up the offer.. plus everyone has other things to do i.e. school, college, you know life lol. You guys do all the layouts in your free time, and I am thinking as a hobbie right? So deadlines won't help bring out that creativity- I have always come across that.. when you're on a deadline.. I think inspiration is lost.. _unsure.gif correct me if I am wrong.

^Well first I wouldn't take money cause I do this for fun, and its not my job. Although I do want to become a pro. web designer once I'm older, and that I will charge for since it WILL be my job. lol laugh.gif And second, I can't charge money cause they would need my address to send it to me and I'm not allowed to give personal info. online no matter what.

And yeah, I think deadlines DO get in the way of inspiration.

Yeah, someone offered to pay me a buttload of money, but I told him I don't deal with money at all. He kept bugging me to make a Myspace layout for Block Party radio or something. After I told him that he was really irritating me (I said it in a polite way), he started saying that I was rude, soon tried to cuss me out, then I just blocked him. He threatened to shut down my site, lmfao. I hate them peoples.

I think it depends on the circumstances. I can understand a company paying $500 for a well-designed myspace layout. But I don't think personal myspaces should be charged that much. A person using a personal myspace layout for themselves shouldn't have to pay $500 for a myspace layout. I know many designers mis-price their work.

but she's in the entertainment business. She's on BET. So it makes sense to me that she would pay $250 for a design.

Its like... you can pay $15 for a pair of knockoff shoes. Or you can pay $250 for the real thing. If you're trying to be famous, you cant be paying $15 for anything, you HAVE to pay for the expensive things because then people know you can afford it.

To be honest, I think $250 is pretty reasonable when you think about how many hours are put into making such a layout ;x I was paid $150 to make a simple myspace layout & $100 to code one. I really wouldn't ask for anything less than that.

I've seen better layouts on CreateBlog.
I wouldn't have paid more than $50.00, if
even that much.

^ Originality and being unique isn't an issue if the layout actually looked good and it's difficult for anyone here, no matter how experienced a cB'er, to say that Myspace is well designed. Like people have said, there are better layouts out there, and customising for a tailor made look needn't cost that much more. Also, no one is going to know that Myspace COST that journalist $250 because it doesn't look like it was.

However, I'm neither nor when it comes to what price is right. It really is completely dependent on the layout itself. If I had the money, I'd pay way more than $250 for Trish's work because I know she'll deliver. Same goes for a lot of other designers here. You can't name a flat rate appliable to all designers because everyone has different skills and different execution of ideas and concepts and will always come out differently.

So specific to the layout this specific thread is concerned with, no way, $250 is a rip off. But other than that, I can't say how much is too much/little.
