a few questions about my layout Options

i want to use this layout and i've played around with is as much as i can to get it how i want it. but i'd like the background to just be the image i uploaded (the plaid) and i want my contact boxes to be white, but now theres just a white box behind all of that stuff. how do i get rid of that? also i'd like my top 8 friends to show up as well. any help would be great, sorry if im not too great at explaining, hopefully you get what i mean :]
