my parents were gone this week, and while they were gone, our furnace stopped working - and though our neighbor got it on again, it dropped to 38 degrees in our house. while i was at school on thursday, our water line broke and flooded the basement. not really standing water, but the carpet and pad underneath were completely saturated. three rooms in our basement have now been torn apart - floors are out, and part of the ceiling. it's pretty bad, and really made my weekend suck. has this ever happened to anyone else?

Wow, thats bizarre. Nothing like that has ever happened here not that I know of. We don't really live in a house at the moment, were waiting to move and stuff.
I hope all ends up well though, thats crazy that the temperature went down to 38 degrees too. |

yeah...and it had to have dropped below 32 while i was at school, because when it freezes, the pipes often burst.
the temperature outside that day was 30 below, so i understand that it dropped so fast :[ it seemed like kind of a freak thing to me, because i didn't even know that could happen. |

No but I remember a flood in my grandparents basement, I told them that there's water in thebasement, and they thought I lied, so they checked and it was like half a foot of water.

Well, this wasnt really to do wih pipes, but I flooded my parents' bathroom with the shower once, and all the water soaked through to the kitchen below, and destroyed the light fitting.
They were unamused. And 30 below? dear GOD i would have to move. That sounds vile. |

The only thing like that that's happened to me is our house up north got flooded pretty bad when the lake rose because of all the rain.
Our furnance has gone out many times. It's hard to sleep when you're shivering. |

That has never happened to me, considering the fact that I've never lived in a house with a basement.

It has never happened to me before because I have never lived in a house with basement and that the temperature in LA isn't that bad.

Wow. I've never experienced the whole basement flooded.
In my house, the pipes have a tendency to break in the middle of the night when we're sleeping. When my mom finds out, she yells at my dad to wake up and he just calls the plumber. ![]() Usually when the pipes do break and the water starts flooding, it breaks with a big bang. My dad is a light sleeper, so he'll definitely wake up and check on it before it flooded anywhere. |

awh, thanks for all the replies, guys =]]
yeah, i hate minnesota weather. A LOT. and i'm not really used to it yet, either. and our parents came home the night that it flooded, and the heat came back on, so i was able to sleep in my own house. but the neighbors let us chill there and they gave us dinner & stuff =] |

i'm sorry to hear that, but its good your neighbors were really nice and your parents came home eventually =] my basement was flooded, no capreting, but it was literally flooded maybe like 2 inches of water. it smelled horrible, and its happened like twice the second time not as much water though.

Holy moly. Ive never had a basement in my entire life. And now, I dont want one. xP Speaking of basements...I was watching Dirty Jobs yesterday morning and they were talking about how this lady's septic tank backed up [also another thing ive never had a problem with] and the sewage from her neighborhood shot through her toilet and crapped up her whole bathroom and basement. x_____x I guess you could be thankful that didnt happen.
