My school has been thinking about having year round school. The vacations and breaks are longer, but there is no summer. You still have the same amount of school days but year round. They want to do this so kids don't "Forget things over the summer" and when one grade is over, it's on to the next a week later.

What do you think?

Eh, i'm too used to having 3 months away from school.

It could so long as there are enuff days off...or...cut the school days in half.

The whole system is set up based on continous learning then a summer break. This system would blur the distinction between grades, and also impari class efficiency as there would be 3 weeks in between every 2 months to prevent continous subject teaching.

I could understand using this system for Elementary Schools, or even Middle Schools, but using this system for High Schools is ludicrous.

i like that better then the LONG summer thing... we DO forget stuff... and the year round thing atleast our breaks would be LONG!!! over here in canada the summer is only like 2 months and a week... but i think it should not be 1 week in between to get to the next grade maybe 3 or 2 weeks...

my school went year round the last semester i was there and it was horrible..we all thought it would be nice cos we would get the 3 weeks off then back for 6 weeks then off for another 3..but it was a total nightmare and most of us ended up going to school during those 3 weeks anyway for "summer school" so we basically had school all year round..

that's absolutely ridiculous .. year round leaves no time to recooperate and relax from studies. it would become too overwhelming for kids to handle. summer and breaks exist for a very good reason. sometimes you need that time to unwind..

i wonder where the americans got the idea of 3 month summer vacations -- i think that's a bit too long. why not have a 2 month summer vacation and maybe a month-long spring break or something?

The idea came from Olden Times, where kids had to work on their farms during the summer. The idea of the summer vacation is clearly spelled out in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, our first real Federal educational charter.

i agree with you...it would be way to overwhelming and we do need a break...not a few days longer for thanksgiving or getting snt. patricks day off...summer is special =] its our break to get back together to have our freedom and get away from school today.

minus the fact that we have and effing project to do b4 8th grade >< but thats better than walking to school in july

NO because u need a decent break to take ur mind off everything (thats the point of it) and it would also be a strain on the parents and on the teachers pinch.gif

It doesn't really matter to me. With year round schools, you get your education over with faster. And either way, my brain is still dead during school.

Ugh, I had year round school all of my elementary school years. And I always got the same track. The one track that gave you NO VACATION in the summer months. So basically the "summer" everybody looked forward to a child was non-existent for me. sad.gif

Year round school is just a way to relieve the overflow of overcrowded elementary schools, which is a big problem here down in Anaheim... But basically, if your middle/high school isn't overcrowded, it's a stupid idea that shouldn't be implemented in the schedules because it's stupid and unpopular among the student ranks.

Actually, i went to a year round school for 2 years, here in Las Vegas. And its fine. You get WAY more breaks [kick ass] and its not bad at all. I mean, over the summer most of us dont really do that much stuff. I think its fine. I am just wasting my summer time on createblog anyway... lol

well year round school might actually be better b/c you most likely wont forget the stuff you previously learned that way the school doesnt have to teach the same thing over and over again

and then since other breaks are longer due to the lack of summer break, theres more time to relax all through the year

Exactly.. I totally agree..

I forget so much during the summer..
Haha, my friend's away message one time:
QUOTE
I was looking at my away messages, and I realized that all of them have to do with "school" or "stress" or "procrastination."  None of them, however, have to do with "summer."
This message, though, is different.  I assure you that my reason for being away has nothing (or at least very little) with learning or thinking, that I could have a lobotomy performed on me and still be perfectly capable of doing whatever I am doing.  For that is the true meaning of summer: braindeath.

I personally would HATE it. Considering its summer and everything, you arent going to be paying attention or anything because its too hot to concentrate. And even with the short breaks, we're still gonna forget all the stuff we learned and the teachers will have to reteach it. wheres the logic in that?

Year round schooling would give you shorter but more frequent breaks

What if you live way up north or something where it isnt hot in summer? tongue.gif

If we forget stuff with just short breaks.. think of how much we forget with long breaks.. in many classes the first several weeks are spent just reviewing the stuff we forgot over the summer.. year round schooling would eliminate or at the very least, diminish the need for that
