I believe that in time, history will eventually repeat itself. I mean, no matter how much you try to avoid having what happened in the past occur...it is yet to happen either way. Do you think it is possible to prevent history from repeating?
Please discuss. |

Well, I guess history can never really repeat itself, although if humans are too lazy or indifferent to try to change, then I suppose many cycles can be born.
Thinking about this makes my brain hurt. @_@ Well, the cycle of poverty is something that spins on and on and on. We've had tortures, genocides, and destruction of random minorities for a long time, too. I guess I think that history does not really 'repeat' itself, as much as people allow the basically same ideals play back into the present. If that makes any sense at all. |

Well, I don't really want to base it all on my experiences, but...here's one. Say you have 2 families and the head of the 2 families aren't too fond of each other, is it possible that the child/children of these people will grow unfond of the other as well. (Maybe even go through the same events.)
I guess it also falls into the category of decisions. The things you do can affect how your life is, even if they aren't that big of decisions. Maybe that decision could be passed down to your children and your children's children...hence: history repeats. |

I believe that history can repeat itself. It's a little inevitable but depending, learning from mistakes and avoiding the bad things to do in certain situations can probably prevent history from repeating itself.

No.
If people learn the mistakes from the past, they wouldn't happen in the future. The world is always changing, in technology or medicine. You cannot say that with all this, we are still going to end up with no knowledge of medicine or cancer or telescopes. It's just not going to happen. |

History may does not repeat itself in the sense of an exact replication of events; if people are too stupid too learn from past mistakes then we deserve to have wars waged. However, time being infinite and choice being limited to the options which are not indefinite, inevitably, certain situations will arise which bear similiarity to past occurences. It simply isn't something we can escape - either Aristotle or Plato said that there were only four original ideas in the world and everything after that is simply a reinterpretation. So I guess the same is true for history; events are reinterpreted.

I think it does, in a sense. No, not exactly repetition frame by frame, but more or less the same scenario. Hopefully people learn from their mistakes, that way history tends to repeat itself less for you.

history CAN repeat itself; that's obviously happened before. i just don't think it always happens, or never happens. wow that was very strangely worded, hope it made sense.

Well, I guess that when an event happens its bound to happen again ... and the actions taken to prevent it will again happen ...
So yes history does repeat its self, and for an individual it has to do with one's state of mind although how we are raised does play a part as well... Its said to learn on our history to avoid such occurrences from happening again and at times it does work, for example slavery hasn't appeared since its end around 1863 although war seems to happen everywhere and for many different reasons ... so reviewing history has its up and downs... would write more but i'm losing my train of thought... lol |

Do you think it is possible to prevent history from repeating? Please discuss. History is a line. Logically it can never repeat itself, considering we can never go back in time. But, things may happen as they did in the past but that's only the way things work. One of my teachers always told us that 'If you don't pass history, you're forced to repeat it.' I know that's just an elementary school saying, but it's true. If you don't understand or know what happened in the past, then how are you to know to prevent such occurences from taking place? True? |

^ I'd have to agree with you on that. Sometimes, it is helpful to learn about your History. There are many sad events that occured long before we were even born and if we don't recall of them, we sure will repeat them.

It can't change people. THe only thing that can change people are themselves. There will always be consequences with everything. But, talking about technology...there's nothing wrong with it, unless you abuse its purpose. That's how I see things. THe world will never be in total agreement...ever. Maybe if you believe the Bible's account of the last days, but not everyone will believe that. |

^ But in a sense, it's almost like technology has brought more corruption into the world. A hundred years ago, evil countries couldnt get their hands on atomic bombs, and potentially wipe out another country or the world. Yeah, I think we've definately benefited from technology, but any pro also brings its cons.

Yeah, I think we've definately benefited from technology, but any pro also brings its cons. But if anyone is going to nuke anyone it will be America doing the deed. I don't think that any nukes will be touching American soil for a long long long long time. That's just my opinion though. We've got missles that are shot into the air that destroy on coming enemy missles. So, having that is a good thing. |

I dont mean America... I mean countries like North Korea, Venezuela, and Iran. They all hate us. And not just them nuking us, but other countries bordering them.

History will...repeat itself if we are oblovious to the mistakes we made to cause the problems in the first place.
You can see a prime example in the way history repeats itself simply by looking at something petty like fashion trends. They come back around...well, because we allow them to. The definition of insanity is to know whats been done wrong and yet to continue doing it... If we dont learn from our past mistakes they will come up again. |
