I am a lawyer, and infrequently I need to make appearances in court. I dread these speeches, and would like to feel more confident and prepared when I have to speak in public. Dou you have any tips for me?

I am a lawyer, And you can't afford real advice, you have to ask for it here? ![]() QUOTE and infrequently I need to make appearances in court. So as a lawyer, you rarely have to make public appearances? ![]() What Diana said. Picture Roseanne Barr naked, or Peter Griffin. That should do it. |

A lawyer? wow. didn't you practice public speaking in law school? You could read to little children in the library or when you're on trial just imagine that everybody who's there isn't there anymore.

Stop it guys! s/he may be a new lawyer. I'd like to ask moderator to remove your unethical and sarcastic messages.
I actually had the same problem, and there are a few things you can do to calm your nerves, but what really helped me was having a very discrete speech coach! The one I used was Matt Eventoff, from www.PPSAssociates.com . He gave me some very good tips, and now I am very calm before any of my public speaking appearances. I feel much more comfortable in front of a jury. Now I memorize my notes, look my audience in the eye, use my body language better, and generally feel more confident. I recommend a speech coach. It helped me! |

QUOTE I'd like to ask moderator to remove your unethical and sarcastic messages. ^dude whatever. its critcism. i wouldent want someone like that to defend me in court if shes not a strong speaker. im not going to pay someone who 1,she used the word infrequently wrong. and a layer goes to college for many years so you would think all that money would go to a quality eduacation. 2.im not going to pay someone who studders my case. and 3.why the hell would you come to a forum to ask that kind of advice? so wah if we are a tad bit harsh. |

It may sound stupid but if you practice talking or speaking in front of a mirror at home, it'll make you more aware and confident in what you'll be saying in court. That way you have a less likely chance to mess up.

Not every lawyer is a trial lawyer. True story. Some (read: most) lawyers rarely have to go to court, if ever. I may giggle, but I actually was looking for clarification (for my own ignorance, since I'm not at all knowledgeable regarding lawyer type practices, procedures, etc) Stop it guys! s/he may be a new lawyer. It helped me! Well, unfortunately people can respond the way they'd like to unless it breaks forum rules. That's the risk one takes in posting in an online forum. I'm sorry that some of the responses here have offended you, however, I do not think that deleting posts is the right thing to do either. And actually, I had a drama coach and a speech professor tell me that the picture people nude trick does work for some people. |

It's something you get good at by practicing what you are about to say. Hmmm... try practicing what you are going to say in front of a mirror. Make flash cards with bullets on them so that you don't forget what you need to say. Public Speaking can be stressful and occasionally causes you to forget important things that you needed to say. I know that flashcards help me.
