I'm taking ART I this year. We're just two months in. So yeah. Every week, we have to sketch in our sketchbook... and I'm not that good yet. I've always loved art but like, I never took it so seriously. (To me, art was either abstract or cartoon-y. Go figure.) Anyway, here are some samples from my sketchbook.


This was the first thing I drew. (My scanner sucks.) Anyway, I didn't know about lines or value.


Broken glass. (The thing that looks like a state is a broken piece of glass. That was really confusing to draw.)


Face / Mask


Egg.


Dominoes!


PS - I really should invest in blending tools.

awesome! these are looking pretty great!

as for blending tools, you don't have to invest much.
you can do wonders with Q-Tips, tissues, and your finger.

They have these blending stubs, that are basically a tightly wound up piece of paper, the kinda look like a cross between a cigarette and a pencil. You can find them at any art store for a few bucks, they are great =)

but yeah, awesome job!

I like the first & last one best.
On the broken glass one, I like where you drew the broken part of the glass.

if your just starting art i dont think you should invest in blending tools. You need to learn how to shade without blending first. Alot of people use blending to make their drawing looks smooth, like a picture. But drawings are not pictures. Learn how to shade without blending tools. You will do just fine without them

I love the picture of the rose, it's beautiful. All of them are good and nicely rendered. These drawings remind me of when I was in Beginning drawing class. It mostly focused on drawing still life.

i really like the Dominoes and broken glass
though i think you should shad other parts of the dominoes so it creats an effect of "one over the other"

you MAY want to add more contrast to some of them... which is a criticism i used to get so im just passing it on. it gives it more ... i guess "oompff"

The rose is good, everything else pretty much sucks.

Now before you say I am being a dick, I'm going to give you constructive criticism.

There is no depth. Dominoes are mutated looking, and there is no style.

Style is probably the most important thing you can do with your hands. It doesn't matter if it's a bunch of lines, as long as you have your own definitive style, it's art. Right now? Far from art.

^I kind of have to agree

You need to work on lights and darks as well as grain. Your drawings are extremely grainy.

the rose is beautiful; shading = excellent. :]

if you pull out your lights + darks and gridate more smoothly, your other pieces will look better. also, avoid strong lines, or else your art will look more cartoonish than realistic.

I love them all, they're a lot better than what I can do >.<

but did anyone else notice the broken piece of glass is a different thickness than the cup? o.O

I think the rose looks really good, I think the others need some work. But I think you did a really good job. Your in ART 1 and when I look at the stuff my school has compared to that yours looks quite a bit better. You need some more work though, the stuff is really grainy..
