For a first, it's nice, those are nice buttons in the top and you chose a very nice picture, but the whole thing is....scream-y. Like very over the top, try toning it down by using not-so-bright colors, but good for first.

Yup, the colors are very bright. Not only does it not match with the graphic, but it is also very hard on the eyes. The idea of having the same photo as the background for the text areas is nice but I think the opacity should lowered. Or at least, put a white fill layer over them and lower the opacity of that so that when you make your divs, any written can be seen without straining the eyes. Try blending the photo in the banner using a layer mask and gradient instead of erasing the edges. I'd also work on the text. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors, textures, blending modes, layer styles, etc.

Edit: Oh, and here's a tip. When deciding on a color scheme, use the eye dropper to pick colors from the graphic itself.

thanks a lot for all the great advice. how do you get the colors using the eye dropper?

i will definitely play with the layering and the opacities that you suggested tomorrow. i hope they work but if they dont, i know you'll be there to help. thumbsup.gif

THANKS AGAIN! biggrin.gif

honestly, i don't really like it, but since it's your first, i'd say you did a nice job.
it looks a little blah to me. the colors don't really appeal to me, and yeah. mellow.gif
nice try though. i'd try choosing different colors and using a different font. they don't seem to match at all.

The colors are really competing with the background image. I suggest toning the colors down.
I would put the "hold me close.." box inside the main box and not have it go over the sides. But that's my personal preference.

This is not my cup of tea, but it's quite nice.

i'd have to say its nice for your first.
i don't really like how the purple stands out.
try expirementing with some different fonts.
the text on the buttons at the top are squished together.
the image quality is horrible too.

but i must say its pretty nice for your first. thumbsup.gif

Well, i've touched up the background using everyone's advice and i have to say that the outcome is a little bit better than the original. please let me know what you think and what you think needs to be improved. my only issue is the picture in the box. i can't seem to edit it to where it blends in smoothly with the background. ANY ADVICE?

WOW.
i really like your improvement.
the only thing that bothers me is well the font.
make sure its set on sharp.
because it looks pixely.
try using a different cursive font.

thanks so much! for some reason the font is like that. i've tried fading and making it soft but no improvement. i'll probably have to start all over again on the fonts :( oh well.
