Has anyone here seen and loved "Hairspray"? It's one of my favorite musicals, and I LOVE the music!

They're making a movie version of the musical. (Strange; first a movie, then a musical based on the movie, and now a movie based on the musical...) The cast list is really impressive!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427327/

I'm not sure I can see John Travolta as being Mama, though...

Oh my, how could I even pick one song? Haha.

My favorites are "Welcome to the 60s", "The Big Dollhouse", "Timeless to Me", and "You Can't Stop the Beat".

Ew Zac Efron, that just totally killed it. Ive seen Hairspray 5 times in the City and its amazing. They have really good actors in the Musical and They should have the same amount of greatness in the movie [<3 travolta and Pfeifer[sp?]] but I hate zac efron he cant act/sing ahh he reminds me of that dood in Kyle xy they both have the keanu reeves syndrome- they all just have one expression on their face throughout the whole movie ahhh they cant act ahh sorry i just hate zac efron

The Broadway play (which was based on a movie) is currently filming in Canada. It is set to hit theatres in December 2007.

IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427327/

Credited Cast:
John Travolta
Nicole Blonsky
Amanda Bynes
Christopher Walken
Zac Efron
Elijah Kelly
Queen Latifah
Michelle Pfeifer
Brittany Snow
James Marsden
Allison Janney
Taylor Parks
Jesse Weafer

That's a pretty good cast if you ask me.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of Zac Efron, I saw a production picture of him with Amanda Bynes and I loved the costume & hair! I really want to see this in theatres & on Broadway.

Pretty good cast.
And I must say, the timing isn't too bad. I think the box office is slowly getting over the unoriginal ideas for movies... so hopefully within a year (+ some) it won't be seen as some rip off movie.
I've never seen the play... it came to the urban theatre in Madison not too long ago.

I saw it on Broadway last summer. I thought it was really good... But it was definately not as good as Rent, The Producers, or Phantom of the Opera (BROADWAY... not the movies), IMO.

Seeing as how they effed up those incredible musicals when they put them on film, I'm really not sure what's going to happen to a really good musical when they film it.

But that's just my opinion.

Who knows. John Travolta's still my hero, even if he's gotten fat and weird with all that scientology garbage.

I honestly have no desire to see this movie. The fact that John Travolta is in kinda makes me wanna puke. And that he's a girl...ya I'll pass.

Personally, I can't see it being even close to as good as the original.

I saw it yesterday.
And might I say that it was amazing.
The cast looked they're best.
(Mainly Zac and Brittany.) :]
Anywho.
Loved the music.
It had an easy plot to follow.
And carries a good message behind it.
Didnt John Pinette play Edna in the Broadway play?

Yayyyyy! I saw this the day it came out too, and it was AMAZING. Everyone in my drama class at school was talking about how they were doubting the cast, but I think they chose some great people. Even Zac Efron did an amazing job, and I never knew that Amanda Bynes had a voice!

It bothers me though how Nikki Blonsky is at the end of everything like on the cover it has everyone's name and then... "introducing Nikki Blonsky" gosh, she's not the main character or anything...

saw it today, loved it. i was thoroughly impressed with the whole cast no matter how much i don't normally like them (zac). i never knew amanda bynes could sing! haha and i absolutely adore john travolta for this role. i just didn't care for the beginning or how there were tons of butt shots. the songs were catchy though.

Hairspray (wow this is an old post brought back to life)

I thought it was lovely.
The cast is great though, Michelle got a bit on my nerves, but that shouldn't set anyone back.
Efron was the regular boy toy of the movie but they made it in a way where he was down to earth and more likeable.
Amanda Bynes was great, though i would have wished for more singing from her.

Everyone was great, expecially the lead role, even though I have forgotten her name.

One part though that I found especially cheesy was when Efron was singing about Tracy and holding her picture and kissing it.

It was just weird there.

Great though thumbsup.gif

Saw it yesterday.
The John Water's 1988 original is far superior.
However, the musical adaptation wasn't awful (though parts of it certainly were.)
As a whole, I enjoyed it, but the more I think about it, the less and less.
It's just no comparison to the original.

The person 2 posts above me said it best...I was contemplating leaving early because it was so disappointing...anyone who says this movie is good probably hasnt seen the real original version...this is the 2nd or 3rd remake....and there is just something unsettling about Travolta in that fat suit and wig...

"Great" I think is a bit much. For one, the musical production was really hit and miss. Some of the songs were relevant, appropriate, upbeat, and funny. However, a few others were heavy handed, poorly appropriated, and just lame. The sub-plots were developed almost more than the main plot which saw too much resolution and not nearly as much development. The humor wasn't as smart and biting as it could have been. And, worse of all, modern cinema has no idea how to handle race relations: That marching protest (accompanied by cheesy, yet embarrassingly serious tears from the Queen) was quite possibly the lamest, most ridiculous, and "progressive" bullshit I've ever seen. Hollywood is so determined to prove it isn't racist, it's really quite sad. Waters did a much more effective and enlightening job in caring to address the race issues within. Where Waters was patient, this musical adaptation was spastic and bored.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was alright, but saying it was "great" is going a bit far I think.

My gosh, I loved Hairspray!

I think they added some extra stuff in the movie, but I loved it all the same. I saw this movie last Saturday and I can't stop singing the songs, especially "Without Love". Hairspray songs have been stuck in my head ever since I saw the movie tongue.gif All throughout the movie I had a smile on my face. I swear by the end my cheeks were aching biggrin.gif

Never knew Zac Efron could be such a cutie, haha. This movie gave me a whole new point of view about how I felt about his performance. At first when I saw High School Musical I thought he was just okay, but he really shone in Hairspray and I think he's going to continue to be very successful and grow a lot in the film/music industry.

Nikki Blonsky did such an excellent job! Wow, and considering that this was her first time! Simply amazing. And I really love her attitude about her figure. I think more people in Hollywood should have her point of view. Here is an interview question I read about online:
"Q: What's it like to see herself on a giant screen?
There is a close-up shot of just my butt. And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to hate it, because it is my butt and I embrace myself.' It's fine. But how many other people can say their butt filled up a 70-foot screen?"

[= I just love her. So does my mom, haha. My mom LOVED the movie so much! She was crying her eyes out during the protest scene and John Travolta really gave us laughs. He's such a great actor, and he never lost his Grease moves. I admire him for playing this role in Hairspray [= Very bold of him.

Basically everyone was amazing in this movie. Best movie I've seen this year. <3

Saw it today... I thought it was fun, but admittedly I haven't seen the original.

I didn't 'get' the John Travolta thing. I just found it really unpleasant and cringingly embarrasing. I do like Amanda Bynes, though.

Saw it today... I thought it was fun, but admittedly I haven't seen the original.

I didn't 'get' the John Travolta thing. I just found it really unpleasant and cringingly embarrasing. I do like Amanda Bynes, though.

it's because in the original movie (and broadway production, i think)....Travolta's role is always played by a man in drag. aniwink.gif

Damn. Damn. Damn.

Movies like this make me very disappointed that every time I turn around, not everyone is singing the same song in key and dancing the same movies in exact sync.

Damn. sad.gif

Anyway - loved it. Like, squirming in my seat because I just love the utter cheesiness of the whole thing. Srsly. Oh, John Travolta. Hilarious and scary at the very same time! Ohhh boy was Seaweed cute. <777

I AM HOPPING ON THE I throb.gif ZAC EFRON TRAIN.

The boy's muy sexay.

The movie was pretty good. I didn't like Zac Efron for his part though...John Travolta was awesome XD
They didn't include the whole jail thing like in the musical. Love the music. The girl who played Tracy was really good.

I refuse to go see Hairspray. Its like a knockoff of grease. It will never beat Grease.

It's not like this is the first time it's coming out. The original came out in 1988. I doubt their intention was to "knockoff" Grease.

And really, they have very little in common. Unless the fact that they both are musicals and feature John Travolta constitutes it as a replica?

...They were playing the original on ABC family a few days ago I believe it was..

My dads girlfriends kids went to theaters to go see the new version and then watched the original..
I didn't bother to watch it, it really didn't seem to catch my attention through the commercials..

Yeah I saw the original too but I saw it the day before I saw the new version. Even though there are many easy to find differences I still love them both equally because they each had different parts that made them spacial in there own way I know that sound corny but that is how I truly feel.

I've seen the trailer a few times
And it looks really impressive.

It may be "the next Grease" but IMO nothing can top a classic like that _smile.gif

Haha, my friend hadn't watched High School Musical or known much about Zac Efron...after this movie, she is now obsessed.

I was quite happy with James Marsden too. biggrin.gif

I want to live in a musical.

I have decided to move to Baltimore, on the off chance that they may all burst into song at me on arrival.

Why, Linky-baby, of course!

Otherwise, Seaweed. I guess Tracy is the obvious choice, and while I do love her, Seaweed just exuded the word "awesome" when he danced.
