(Again, I searched many keywords and found nothing, so sorry if this is a duplicate topic.)

Do you believe there is a purpose to life? What is it? Do you believe you have a purpose in life, a calling? If so, what is it?

Discuss.

I don't know what my purpose in life is, let alone if I even have one.

I just hope my purpose in life is to make some important scientific discoveries..
And maybe discover aliens.. Yeah..
And be the first one to succeed in building a colony on another planet or something.

I think the purpose of life is actually just to live it.
I believe in the theory of Evolution, and Pretty much, all life, was an accident on Earth. That one chemical reaction, all an accident. So therefore there is no purpose, just life. So live it how you wish, and don't waste your time while your here seeing as you have an average of 75 years pretty much. 75 years is not a lot either.

But in this life, I hope to be able to make it into the moive industry, directing, writing, editing, and even acting is all very fun. OR I COULD BE AN UNDERWEAR MODEL

"existence precedes and rules essence"
- - - Sartre's dictum

In a way I'm a demi-existentialist when it comes to this question. There is no substantiation for an objective purpose in any life, let alone human life. There is no reason to believe that a sentient force had dictated to each and every one of us, or all of us as a whole, a meaningful direction in life. As far as I am concerned, the universe does not even suspect our existence. We are a meaningless and insignificant blip in the whole history of the cosmos. The thousands and thousands of years that men have walked the earth is just a blink of the eye.

But I find boundless beauty in this conception. The idea that our lives are our own to create. We are responsible for the direction and purpose in our lives. To make uncomfortable and scary our passage, by taking further and further control. The essence of our existence precedes us. Instead of that cold, empty, and arrogant desperation in the ideal of an objective purpose, we have freedom, pliability, humility, and wealth of fullness. There is no end to the road that we must all converge on to be successful or to bring meaning to our lives. In fact, there is no road. There is just a vast and open field. There is a field in infinite length - as infinite as human desire, will, imagination, and freedom. There is a beautiful field. f**k roads.

Everyone's living for a reason; I don't know mine yet, but I guess I'll find out someday. So just make the most of life! (=

I'll just say one thing...
Without a purpose, there is nothing to work for, and nothing live for... in other words, no ulitmate goal. We must all have a purpose. Why else would we even be alive? I don't think we were born as a coincidence. Each person has a different purpose, and discovering that will lead that person for the rest of his life.

My purpose?
To glorify God, and serve Him.

Incidentally, and not to rain on anyone's parade, but there is, in fact, a topic along these lines already:

Aw, Michael. I wanted to post here, too. ): Welll, until this is closed/merged/anything else, I'll post anyway.

I don't believe there is one purpose in life. That'd be boring. Maybe one purpose that you explore more than others, sure, but just one? I'm learning about extensialism, and it has a lot to do with this, you can't just "leave it up to fate.", I see that as lazy. No offense to anyone who believes in that, but there has to be purposes in life, purposes that only you are responsible for achieving.

Thank you, Michael. And with that, this topic is now closed.
