Legal Emancipation: An emancipation is a legal procedure that frees children from the custody and control of their parents or guardians before they reach the age of majority
Have you ever considered this? Why or why not? I'm not talking about the typical "OMG I HATE MY PARENTS" phase. This is much more serious. You can find more information here Mods feel free to move this, I wasn't sure if it should go here |

I've thought about this since I was 8. But although I know a lot more about maintaining a lifestyle than pretty much most 14 year olds would, I'm still not ready to venture out on my own, I have to learn how to maintain money and bills and accounts and things.

I never even knew something like this existed. I've thought about how I want a little freedom, but I can't support myself all alone. My parents are my support system and we get along fine. But this really caught my attention, it's hard imagining myself living on my own without my parents support, paying my own bills, basically being a mature adult at a young age. I don't think I could ever do something like this.

Like in Desperate Housewives?
I've never considered it before. My parents are pretty cool. It's just sometimes that they piss me off. And they're just really weird and crazy.. |

I have, but I know that I wouldn't be able to live on my own, and I do love my parents, so I never looked very deep in it. In my situation, it doesn't seem very realistic because I can't support myself yet, but I can see how others are able to "divorce" their parents.
Oh and Jackie, do you mean the age of maturity or majority? ![]() |

I actually seriously looked into it on my own about a year ago, since my physically and emotionally abusive parents were overbearing and such. Despite the fact that I knew my parents would NEVER agree to it, I toyed with the idea still.

I don't know if this applies to me, because I'm 22.
But anyway...I've always wanted my legal ties cut off from my fkn father since like forever! My parents divorced when I was 15, so...I haven't seen the muther-effer since! If I was 14 again, I definitely want legal ties cut from dad. I don't want him apart of any decision that involves my life. OR reep the benefits of my future success. yah...like that. |

I have never considered it due to the fact all my money came from my parents.

No not really. I love my parents but a lot of celebrites do this because their parents steal all of their money.

I don't agree with how your parents have to agree to it. If there is a reasonable no parental permission should be needed.

^Thats the downfall to things but im pretty damn sure you can take things to court with a lawyer (who would take the case for free, forgot what they call that) and win if the parent is that bad and wont let you go.

^i think when the lawyer does it for free it's called 'pro-bono' or something...i saw it on a show like csi or something.
i've never considered it, i have a pretty great home-life. but i do know a couple people that probably have thought about it. and i think it's stupid that your parents have to agree to it too. |

I very much considered this (and came quite close to doing it, had I not had theater and drama in my life to lure me away from the house when I was 16).
A pretty decent movie with a very young Drew Barrymore called, Irreconcilable Differences touches on the subject. |

I actually seriously considered doing it because my legal guardian was trying to turn me away from my mother and wasnt allowing me to see her even though in the legal papers my mom had every right to see me. But it was like, 4 months before my 18th birthday so I just waited because the whole process would have taken longer than 4 months. But I was dead serious. I think its wrong for someone to try and turn you away from your mother. I should be able to see her for the week that shes in town to see me from halfway across the country. I'm glad I didn't do it though because my cousin (my legal guardian at the time) and I are now really close because we worked it out. I'm really grateful because if I had emancipated myself we wouldn't have the great relationship we have now that we worked it all out. I say unless your parents are abusive or neglecting you, don't do it. I mean a friend of mine was born with a crack addiction which caused her to have so many health problems that she cant tell her mother about because her mother will want to know where shes getting the money to treat for example her endometrial cancer (that she found out about at 16 years old and has been getting money for from her grandmother secretly to be treated), her mother was using child support to continue her drug habit while my friend was paying the bills at 15 years old. Then you get emancipated.
