I searched to see if there was a topic on this but I didn't find much...if I'm wrong, just close this.
Anyway, Global Warming--serious problem. I didn't realize just how bad it was until I saw this public service announcement for it a few minutes ago. 2005 was the hottest year in recorded history. Every day, we release 75 million TONS of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. In 2000, it rained in Antarctica. In just one decade, there will be no glaciers in Glacier National Park. Polar bears are drowning. There is more Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere now than in the last 650,000 years. In 2004, the South Pacific received their first hurricane in recorded history. This is crazy. There must be something we can do, right? |

You should go see An Inconvenient Truth. It's a really good documentary about global warming :)
And there's this website that it shows after that you can go to to help learn about how you can help stop global warming. I forgot what it was though... :( |

Exactly. I think the main reason that it worries me so much is that not enough people care, you know? I think it would bother me less if the majority was doing all they could to help, but that's not the case.

Doing a walk to raise awareness and doing a walk to lose weight are two completely different causes. We need to find an alternate fuel source that works well and we need to stop releasing aeresols into the air.
But you're right, Shelby. We could walk, but we still need an alternate energy source to take us places that we can't walk to...like an island, or another country. |

Are you thinking of ethanol, Shelby? It comes from corn. The only problem is that it takes more energy to make ethanol than ethanol produces.

Every day, we release 75 million TONS of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. If we walk.. the cars will not give off Carbon Dioxide. People still give off CO2. We have to breathe, don't we? Maybe we should go plant more trees :) Trees eat CO2. And in my opinion, a great deal of Global Warming is due to the sun (very controversial. A lot of people disagree with me..). It's the solar maximum right now, right? |

I'm not sure about the sun, but I'll look it up. And you're right, we do need to plant more trees. And plants in general. They make oxygen and eat carbon dioxide.
Breathing is not to blame...people have been on Earth for thousands of years, but the ten hottest years in HISTORY have occurred within the last fifteen years. Aerosols and fossil fuels are more to blame than exhaling. |

Yeah I'm all about saving the world from Global Warming. I live in Texas and we;re seeing record heat. It is NOT pleasant. wanna know an interesting tidbit? One marajuana plant gives off the same amount of oxygen as an acre of trees. But its illegal. I think everyone should have to plant one NOT SMOKE IT!!!
anyway, I joined the virtual march a week ago or so. I wish the president would take this more seriously. Its a huge threat. I wish people would take it more seriously period. Its a very real problem. I went to stopglobalwarming.com and went thru the checklist and did all the things I could to limit my carbon monoxide dumping. I unplug a lot of my appliances when they arent in use. It saves money and the planet. I just wish people would open their eyes. Its not going to be too much longer before people CAN'T ignore the proof. I just hope its not too late. |

Well, IMO, if there is something we can do to stop it then it needs to become public worldwide.
And if it is so bad then we should not have to pay to go to the damn theater and see the consequences. We need more public announcements, more grusome public announcements to scare us into doing something. Bush needs to say something. I was scared at first but it's so easy to forget about it, the first start is to put it out there. The thing is, Global Warming is a natural proccess, we just happen to be here to experience it and we're probably just making it come sooner. We are JUST coming out of the Ice Age. The Ice Age will come again too, and then global warming, and then the Ice Age, and then global warming. What it does to us might just be inevitable. |

Do you actually know when the last ice age was? A REALLY LONG TIME AGO. We are not just coming out of the last Ice Age.. And at this rate, Global Warming will devistate the Earth! Last year's temperatures were record breaking! This probably the warmest the Earth's ever been for billions of years! Global Warming is mostly because of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. It's been proven that the more CO2 there is in the atmosphere, the worse Global Warming gets. Global Warming at this intensity should NOT be inevitable. The amount of CO2 has been rising since the first humans set foot on Earth. Which means, what? GLOBAL WARMING IS BECAUSE OF HUMANS. It won't be inevitable if we stop using so much gas and electricity.. |

QUOTE The amount of CO2 has been rising since the first humans set foot on Earth. Which means, what? GLOBAL WARMING IS BECAUSE OF HUMANS So when the Ice Ages happen the CO2 goes down? Did you know that they are predicting another Ice Age to come sooner? Oh yea, but I thought you said CO2 is increasing because of humans and that is what's causing the Earth to get hotter. And it SURE was increasing and making the Earth hotter when the Ice Ages came DIDN'T IT? I hope you don't think the Earth will continue to get hotter until it will burn out. Umm. Actually I am very aware it was a long time ago, and there does not have to be Ice everywhere for the earth to just come out of the Ice Age. But why are we not coming out of it? Because it happened a long time ago? And it was "over along time ago" which is why the ice that came from the Ice Age in certain places is starting to melt now which IS causing the polar bears to drown and the glaciers are just now starting to melt? "Do you actually know" where those glaciers come from? We are coming out of it sweetie, I didn't say it just happened, I said we are coming out of it and we are. The things that were left from that Age are starting to go. Not convinced... "along time ago" cannot justify that, sweetie, it's not gonna cut it Global Warming will not devestate the Earth, it has happened before in these billions of years you're talking about, it will probably devestate the humans and animals though. If anything we are just making the effects come sooner than they should. Ok thank you. |

Global Warming will not devestate the Earth, it has happened before in these billions of years you're talking about, it will probably devestate the humans and animals though. If anything we are just making the effects come sooner than they should. Ok thank you. Global Warming hasn't been this intense. Just look: The levels of CO2 compared to temperature: ![]() In at least the past FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND YEARS, the amount of CO2 has never surpassed the amount we have now. The amount of CO2/PPM has never exceeded 300, but in the last few years, it has grown to almost FOUR HUNDRED. And you know why? Because we use cars, electronics, and other energy consuming things. And DEFORESTATION. Cutting down the rain forest means that there are less trees to "eat" the CO2. And so Amount of CO2>Amount usually consumed by trees. And so more CO2 traps heat in the Earth, meaning Global Warming. And what effects come sooner because of it? DEATH? Yeah. Did you see The Day After Tomorrow? The Atlantic Current changed drastically and pretty much caused everything to happen. Do you know how it'll change? The amount of salt in the ocean will change the density of water. And you know what changes the amount of salt in the water? MELTING GLACIERS. And melting glaciers are caused by Global Warming, which I have proven above is caused by humans. And it will devistate the Earth. Do you know droughts? They're caused by low rainfall and high temperatures and a low amount of ground water. Which is basically caused by humans and global warming. Do you know what they do? No grass, plants, nothing. Which means that animals AND humans will have nothing to eat. And if you only eat meat, there'll be no food for the cows/chickens/pigs/ect. to eat, so you'll starve too. And less/no humans or none of certain species of animals will damage the Earth's ecosystem, which devistates the Earth. And you know why? Because of humanity and Global warming. *sigh* I have to remember that this is not the debate forum. We should make one for global warming though :) Sorry if I offended you in any way. I just get really defensive when someone disagrees with or questions me. I'm sorry. |

there's nothing we can do about it.
NO one works together as team to stop it. actually, no one cares. we deal with "chemical reactions" everything which include bus, cooking, driving, burning, and etc. no matter what, no one cares. we should be moving to mar ;] |

But in the last paragraph, I proved that it will devistate the Earth.. Oh well.. OK, ok, I read it and it is geared more towards humans than the EARTH, we are not the EARTH, we just live here. If we don't have food, we starve, we die, the Earth does not. It goes through certain cycles to repair itself and if we all died off then the earth will definitely be able to. Welp, that's about it, you proved but I heard how we are gonna starve, die, but that has nothing to do with the Earth's condition, the only thing that has threatened the Earth so far is it's ozone layer decaying, but the ozone is now repairing itself. Other than that, I don't know how it could eliminate earth from the galaxy or anything, it could eliminate everyone, but I'm sure Earth will still be here and just become a planet with no one on it like the others. And hey, don't put the crying face girl, there is always going to be someone's whos opinion is different than yours ya know? Everyone thinks a little differently. |

It won't be just us who dies. Many animals will die out. And that'll damage the ecosystem, which devistates the Earth. Devistation of the Earth doesn't only have to do with it's condition.. |

Elaine, everything you've said has been brilliant.
Bobby, you're right, this information DOES need to be made public. Yes, Global Warming started on it's own, but not at this rate. Since humans aided in it, we also need to help slow its effects. |

there's nothing we can do about it. NO one works together as team to stop it. actually, no one cares. we deal with "chemical reactions" everything which include bus, cooking, driving, burning, and etc. no matter what, no one cares. we should be moving to mar ;] Dude, if you really want to move to another planet so badly, why not build a bubble yourself? Hey, you know one good thing? They say the ozone hole will repair itself by 2040! You know why? We have been reducing the amount of CFCs since 1986. If we can get everyone together and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, then we can stop global warming. |

Yeah, I heard about it on myspace.. they had like a commercial for it and stuffs. Saving energy helps right? It was a really good documentary too!! Yes, saving energy helps. It reduces the amount of carbon emissions. If you want to learn more, go to http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/whatyoucando/ It has a lot of things you can do to help |

We CAN'T stop global warming--it's a natural process. It's just that we are speeding it up a LOT. So if we get together to do something, we can slow its effects so that humans will be around for years to come.

this is funny someone made a topic about this considering i made like two topics about this in the lounge but no one seemed to care for some reason. ah im over it. atleast people are responding to this one.
I recently just watched this 20|20 show and the segment was called "The last days" and it talked about the top ten ways the world will end. The nubmer one reason is global warming. But you know its not just big companies who are hurting the earth its like all of us. we all need to cut down as a group. Its really simple all we need to do is balance the carbon dioxide that we put into the air. its not rocket science. we just need to work together. I didnt watch all of the show but the other ways of the world ending is. Epidemic, Nuclear wars, An astroid that will come 2029 (then again seven years later.) |

I'm sorry. Umm I'm sorry but I disagree with you and the whole 'devastating the earth' thing. the Earth is a self healer. Its much bigger than anything we humans do to it. We may die, but the Earth isn't going anywhere. Its a constant ever changing cycle of highs and lows, when one thing goes out of balance, a change happens to correct the balance, hence the danger to us with Global Wrming. It gets too hot here, the earth will change to correct the balance, hence a dramatic climate shift that will plunge the earth into another ice age. Most of us wouldn't survive it, but millions of years down the road the earth will slowly thaw and start all over again like it never happened. We aren't hurting the earth, we're just causing an imbalance. The more we force the imbalance, the more of a change to correct it. THIS is why Global Warming is a risk. Not because of the warming itself but because of the drastic effects it will have on our lives and the lives of our children and so on. The planet it fine. It will go on. Its our asses we have to save. We have to save our asses from ourselves. We are making this a problem, and therefore it is a problem we have to fix before mother nature fixes it herself. On another note, did anyone see the vma's tonight? Al Gore did a little speech and I was really glad to see him there. I'm really rooting for him with all of the Global Warming campaigning hes been doing. I would love to see more people speaking out and making people aware instead of throwing billions of dollars away killing people in another country. |

I think it was about a week ago? I'm not sure. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/5276994.stm And we can slow down global warming if we can find alternatives to fuel and gas. They even have a prototype car that uses water. Many people know about global warming now. Before, they had a whole team of scientists that they paid to say that global warming never existed. one time at the friends house, i was looking at the seventeen magazine that had a picture of two polar bears with a speech bubble that said, "HELP, if these ice caps keep melting we'll drown!" and we both started laughing for a long time. we werent high or anything, i guess it's mean to giggle at drowning polar bears. |

I saw that Global Warming documentary thing with Al Gore a few weeks ago with my boyfriend and his family... and they're hardcore Liberals/environmental/peace/hippy kinds of people. They went out and traded their Ford Explorer in for a truck that runs on Deisel fuel. But anyway, I was pretty shocked at how the Earth has changed from 50 years ago til now. I wanted to cry when they showed pictures and compared the Earth then and now

Yeah we were talking about it in science and sadly a few people were clueless to the actual effects of Global Warming. The cars that run on water are supposedly coming out in 2010 and the only exhaust that comes out of it is water vapor.

They're gonna cost a lot though because the thing that splits hydrogen from oxygen (I think it's called hydrogen fuel cells, but I don't remember) is really expensive. |

Researcher dreams up $2.5 trillion "space sunshade"
QUOTE With all these batteries exploding vehicles running around, we aren't too surprised that researchers at the University of Arizona are getting fired up about stopping global warming, but dropping $2.5 trillion on such a project might just cool the whole idea down a bit. Nevertheless, astronomer Roger Angel thinks that launching a "constellation made of trillions of small, free-flying spacecraft parts a million miles above Earth" could form a long, cylindrical cloud to reflect "about 10 percent" of the sun's rays away from our planet. The lightweight flyers hanging around in the L-1 orbit would be crafted from "transparent film pierced with small holes," utilizing "MEMS" technology mirrors as tiny sails that hold them in line while drifting about. The idea gets even zanier when referring to shooting the "20 million ton structure" into space; it's been suggested that "20 electromagnetic launchers" running on hydroelectricity could launch a stack of flyers "every five minutes for ten years" to complete the project, and while he feels that even the massive sunshade is no substitute for "developing renewable energy," that's still a huge chunk of coin to drop on something so, um, outlandish. Here is an article i found on engadget.com about putting solar shades that protect the earth by blocking 10% of sun rays which i think is really low, if they do spend that amount of money. This article was interesting so i thought i should put it up. |

Yeah, it does suck. One of the reasons that I like The Day After Tomorrow, even though that could NEVER happen, is that it's like shock therapy. The last ten years are the hottest years in recorded history. And very few people are doing anything about it.

^ But they say that it could really happen of the global temperature continues to rise. My Earth Science teacher and Astrophysics teacher both told me theoretically, it could happen. Well, maybe not all of the event that occurred in the movie would happen..
QUOTE The initial idea that an increase in freshwater could cause a slowdown or stop of the thermohaline circulation has some probability. However, simulations generally show a gradual slowdown over a timescale of centuries rather than days and overall the temperature continues to warm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_After...is.2FcriticismsThe continually rising temperatures would cause the ice caps to melt and it would cause the salinity of the ocean to decrease. That would definitely cause a drastic change in the global climate. Maybe not enough to freeze half of the Earth, but it would cause a lot of chaos.\ And check out this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6189600.stm Carbon emissions are going up by 2.5%. In 2000, it was only 1%. The US really needs to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. |

Global warming does indeed suck...if we americans keep living life like this we may not be able to give a good life to the future ahead....Tsunamis can just spawn out of no where now. Increase in natural disasters.
