i didn't ever understand "break a leg" that isn't really a "phrase" it's an idiom, but i never understood it Because it's bad luck to say good luck, so you tell them to break their leg because that would be bad so somehow, they do good ... Yeah. I never understood the "You're the apple of my eye either", but I think it's explained in the movie/book or wherever it came from. What's old english from ? |

Yeah I always wondered why they said the alarm's going off, or the sprinklers are going off or anything. It's always annoyed me and I used to argue about it when I was little. |

Well, if you're turning the alarm on or setting the sprinklers on...then the other choice for when they ring or spray water is off, right? I don't know, actually. But it kinda makes sense.

Mmm its a religious reference. Eve went for the fruit she couldn't have, which was an apple. So the phrase refers to something you can't have but desire. Nobody ever said it was an apple. It was just described as fruit. HAHAHA. Mehh. I never understood the "Mirror, mirror" line. You mean from Snow White? What's not to get? ^I never understood that either. Also, "I'll be there with bells on!" Bells are supposed to be festive. So if you're expressing your excitement to go to a festive event, you'd say, "I'll be there with bells on!" I don't get the "all's fair in love and war" much either. |

But when they ring or spray water it's being used and so it's on and then when they stop it's off. Right ? Idunno. |

People say "A diamond is forever" because diamonds don't get scratched, mold, or anything like that. It can't break down. Everything in the world could...animals die, food molds, something harder than a certain material could be broken down it...but not diamonds.
Some quotes that are explained are very interesting...I like learning these kind of things. |

Well, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth', you know what that means, right? Well, if everybody was trying to get revenge that way, then nobody would have 'teeth' anymore because they were all taken away as revenge. I think that's just a way of making the quote sound negative. |

"when in rome.." anchorman i don't have a clue on what that means. You may understand better if you read the complete sentence version: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Simply, try to blend in with the people around you by doing as they do (or saying what they say). The saying can normally be understood with just "when in Rome". |

Well, if everybody was trying to get revenge that way, then nobody would have 'teeth' anymore because they were all taken away as revenge. I think that's just a way of making the quote sound negative. That's not entirely true. That quote comes from Mesopotamia (I think Old Babylon, but I could be wrong). It's the "eye for an eye" law. For instance - if someone beat you up, they would cut off his hand, or something like that. |

There is one im not 100% sure about.. "I think therefore I exist" Im pretty sure that it means that since we are conscious we are sure we are real. I guess its a postule for life, or something like that. It's actually a mistranslation. Descartes' phrase was originally written in French, and translated into Latin as "Cogito ergo sum." What he really intended to say, though, was simply, "I am, I exist." |

It's not so much that I don't get this quote, I've just never understand why it's so glorified.

I was thinking about this topic for some reason (coffee has yet to kick in), and I found this site:
Meanings and Origins of Phrases, Sayings and Idioms I'd be interested to know if any quotes people are confused about are actually in there. (No, I'm not advertising. This solely pertains to the topic at hand and is being referenced as a, well, reference). |

According to that site, "the apple of my eye" has nothing to do with Adam, Eve, or the Garden of Eden. So I've gotta say it.
I told you so. It's an interesting site, though. I think I'll go browse. |

Mmm its a religious reference. Eve went for the fruit she couldn't have, which was an apple. So the phrase refers to something you can't have but desire. meh? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?...apple+of+my+eye |
