I just kind of got into watching this genre, starting with Suddenly and Quicksand. Anyone a fan of it that can point me to their favorite films?

I meant for this to be more of a discussion.. not finding me a film, although that'd be nice.

QUOTE
genre of film between 1940 and 1960, originating in the United States, employing heavy shadows and patterns of darkness, in which the protagonist dies, meets defeat, or achieves meaningless victory in the end.

Noir (french for "black") is a blind genre. It's simply a backlash to the John Wayne protagonist of pre-war hollywood. Or, at least, that's the way I've always seen it. Everyone loves an anti-hero, and how much easier are they to identify with? The visual style has that doom and gloom mystery spin that makes it so much easier on the eyes. I always liked the Black and White photography anyways. The femme-fatal gets irratating after the third one you see. In a sense, noir was just as meaningless, if not more, than the Johnny-Football hollywood shine of a few years earlier (and decades since). The protagonists took an all new kind of "badass" persona. But, this felt more realistic, and hell... it was always cooler. Not my favorite, nor my most knowledgable side of film, but a note-worthy area of hollywood which inspired, and influenced generations of cinema all over the world, that I tend to like. So, kudos.

Uhmmm. My favorite stuff? The Maltese Falcon, The Lady From Shaghai, The Killing, Night of the Hunter, and Sunset Boulevard.
