So, Brandon and I were sitting in the living room last night, talking, about to get ready for bed. Before leaving the room, Brandon went over to feed the fish, a nice female betta we've had for a few months now. He was looking around the bowl and couldn't see her anywhere. That's when I came over to help him investigate. As I was looking around, trying to make sense of how our fish had suddenly just disappeared, Brandon gasped and pointed near my feet.

That damned fish had somehow gotten out of the bowl and fallen from the top of the bookshelf, all the way down to the floor. WTF?! How? Well, we flushed the poor thing and had a nice moment for her..

What happened to our fish?! Thoughts? Opinions? Where's Sylvia Brown when I need her?

Yeah, bettas commiting suicide. My science teacher back in eighth grade has some in our classroom. They'd either be belly up after ramming themselves so much into the glass, or out of the fish tank by..jumping out I guess. Yikes.

I use to have fish, or well had two bettas.
But your story makes me think of my bird oddly enough. It killed itself. It got its head stuck in the door and its head came off of its body and landed in its food bowl. But hmm your fish I don't see how it could have gotten out. My grandma puts a plant on top of her thing so nothing can get out..but I don't know maybe it wanted to learn how to jump and jumped to far.

poor fish.

OMG That is so morbid! ohmy.gif We put a plant on top of the bowl, too, so I have no idea.. I mean, when we were looking we both just thought his parents had found it dead and didn't have the heart to tell us or something. Then we saw it on the floor.. God, I'm glad we found it before one of the dogs ate it.

So, we're ruling out alien abductions and the fish learning teleportation?

i actually owned some fish once (not bettas, but those orange one's that have the mickey mouse on the side. if you dont know what i'm talking about, they might still sell them at walmart, but no, they arent goldfish). well, we came back from the lake one weekend and saw 2-3 of them laying on the floor. same thing must have happened. i think they just got excited to explore life outside the water and committed suicide instead.

yea its true

my friend had two bettas and she knew they were really um violent so she put them in separate bowls but she put them NEXT TO each other and one jumped out of its bowl and bit the eye off the other one before my friend came to separate them

TRUE STORY :D

-edit-

ok i looked it up on wikipedia for proof

"The capacity to turn aggressive behaviour on and off by using a mirror, without putting the subject at the risk of physical damage inherent in staging an actual aggressive conflict, made the fish a popular subject of study by ethologists and comparative psychologists interested in studying aggression."

and there's more on wiki about how they attack their own reflections

Yeah it's not so weird, because when fish don't have so much room, they like to jump out. They're stupid (no offense haha) so they don't know they're really jumping at air, "committing suicide." :(
