so ive been running on only the track team since freshman year. (will be a junior.) my dad made a point to me yesterday that i probably could join cross country and also run with the dog during the summer so that my legs get used to the running before track starts. (usually, theres extreme soreness the first 2 weeks.)

so, i was wondering..how much do cross country runners actually run? im sure that many people just exaggerate but im kinda curious about this.

also, does anyone know the times of just a jv runner? i dont plan on making varsity the first year i run it.

Hmm, I did cross country starting junior year and I wish I had started sooner. You really should do it, because it's also good training for indoor/outdoor track and it's also really fun, and IMO, the best season.
Uh, cross country runners here run about 1.5-3.1 miles at meets. Usually 3.1 miles for juniors and seniors.

What did you run in during track season?

I run track and cross county, hands down I like cross country more. I don’t know about any where else, but we have “Hell” week. Two weeks before the season starts, we wake up at 6 in the morning and 6 at night and run at the park. We run about 3 – 4 miles at practice. Our largest meet is our own here at the school, and its about 3.5 miles. Then the smallest one we have is a little less the 3. It kicks butt.

All I have to say is…. Do it.

PS, Asic makes the best Cross Country shoes in the world....

My friend is a XC runner and for practice she runs anywhere from 1 to even 5 miles a day.

I think her best time for the 3.1km was 17:41? She was Varsity too though so I'd say just start running everyday and don't worry about the times until your able to run miles without taking a break, assuming you don't.

I've always been un-fit but I've always wanted to join cross country to work out. I'm just too scared because I don't want to be the last person in every race. I really can't run, or even jog, I get out of breath too easily. I don't want to give up cigarettes, ugh.

generally, high school XC races are 5k, and college races are 8k. i run a 5:40 mile, which means i should be shooting for about a 19:10 5k this season. over the summer, we start out with a lot of endurance training, maybe 30min at moderate to easy pace, some cross training here and there, and by august, we'll be doing an hour or so at moderate. then during the season, we do some interval workouts, fartlek, plenty of tempo runs, etc etc.
honestly though, if it's your first season running, don't try to obsess over it, just have some fun and do your best. your first race should give you an idea of what you should aim for timewise. you can turn things up a bit the next season.
good luck.
