Do we really need a therapist?
Do you think there should be a therapist? Therapist literally controls your mind, your life... am i right? And they're kinda useless.... -0-;;; they give same advices everyday... for me, i thought it was very pointless seeing her. and whats more upsetting is, to get me a home school tutor.. i need a permission from my therapist to get one. i hate my therapist T___T:;; and you know when they give u anti-depressant pill... it like changes u.... like u get headaches and such. -0-;;;;;; me and my friends think it's torture of what therapist people are doing -0-;; i was discussing this with my sister and my other friends too... i wanted to know u createblog member's opinion about therapist... are they really helpful? |

i think therapists can be very useful. They're educated in the feilds of psychology, etc. and thus know what problems to look for in a person's life/personality that might be causing them distress, and it allows them to make useful suggestions on how to fix such problems.
It's true what they say, though, that a therapist can't help you unless you're willing and open to be helped. |

my therapist helped me understand how i'm feeling.
sure, she made me go on antidepressants for a while, but it didn't really change me that much. and a therapist doesn't only give advice. mine helped me get over my problems and actually listened to me. |

You pay a therapist, they give you their best advice. That's all they can do. That's what they went to college for. Some are good, some are bad. They can not cure you of your problems; they just help you gain a different perspective, so you can solve them on your own. Don't have high expectations for therapists because they're not miracle workers.

If you're not a willing participant, no therapist will be able to help you. The value of therapy is a function of the therapist AND the client as well.

I hate therapists. I'm totally with you on the controlling your life thing. My boyfriend used to see one and I mean, he became dependant. Me and him would get in a stupid argument about who had the heys to the car last or something, and he would have to call his therapist and talk about it or he couldnt get over it. It was really bad. Like every time the smallest thing went wrong he either called him or scheduled an appointment. It was messed up cuz his dad signed them all up for therapy, but his dad was the only one who didn't ever go. And like, as his siblings grew up they stopped going but he didnt. I had to fight him about stopping because he was so dependant. It impaired his ability to make decisions for himself. I think its really unhealthy. I think its good to see one for a very short period of time cuz I think its good to have someone to talk to, but when your therapist is number 1 on your speed dial and you can't decide weather to brush your teeth without their advice, its time to move on. I mean, my boyfriend would go in and tell the guy about the problems I was experienceing in my life. MY LIFE!! And he would come home and be like "Dr. Bowles said you should bla bla bla" and I'm like you really think I care what that kook has to say? And why are you telling him my business? I don't want him to know, I told you for YOU to know. Ugh. Me and my boyfriend couldn't get close until he stopped seeing his therapist. and then after that he learned to deal with his own problems. HE was able to cry or scream or talk about whatever was bothering him. But it took a long time. And I don't trust them because they always think you need to be on a drugs or something. And they always tell you that you need more sessions. Like, even when youre fine. Its just more money in their pocket, especially if you have a client like my boyfriend cuz his family is really wealthy and my bf was convinced he needed it. SO it was like money for nothing. I have a cousin who is an art therapist, and everytime the slightest thing goes on in my life shes like "does she need to see someone?" I'm like no bitch I'm an adult who can deal with her own problems. But I do respect that they help some people. I think family therapy is good because it gives people a chance to get things off of their chest that like controlling parents dont listen to. A therapist helps to mediate. But other than that? booo.

It doesn't sound like your boyfriend was going to a very good therapist.

I have only had negative experiences with "therapists." One I saw asked me how I felt about medications before she even heard what I had to say. Another rolled her eyes at me and said, "Oh... you're soooo dramatic." I basically told her, "Look, you're paid to listen to my sh*t, so just listen."
My sister-in-law is an intern for a psychologist that specializes in cognitive disabilities in young children. Since that is a field near and dear to me (my son has autism), I pay close attention to the clinical experiences she shares with me. So far, so good. Also - the therapists that my son has seen have been absolutely amazing with him, with one exception, and she was a speech therapist who basically tried to demand that I put my son on ADD meds. *sighs* I think overall, the intentions of most therapists are good. I just think that we live in a society where prescribing medications is the easier (and most commonly used route) way to heal. I'm just one who believes that a lot of problems can be solved organically, by talking things out. But that's just me. |

Therapists are helpful at times, but only if you know where to look for the right therapist that suits your needs and your different personalities.
I've had sort of a friend therapist at school [she doesn't have a license obviously, but she might as well] who has helped me with many things, one of which were issues at home. She actually made me feel better and cheered me up about the whole situation, so I suppose friends are therapists as well. ![]() |

i've seen...quite a few therapists. and haven't really liked any of them.
the first i saw, was also a registered nurse, so he just prescribed meds to me and sent me on my way. only making appointments for me when i was running low on pills. and he was a hippie. who got into a physical fight with three old women for his couch. and he sat in his car for 16 hours to see Phish. the second i saw, was completely insane. she had more "episodes" than i did during our sessions. she would freak out on me for sitting in certain chairs or looking out the window. and she had hermit crabs as pets. she thought they were super exciting. the third i saw was a specialist in drug addiction and recovery. he was...awful. completely horrible. just...a mean man. he embarassed me, put me down, and helped me resolve absolutely nothing. if anything, he made me want to crawl further into my hole. so, i've not seen one decent "therapist", "counselor", or "shrink". but i believe they are out there. and that i will find the perfect one for me someday. because i need that time every week to vent and get input from someone who isn't directly involved in my everyday activities. |

Therapists can't "cure" your problems, don't expect them to. What they can do is listen and give a professional opinion on what you should do.

maybe it's just my therapist that pissed me off... i guess there are some bad therapist out there.
my therapist.... she told everything about my life to my school nurse. i was so upset that she did that.... so thats why i made this topic cause i was upset and wanted to know are they really useful to the future? >.<; and the other things, i hated is that. she wasnt really listening to what i was saying. all she thought was like that i didnt want to go to school cause i hated there which is not true. i just had family problems in the past that i couldnt get over with and shes just keep telling me that im dramatic person and that i dont like school. for me, i thought i wasted 6 months seeing her... good thing i didnt pay her cause we did health insurance. i regret seeing her... my friends told me that i should sue my therapist for sharing all my personal problem to other people such as my school principal, school counselor, and my school nurse. dont you think i should sue for doing that? -_- i just hope SOMEDAY i ran into a good therapist who cAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND AND ME HEAR ME GOOD freakingA!!!! |

Then again, if he/she wasn't obliged to do it as a compulsory action, then I'd seek new help. |

Personally, I've had it up to here with therapist. Today I must have had this 10 minute rant on how bloody useless they are, with my mother. You see. My first therapist, I found helpful. I didn't open up much to her, but in time she got a little out of me, and we were starting to get somewhere. Until she stopped working for the inpatient adolescents unit. Ever since I've been passed on to another therapist and walked out on them, in refusal to talk about anything. I must have had atleast 4 therapists in the last 2 years and by now, I know what their all about and I know their techniques. Their way of helping is shite, and I don't need to hear "rate your mood from 1-10" every time I enter the room. It really fucks me off. Their useless.
EDIT: Also, I hate how they speak to you in that overly friendly tone. It's quite annoying. |

my therapist.... she told everything about my life to my school nurse. i was so upset that she did that.... so thats why i made this topic cause i was upset and wanted to know are they really useful to the future? >.<; That's illegal. Psychologists are legally required to keep confidentiality between them and the client. The only time they're allowed to tell is if you say you are going to hurt someone or yourself. |

i think therapists can be helpful when they aid people with problems, but if she's controlling your whole life, then just don't see her!
but then again, i've never seen a therapist....(don't need one) |
