http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/04/28/boycott/index.html

I'm just wondering, did anyone on cB hear about this? Cause i just heard of this like yesterday. And im just curious of what you guys think of it, and if you support the protesters or the government kinda people..

America would be like nothing without immigrants, and i think this is wrong. As for me, i'm not going to school on Monday happy.gif My teachers are also not going to school either. Oh and im not sure if this topic should belong here or not. So if it doesn't belong, feel free to move (:

I support the protesters. Not all non-citizens in the US are illegal immigrants. I'd gladly do it if I were still in the US. You're right. The US would not be anywhere without its large population of immigrants (and other countries).

i think i read something like that on BBC.

that would be scary. my parents are immigrants from china. but my mom now has an American passport.

my dad doesn't have a greencard. or American citizenship. but that's cause he works at the United Nations and doesn't require one cause they have this visa thingy. hmmm. i wonder what the people who work at the UN would do.

i wish all NYC public schools would be closed on Monday. that would mean no graphing/shading/crosshatching quiz for math!

sorry, got a lil but off topic there. biggrin.gif

edit:

i agree with the protesters. cause my dad and other people who work at the UN aren't citizens. i mean, what would happen if that causes some trouble with some other country?

Meatpacking plants will shut down. Markets won't open. Trucks won't roll. Students will walk out of school. Millions of people will take to America's streets in possibly unprecedented numbers.

... And who said all immigrants worked in meatpacking plants, markets or drove trucks or buses? There are immigrants that own businesses and direct movies and don't work minimum wage jobs. I'm tired of the uneducated illegal immigrant stereotype.

^me too.

My friend's dad is NOT a U.S. citizen. However, he has a very high class job - he is the owner of a traffic signal company, a very successful one, actually.

It pisses me off that people think, "Oh. He isn't a U.S. citizen. What a stupid ass." Gr..

I agree, the US would be nothing without immigrants. My grandmother came over here in the 1950's after escaping from East Germany at the end of the war.

But, I have a problem with all of the illegal immigrants, which are mostly Mexicans. (I'm not racist, btw.) Here in Florida, they mostly work in the fields picking fruit and produce. Some of them work for landscape companies and construction companies. Around here, where I live, almost all of the illegal immigrants dont speak english, and live in run down houses or trailers, because they send all of their money back home (but they get food stamps and assistance). And, they send their children to our public schools... most of them cant even speak english. I have no probelms with the ones that are here legally, but I dont think the ones that broke the law and entered the U.S. illegally should be rewarded with citizenship.

I really dont understand why people arent going to work/school on Monday. And I dont see why all of a sudden, other races are coming out and doing this now that hispanics are.

I'm confused about this whole thing. I heard that it mainly targeted Hispanics, but now, I think more people are getting involved in it because if its mainly targeting hispanics now, It could target any other race later on in the future. And as for people not going to work and school, i think its part of the protest and to show the government how little America is left with when Immigrants are taken out of the picture.

mm well according to my teacher, the bill does not say ANYTHING about no immigration. it says that ILLEGAL immigration is not allowed. some people wait in line for years just to become a legal citizen. and i don't think it's fair to them when people just come here illegally. i know there may be some exceptions, for example this guy that use to go to my school risked his life coming here because there was a civil war in his country. but i think that many others should wait in line to make it fair for everyone else.

p.s the group who protested to L.A city hall had NO idea what they were doing cuhz city hall has NO CONTROL over whether the bill gets passed or not. i'm not saying that protesting is wrong. i mean you should stand up for what you believe in. but at least protest to the right people wacko.gif and to make it clear, i don't have anything against immigrants either. just saying that illegal immigrants are making it unfair for the people who try to come here legally. that's all happy.gif

^ haha all of the above information came from my teacher so please don't kill me over it XD

I think in a way it's a good thing to do. But then again, their salary. They really need this money. I'm latino. My parents are from Ecuador and El Salvador.

If you think this is interesting..there was this film that premiered at the SunDance Festival called "A Day Without A Mexican". I forgot what the director/writers name was..but I'm sure you can find it on google.

Anyhow, the movie has to do with how the U.S.'s economy would be completely different. It showed local jobs without latino's such as a restaurant, there were no waiters.

It showed a carwash without anyone to was your cars. School's didn't have janitors. I mean it fits very well into the stereotype...but Full blooded American's make it that way. They won't allow the hispanic race to get good jobs and things in that nature.

I live in a very very very diverse community where a good quarter or more is not a citzen or is illegal, and there have been at least a couple of walk-outs at my school. I completely support all immigrants, considering I wouldn't be here without such immigration laws.

However, I won't be participating in the walk-out. Too many people (including myself) don't know what exactly we'll be fighting against. I know that they (Congress, Senate) want to change the immigration laws, but change them to what, exactly?

I agree. My family waited 3 years to get to the US and my dad paid 5000 pesos for each of us (there was 5 of us) and 3000 to get green cards and 2000 to get permission. -_-

Though it is true that the US is nothing without the immigrants...man I don't know what to think anymore.

We need the immigrants here. Really, the US is based on immigration, and it's supposed to welcome all people. The immigrants are a HUGE part of the workforce too, so we really need them.

Heather, more than half of the country would be gone if we didn't have immigrants. The Native Americans who came to the US thousands of years ago are thought to be from present-day Asia. Your ancestors, who I assume are of European descent, came here and even you wouldn't be here if it weren't for them.

So I suggest that you rethink that statement.

And personally, I think if it was a battle for survival between Hispanics and us White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, they'd win. Seeing as how these illegal immigrants do all the dirty work we won't do. _dry.gif

The whole thing is just really stupid. Nobody knows why they are protesting or what the bill even says. I read the bill, not just the summary of the bill but the actual bill. It's not called HR 4437 - Anti-Immigration Bill. Its called HR 4437 Anti-Terrorism & Illegal Smuggling Bill. It was never to hinder or stop immigration to America. It was to stop terrorism and smuggling narcotics and contraband. They're also cracking down on illegal immigrants that have criminal records. Thats why most hispanics that actually saw the bill are mad. But they are mad for the wrong reason.

Haha what a faggot.
Most of them can't get educated BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO OLD TO BE IN SCHOOL. dumbf**k. Lets see you trying to go to school at 34. While having a family to take care of, and money to be made to keep food on the table for you family. Plus, most of them couldn't get educated because they were in Mexico dumbass. Lets see, Mexico back then didn't exactly have Harvard style education to give out at schools. Today, it's not like it's improved a whole lot either. f**king idiot. And survival of the fittest, and only the fittest should survive? If that was true, you would have died YEARS AGO. Cause your punk-ass would have gotten run over by a f**king parked car or something. Yes. But also, with all this hype, a lot of kids people have been generalizing all immigrants, not just illegals.

That pisses me off.

honestly, i think its b*llshit. i resent illegal immigrants, partly because my dad had to work his ass off to come here legally. my mom and dad were separated for 1.5 years because my mom had to wait for her greencard after she was married. what makes all the illegals think they can hop the border and then petition for legality? its b*llshit! there are tons of people who have been waiting for years ahead of you, payed so much more than you, and still been rejected? help the economy? sure, i guess. but do they not think that we would have found other people assume those jobs without them? good f.cking lord. i'm so pissed off about that. i'm also pissed off at the government for providing illegal immigrants w. so many facilities. you know they don't ask for you ss or alien # to be enrolled in school? i agree, that certain circumstances compell a person to come here illegally, but do you think you're the only one? all the immigrants that were here legally were in much the same position as you, worked their f.cking asses off the pay the immigration fees, lived in those conditions till they were accepted, immigrated to a new country w. no connections, and worked their f.cking asses to make it in this county. example? my dad. what makes you so f.cking special. *glare* the immigration laws, imo, need to be stricter. if you think about it, most caucasian and asians don't even have a problem even though they're immigrants. know why? because US accepts most of them as student visa's first. why? because they only accept the smart ones and let them work ONLY AFTER they've completed their education or have choosen to pursue higher education. moral of the story? don't hike your ass here without having means to provide for yourself legally.

honestly, i think its b*llshit. i resent illegal immigrants, partly because my dad had to work his ass off to come here legally. my mom and dad were separated for 1.5 years because my mom had to wait for her greencard after she was married. what makes all the illegals think they can hop the border and then petition for legality? its b*llshit! there are tons of people who have been waiting for years ahead of you, payed so much more than you, and still been rejected? help the economy? sure, i guess. but do they not think that we would have found other people assume those jobs without them? good f.cking lord. i'm so pissed off about that. i'm also pissed off at the government for providing illegal immigrants w. so many facilities. you know they don't ask for you ss or alien # to be enrolled in school? i agree, that certain circumstances compell a person to come here illegally, but do you think you're the only one? all the immigrants that were here legally were in much the same position as you, worked their f.cking asses off the pay the immigration fees, lived in those conditions till they were accepted, immigrated to a new country w. no connections, and worked their f.cking asses to make it in this county. example? my dad. what makes you so f.cking special.

That's a lot of reading....

Yes. But also, with all this hype, a lot of kids people have been generalizing all immigrants, not just illegals.

That pisses me off.

People are only generalizing all immigrants because they are protesting. There was no hype about the legal immigrants until they made a big deal about the bill.

Uh, hello? I am an immigrant, and you don't see me protesting. In fact, I agreed with agiri's opinion about the whole thing. All immigrants protesting, huh? I hope you see what I mean now about the hype and "people" generalizing legals with illegals.

honestly, i feel that a lot of the people that did protest weren't even 100% sure what exactly it was they were protesting for. if you guys watched the news, the achors were taking the opinions of random people, and a lot of them were totally independent of each other. some even conflicted.

that being said, does it even make sense for them to all be protesting together?

most of the 'hype' isn't about immigrants. no one's arguing that america doesn't need immigrants. hell, most of this countries population is here because of immigration. whether it was last generation, or ten before.

its the illegal immigrant issue that's causing most of the controversy.

the other part comes from squawking idiots that don't even know what they're talking about thereby causing confusion. thanks dumbasses.

*rolls eyes*

Sorry about that. I wasn't clear on what I was trying to say. I wasn't attacking immigrants. Just mentioning why there was a big generalization legals with illegals. I apologize.

What I meant to say was the public is generalizing all immigrants because you have these huge protests across the nation makin a big deal about the bill. The spotlight was originally on illegal immigration. But then with people protesting, the public started throwing all immigrants in the same boat. Legal and illegal.

Again, Im sorry Spirited Away. blush.gif
