NASA is planning on crashing a space probe into the moon in 2009. The explosion will be visible on Earth through a telescope and it will create a crater roughly the size of a third of a football field.

What do you think?

I think they'll need to go to the un-employment office soon.

Yeah... Leave it to the Bush administration to go "Hey.... we should do something about the moon... I know! Let's blow it up."

I'm not a physics major. I don't know what kind of effects this would have, but maybe someone can tell us.

QUOTE
The lunar spacecraft will target the south pole, releasing its SUV-sized impactor probe in January 2009 on a suicide plunge at about 5,600 miles per hour toward a frozen crater believed to contain hidden ice.

If ice is found, it could be melted and the water used to help make rocket fuel or oxygen.

It makes us sound like a plague.

I think there are more important things that should be taken care of rather than a plan to blow up the moon.

If they blow up the moon, their funding is going bye-bye. I don't think it's a good idea. Something's going to happen, and then we won't have a moon anymore.

NASA scientists say the collision should excavate a hole about a third the size of a football field and hurl a plume of debris into space.

QUOTE
The entire mission will cost more than $600 million, with the impactor project cost-capped at $80 million.

QUOTE

.. Isn't there enough water on earth? Why waste billions of dollars to crash a space probe on the moon, launching debris that could be harmful...? Is this NASA's way of taking a break?

Bob: "Hey... remember when were were kids?"
Joe: "Um, sure."
Bob: "Well, I thought it would be cool to blow up the moon."
Joe: "Wouldn't that change the gravitational force to the ocean and launch harmful debris into the vacuum of space and cost billions of dollars?"
Bob: "That's true.."
Joe: "LET'S DO IT!"

^ The reason they gave was to support future human outposts on the moon. But I agree that NASA seems to have lost their minds. What's the point in studying something if you're gonna blow chunks of it off?... Especially if you don't know if the ice is there in the first place.
