oh sorry,
its a pun of 'all your bases are belong to us'. back when the internet was relatively young, a group of hackers went around defacing websites with that slogan, which was originally from a japanese game that was poorly translated.

i guess its too old for most people here to understand. ill go change the title. =)

so what do you guys think about the layout code sniffer? i was a bit hesitant when i released it, since i didnt know how ethical it would be. but then since its all there for everyone to see, i figured why not make it easier for people?

so. some feedback would be nice. =p

So, let me get this right. With this code people are able to steal other people's layout codes?

It would be nice if there was something to indicate where it came from, I know some people work hard coding their layouts.

I guess it'll make it easier for jockers :/

i guess it would.

at the time i came up with the idea, i was with ed and ben, and ed advised that i shouldnt release it, or at least hold it off. but then i thought over it, and it would be a matter of time until someone else would release something like this... it really would.

the reason why i opened it up for everyone is, in the past, i released a lot of CreateBlog originals ™, and by that, i mean something that wasnt even out there in the internet - the Xanga tracker being one of them (yup, thats right folks, cb was THE FIRST site to have it) - but missed out on the potential growth because i restricted it to official members. figured i didnt want to do the same thing this time around.

but then i dont know now, im having second thoughts. i feel like im releasing something to ensure createblog's growth at the expense of its core members - the designing community. i see how this can become a really big problem in the future...

The encoder and decoder are awesome, thanks! About the sniffer, it's pretty spiffy but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Going to view source is a common thing to do and it's like a teaching tool. I think adding the copyright stuff to it should be fine.

I agree. It gives people another incentive to become an official member. But, it also prevents guests from using it to steal other people's layouts. Not that all guests will do that or that no official members will do it either, but still.

Eh, agree with Paradox of Life, it does make me feel violated.

^Well official member, designers, promoters have access to the current cb tools available for Xanga & I totally agree. Because, in my opinion the tools we have now I barely use. And now I used the tools which were given, I use because they are very useful for me. I really can't explain it, but if your already official to CB, you'll understand or otherwise.

i REALLY dont like that sniffer thing

it wouldnt be too bad, except for the fact that someone can steal images straight off you myspace or xanga...

and it would make jocking really easy for lazy bums

and i absolutly HATE DEcoders... they defeat the purpose of an encoder.

not saying that ppl cant go somewhere else to get a decoder, but again... i encode some of my pages, to prevent shtuff from being stolen, and if someone wants to steal it, they will go to a decoder

some of the people that come to createblog take the codes for layouts and leave, and i'm pretty sure some of these people won't have the respect to not use this to steal other people's layouts. (i hope that made sense).

so these random people can now just take layout codes from other people's xangas through createblog? it's okay for cb to provide the layout codes, but i dont think it's good for them to provide a tool that can easily take someone else's layouts.

also, most people who design have trackers on their sites to look for stealers. whoever steals a layout code using this tool wouldnt be caught.

go jocking. dance.gif

That's probably the funniest thing ever.

You're probably gonna have more people whining about how someone stole their layout, or you're going to see the same layout like 234234 times.

It's still funny.

Maybe I should steal from someone... I mean, it is easier now.

Yeah, I am really happy about the encoder and decoder, I've missed those. But I don't like the layout sniffer at all. Yeah, I get it, it's kind of a learning thing, but a lot of people actually learn codes themselves and work really hard on their layouts. And for someone to just put it in the layout sniffer thing and get the entire code in seconds just seems a little wrong to me pinch.gif

I honestly don't mind the layout sniffer.. Most layouts that are out there aren't "original" anyway, I mean, the code comes from somewhere so it's not YOUR code or MY code, you know? Sure, making the layout takes work, and sure, it'd be nice if the user left a credit, but it still doesn't bother me at all.

And the encoder/decoder is really cool. :D

perhaps instead of a sniffer, adding something that disables the view sources on pages so people arent getting their layouts jocked.

^Wouldn't that motivate some people to jock even more? If you want something but it's difficult to do so, you might go to greather lengths to get it. Usually, telling people not to do something will make them want to do it even more.

yea, and making it even easier to do lets them do it even more easily, which means that they will do it. the pride people take in jocking doesnt come from how hard it is to jock, but in what you actually are jocking. and anyway, if it's too hard, most people will just say, "ugh, it's not worth the effort" and go on to some other xanga.

not necessarily. people might become tired and find it tedious to get around it. like the sniffer, it could cause more jocking, but then again, it could help in the aide of stopping it.

im sorry guys, the sniffers here to stay. as Mona and others mentioned earlier, the sniffer is really intended for informational / educational purposes. i know it may inadvertantly encouraging 'jocking', but thats something people really have to live with, as any determined person can 'jock'.

also, ive always believed people learn best by imitation - it really is a natural way of learning. kids grow up imitating adults around them - likewise, people learn to code and design largely by imitation. only when the basic foundation is there can someone actually begin to experiment on their own.

when i first began designing and coding, i myself learned largely by imitation. so i dont expect any better for anyone else. i hope that this tool - even if its initially used to jock - will in the long run help people learn how to code.

besides, what more feeling of accomplishment can you get than knowing you did something all by yourself. people can lie to others, but they cant lie to themselves.

to close, ive updated the sniffer to include a cb disclaimer discouraging jocking. thanks for all your feedback. please keep them coming. my next tool will by a myspace previewer.

Dear Master,

Decoder should be for offical members and encoder will be for everyone.

You can make us "feel" special that we can defeat the purpose of encoder with your decoder, awesomemicron :DD

I'm sure everyone does have an extra copy of their html so they shouldnt complain about not having a decoder.

There would be decrease the chance for your cB special members to get jocked :]

PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !

help us a bit :DDDDDDDDDD
---

how many designers agree w/ me ?

^ I like your idea.

Most people save their codes up anyway so there isn't a point for a decoder for the original creators.

I agree. It gives people another incentive to become an official member. But, it also prevents guests from using it to steal other people's layouts. Not that all guests will do that or that no official members will do it either, but still.

Eh, agree with Paradox of Life, it does make me feel violated.

Right. I see. NVMD to the last post i made. hehe.gif
