When did CB get so uptight about grammatical details?

Now, don't get me wrong. I realize that correct grammar and coherent sentences are important. Sure, sometimes I can't help but subtly pointing out a grammatical mistake. But is it really necessary to bash someone for a run-on sentence or misplaced apostrophe? Do people really deserve less respect because of the way they type? It seems as if some people are desperate for superiority...

I'm surprised at how many evangelical grammatists have developed on this forum. Thoughts? Opinions? Partagez avec nous, s'il-vous-plait.

Wow, I didn't think we were that uptight about grammer. I guess you could put me in the category of a grammer/spelling nazi, considering it is my biggest pet peeve when people cannot spell. It bothers me, but I won't go and bash the person for it. You kind of have to accept it in today's society.

It's also quite hard to think of someone as intelligent when they cannot spell or use correct grammer.

But that's just me and my pet peeve.

I just don't like when people don't spell things correctly. Not horrendously angry, but mad all the same.

Bad grammar doesn't really irk me too much, especially on online forums or IM. I only have a problem with misspelling - done on purpose.

I think it's rude to insult people about their grammar especially if the person doesn't know any better. Sometimes you can tell that English isn't the person's first language yet people continue to bash the person. I can't think of any specific cases (probably because those people have been scared off) but I remember it happening.

I love English but I can accept that not everyone is good with it, other people should to.

Well, there's extreme cases (trust me, they were extreme - I had no idea what the person was saying) where the person could spell, but the sentence structure...huh.gif and it's just like, "Please don't speak if you can't...".

It's blatant misspellings that really get me...

It's okay sometimes, I guess. But when those people just do it on purpose daily, it gets annoying. I don't think we should kill them for it, but they should type so we can understand it.

I see it as we improved. There are less grammar nazis now than there was back then in the old school of cB.

Mmmm. I've actually gotten a lot better about not correcting people. Sometimes I can't help it though; some mistakes are just far too irksome to let go.

Since we're on the topic, that should be "too," not "to." But never fear, I insult you not. I'm quite sure it was just a typo. _smile.gif

(In fact, since reading this topic, I've found 5 cringe-worthy grammatical errors in topic titles, but was kind enough not to point them out. Just for you.)

I'd say it's a pet peeve of mine too, but I don't call people out on it.

And I have to say I haven't seen too many of these nazis on cB myself..luckily we don't have many members who spell things atrociously on purpose, like, "lol i think ur funny 2" or something like that. If I saw that, I'd probably respond to it.

It's just like, why do people want to bash the written English language? I don't get mad if I can at least understand the person, but I just don't see what the big deal is about typing "you" instead of just "u."

Grammar Nazis have two motives.

1] To assert their "superiority" to help make the world a better place (pfft.)
2] To keep themselves from taking out a gun and shooting the computer.
yeah.

Silly, eh?

I definitely agree with you on that one. Oooh, I love run on sentences. :P

I tend to point on grammatical errors, but I don't make it seem like I'm superior. Usually it only happens once in a while, mainly on AIM anyways, since some of my friends tend to misspell something constantly. Oooh and what does bother me is when people use the word "conversate" when it's converse when they're trying to sound smart. Bleh. sweating.gif

I don't know when cB turned this way and I have to admit that I've been quite inactive, so there isn't any partisan on my views since I don't have much of a right to say something on this issue, at least not yet. :P

Plus, we all make mistakes. I guess it only gets bothersome if someone uses stickcaps along with mass amounts of slang where it might become incoherent to quite a few of people. But that's not what this case is about, so yea...

I remember that there have been some extreme cases of "grammar nazis" and people who completely disregard grammatical rules. I think that grammar isn't too big of a deal unless people spell things wrong on purpose or type in such a way that no one can understand.

"Grammar Nazi" was a BR thing. d:

But yeah. I'm extremely anal about grammar and spelling (Even though I'm not a great speller, I make an effort and check when I'm not lazy). I've been that way for quite some time. When someone types in sticky caps, or otherwise idiot language, I want to rip out their entrails and hang that person with them.

nice theory, but not really true. Some of us are genuinely bothered by particularly horrific mistakes. Not spelling so much as useage errors. It's not a matter of being mean about it either, but for people who are at all observant, things that are horrifically wrong can be extremely irritating.

This is true.

And it's not like were always trying to be rude.. ever thought that sometimes we might genuinely want to help people? At least, that's how I see it. Some people simply don't know the difference between "their", "there", and "they're". I don't see anything wrong with correcting them.

Or maybe we could just smack them upside the head for not paying attention in English class. :p

You'd be surprised.
A few of my friends that just got internet just a few days ago, whenever they found a letter that they can replace with a number, they'll do it.

^ I wouldn't be the least bit surprised, especially considering the amount of votes "PpLz wH0 tYp lyK diZz" got in the what irritates you the most? thread.

As far as grammar goes, I'm pretty cool about disruptions but what really kills me sometimes are those who purposefully show their lack of regard for typing at least somewhat coherently. stubborn.gif

Yeah it really shouldn't matter if you are talking online. When you are talking with your friends dont you use slang? It's kind of the same thing only its written out. It's not like anyone's trying to impress others with their grammar (well some may) and some ppl should chill a little. Especially in the arguments. It seems like if someone is losing they will bring up grammar issues as a cheap shot.
