ATTN: Catholics Subject: Ash Wednesday, what are you giving up for Lent? Options

Tommorow's Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Lent. One full meal only tommorow, as well as no meat.

I think I'm going to give up computer games and TV. I feel kinda bad because I probably could do better by giving up videogames, but I doubt I'd be able to avoid playing videogames.

Giving up meat is also going to be tough as well.

Anyone have good suggestions, or is anyone stuck and needs help on what to give up?

Ash Wednesday reminds us all that we are mortal, we will all die. Also, the spreading of ashes was an ancient sign of penitence.

Answer: Ash Wednesday is the day Lent begins. It occurs forty days before Good Friday. The “official” name of Ash Wednesday is “the Day of Ashes.” The reason the day became known as Ash Wednesday is that it is forty days before Good Friday, which will always be a Wednesday. I'm not as religious as I used to be. I don't want to do anything for a god I don't exactly believe in (I suddenly became agnostic). I told my dad that, he wouldn't accept it but he went less stricter.

and as for the church question (I know it wasn't to me) but not a lot of kids like going to church. They don't like listening to "meaningless preaching" (though my priest is quite wise, I listen to the homily)

Actually, Buddhist beliefs aren't strictly religious, and can be applied to a lot of faiths.

Any bad habits? Maybe things that lead you to temptation? Maybe you can promise to pray more often, or volunteer more time helping others?

Also, a question for Catholics that don't plan on going to Church/adhering to fast and abstinence. Why not? Think about what Lent is. It's preparation for Easter. Jesus died on a cross for our sins. All that is being asked of us is to give up some food and things we enjoy.

The problem with you refering to all atheism as dogmatic seems obvious. That is far too narrow a definition, as well as a bit stereotypical.

I don't believe all theism is dogmatic even.

Also, atheism does allow the possibility of God; Agnosticism really has very little to say about such a possibility. Agnosticism is more concerned with the possibility of knowledge, not of existence (Unless of course you mean the existence of knowledge?).

But so I'm an idiot. I ate breakfast this morning, got to second period and realized that it was Ash Wednesday and I wasn't supposed to have. Oops I did give away my lunch, though.

So, has anyone else heard of this rule where you can't eat meat still of course, but you can eat one real meal and two small ones? That's what my friend claimed when I mockinly chastised her for eating, and I'd heard it from my grandmother, but I always thought it was for the very young and the very old who had to eat. The other Catholic guy at my table hadn't heard of it either.

on ash wednesday and good friday you eat less than you usually do. (you only have to do this if you're 16or 18 and up-i don't remeber which one it is-.. but if you want to then you can)

i gave up my chicken sandwiches during lunch..

that's 1.50*5 days a week..

7.50 a week on chicken sandwhiches

or during all of lent..

1.50 * 40 = $60 (if we had school every day)

that's alot of money saved anyways.

I'm almost positive it's no meat (abstinence) for everyone 14 and older, one large meal and two small snacks. I think the age ranges from 18-60ish. All of this is health permitting, and I think you can ask a priest for dispensations if you need it.

What are fast and abstinence?

Under current canon law in the Western rite of the Church, a day of fast is one on which Catholics who are eighteen to sixty years old are required to keep a limited fast. In this country you may eat a single, normal meal and have two snacks so long as these snacks do not add up to a second meal. Children are not required to fast, but their parents must ensure they are properly educated in the spiritual practice of fasting. A day of abstinence is a day on which Catholics fourteen years and older are required to abstain from eating meat. (Though under the current discipline of the Western rite of the Church, fish, eggs, milk products, and foods made using animal fat are permitted, they are not in the Eastern rites.) Their pastor can easily dispense those with medical conditions from the requirements of fast and/or abstinence.
