don't you have a scientific calculator? they all have the fraction to decimal and decimal to fraction function don't they...?

ugh i can't find an interactive calculator that can do that fraction <-> decimal crap and it's not really giving you an answer...but this should hep you (i think you should keep repeating the 45 when converting or whatever, i'm not sure because i'm too lazy to go get my own calculator)

19/55 (TI-83+, .3454545454545454545 math, frac, enter) took a total of about 5 seconds.

Maybe the original poster didn't know how to use those functions?

You can do it by hand, too.

First look at the repeating digits; there are two of them. Then you multiply the number by 10 to the power of how many repeating digits there are. Since there are two repeating digits, do 10^2, which is 100.

Let N be the repeating number.

100N = 34.54545454545454545454....
N = 0.34545454545454545454....

Now subtract the two.

^ You can see that the repeating 5's and 4's get cancelled out.

If you put 342/990 into simplest terms, you get 19/55.

There you go.
