well i guess it started a longg, long time ago. you know, stories were always about how the guys save the girls, making the girls seem like weak. so the guy asking the girl out concept probably developed, making it seem that it was guy's responsiblity to do it? i don't know. that's what i think.

BUT it's perfectly fine for a girl to ask out a guy too, in my opinion

this goes back to the time of king arthur.

that whole chivalry thing...knights and mistresses and "courtly love" where the guy has to fight/risk life/kill/write and show affection while the woman acts like she's minimally impressed.

but i guess that's back then.

a lot of people i know (girls) took the first step or move in a relationship. times are changing, but a lot of people still think of it traditionally.

It probably runs even deeper than Arthurian times. Western cultures, and even many eastern cultures, are traditionally strongly partiarchical, meaning that men take the primary role in starting and supporting a family.

With the women's liberation movement, though, I don't see why many girls still cling to that traditional notion, while abhoring other traditional notions. I think it's perfectly fine for girls to take the lead, and more should do so.

Most girls are insecure. Even the most confident, independent looking girl wants to be sure that she means something important to a guy. And when he initiates the relationship, she knows that she means something to him. Thats why we're so happy when you call: because we know you cared enough to. happy.gif

But of course its totally fine for girls to go for it. guys if a girl is really going the extra mile for you, at least give her a second look, cuz it takes a lot of guts. flowers.gif

Yeah, that's one of the reasons. I'm not saying guys can't be insecure, but most girls are more self-concious than guys are (at least, that's what I think).

It's not wrong at all for a girl to ask a guy out. I can see how hard it may be for the guy to always ask out the girl. Ehhh... I've never actually done it before, but I still know that. XD

very true. but as michael has said, most cultures as we know of them today have been mainly patriarchial - therefore causing the belief that guys SHOULD ask girls. even through the feminist movements, there has been little change because [as i see it,] girls like it when guys ask them out. Girls do ask guys out, but we're usually too self-conscious to do so.

^^^ That's very true. Now it doesn't matter who asks who out. Matter of fact, my longest relationship (1yr, 2 mths) started from HER asking me. So yeah, guys tend to ask girls out first 'cuz that's tradition I guess. But like I stated before, it doesn't matter.

Dating is alot more laid back today. Go back to the roaring 20's and a date was formal. Dinner, and maybe a show. As females, on average, did not hold jobs, males were required to pay for everything as females did not have any money. This spawned several traditions, most notably, the idea that the man should pay for the date. However, obviously this can be related to the traditional forms of asking someone out.

Females want equality, but most still want to perpetuate traditions born out of their ancient social inequalities. Maybe because it's alot easier and convienent to have the male pay for everything, ask you out, and drive you around, lest he feel guilty.
