Aye.

I was wondering who else plays Super Smash Brothers: Melee on cB. So, who plays?

Do you play competive Melee?
Are you in the tournament circuit?
Who are your primary and secondary characters?
Anyone in here a pro?

I have been playing for some time, but I just recently got very interested in advanced techniques, play, and competive Melee.

My main characters are:
Peach.
Marth.
Fox.
Ness.
Ice Climbers.

This is probably one of my favorite games of all time. Absolute love for this game.

I play it with my son (who's only 6 yet still manages to kick my ass everytime).

He's usually Pikachu and I'm Kong.

I suck and got the game used (hey - I'm broke!) so I don't have a manual or anything. I'd love to learn how to really play though.

Awww. That's adorable. Your son, not you being broke or wanting to learn. Heh heh.

Ok. Best place to learn is the internet. They have some really amazing combo videos and tutorials on how to play to perfection. Check google video, just search "SSBM." Check out Game FAQs for some basics and some more character specific info. And, now, the ultimate information and community for SSBM: smashboards.com

Check that place out and spend any prolonged amount of time there and you will get better. The game is really amazing after you start to learn about advanced techniques. It's crazy.

Just thought Id post this. One of my friends wrote a post on our board about his adventure in SSBM.

QUOTE
Ok now to begin this is a true story. I'm not sure if this is where it belongs since there is probably a space for Life and Events somewhere...but it reminded me of The Day Physics Ruined Matt's Life which is here so I'm putting this here also...

Ok, imagine if you will....college....are you doing it? I said imagine! Ok good....

Now when we are in our rooms we leave the doors open. Why? Because we're social! Everyone does it so just shut your mouth. Now I dont spend too much time in my room but I notice whenever I go by there is a certain door that is ALWAYS open and these two steriotypical nerdy kids are always inside playing video games. One is always on the computer for WoW, and the other is on his Gamecube wasting away the days with...none other than...Super Smash Brothers Melee!

Now all of us have dry-erase boards on the doors so we can leave messages for each other. So a few days into school they write up on their board "SSBM Wins: Loses: " I thought it was well suited for the geeky type but after a few days I noticed they had a good 20 tallies under wins and none under loses. This is when I began to think...

Ok so a few days later some kid comes into my room asking to use my stapler. It's a reasonable request because sometimes when you pack all of your stuff for college you forget about stupid things like that. But that's when I got my idea....

So I walk over to the room of the two kids with my bag in my hand and ask to use a stapler. The kid on the computer reaches into his desk and pulls it out. I stand watching the other kid playing Smash Bros like I knew he would and wait for my chance. When his fight against the computer ends it goes back to the Character Select Screen and I go for it...

"Is that Fox McCloud over there?" I ask, sounding like an idiot I'm sure. He moves over to Fox and starts a fight against a computer controlled Falco. I told him all about how I was awesome and Star Fox and how I could beat him at that game easilly. Then I start asking him how to do "that flame move" or "shoot the laser thing" ect...ect...

By the time the fight is over he is convinced I'm such a moron he asks if I want to play a game. His roommate leans over and say "Add another tally to the board?" I wanted to laugh but I kept a straight face and pretended I had no idea what he meant.

"Here," he said, handing me the controller. "You can even set it up just the way you want it." I almost cried in joy but I kept a straight face. I made sure to take my time so it looked like I didn't know what I was doing. I turned damage on 200% and turned off all items. Then I picked Final Destination. This was to make sure 'luck' had nothing to do with our fight.

When the battle began I started to worry. This kid spends ALL day EVERY day playing and I haven't done it in awhile...but I decide to give it my best. He is Cpt. Falcon (the character Mike's brother Matt always uses) so I smile to myself. His first charge I time my relfector perfectly and send him flying near the edge of the screen, but he manages to recover. His roommate laughs a bit and he gets really mad.

His second charge I roll out of the way and grab him from behind. Quickly I throw him to the ground, activate my reflector again, and send him sailing off into the background. Game...set...match.

After that I placed the controller on the ground, walked over to the board, added the first tally under losses, and walked out of the room without saying a damn thing.

When I got back to my room I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. Today I checked and they have 43 wins and 1 loss.

I used to do that with Super Smash Bros for N64. But I think it's more helpful to play against one good human (unless you're playing exclusively 4 player matches). The AI ain't half bad though.

Of course, nothing beats playing with friends who are skilled. You get good feedback in the form of trash talking, plus it's fun to trash talk as well. If you play with a variety of people, you get exposed to real people's strategies too.

I've never played "competively" so to speak, but I did beat everyone in my physics class last year _smile.gif

My friend is mad at me because I tarnished his perfect record or whatever by a complete fluke. I was kinda just messing around with the controller and I knocked him off the platform. ^_^U
But yeah. I play! I'm usually... -cough- Fox.

I agree.

I always got better at SSB/M and Soul Calibur II when I was playing with friends.

Yeah. When the fight doesn't matter much and I just want to have some fun I play with Ice Climbers, Ness, Ganondorf, and Fox alot.

However, if the fight is serious, I stick with Peach most of the time. Sometimes I'll play my Marth.

I don't have the right equipment, but I might be able to some time.

For me, I started out as pikachu. Pika was my main character back on the 64, but her abilities were down played in the sequel. So, I dropped her once I started to play Melee more. I picked up Marth. I played Marth all the time. Got boring. So, I wanted to play someone new.

At this point, I had never seen anyone really play Peach. Ever. So, I wanted to pick her up. I found her to be alot of fun. Little did I know that at about the same time, Peach was being found to be a very viable option in high skill level tournament play. Although her style of fighting is much unlike any other character in advanced play, thanks to her floating abilities, she proved to be a very popular choice among advanced players.

She is currently one of the more popular characters among serious Melee tournament goers.

My Peach is trash compared to the pros. However, when I play 1 on 1 with a friend, Peach is the way to go. Her down smash is amazingly helpful. Spam it and you'll get called cheap. Either way, it is often held as one of the best smashes in the game. With huge priority, great speed, and amazing damage (Up to 60+ in one attack) I believe Peach's down smash is the best move in the game.

However, her down smash is just the beginning. Combine her floating abilities, her float cancel, her sold airials, her fantastic dash, and her projectile turnips, she is a great character. Hard to master, but well worth the time.

Try her out sometime.

That's funny. My sister-in-law came over and although she had no idea how to play, she was kicking butt with Peach. She refused to play any other character.

Oh and I did visit some sites but haven't been around to the smashboards yet. Thanks for the advice. =)

That's the beauty of Smash bros. A total newbie can enjoy it thorougly, as well as someone who is very experienced with the game. Usually, the fun you have as a newbie encourages you to get better.

If Smash Bros Online is released for Revolution, we gotta have some sort of online tournament thing.

Exactly. It's a very simplistic game at first glance, and the basics can be taught rather easily. However, there are very complex aspects to it that advanced players can enjoy later on, like wavedashing, short hopping, fast falling, L-canceling, and chain throwing.

Also, next installment of Smash Brothers will most likely be first available as a release title on the Nintendo Revolution. Most likely, it will feature online play. Going to be interesting. I hope it can be played with the gamecube controller, cause I can't imagine playing Smash Bros. with the revolution controllers.

That's true. But, the game might not be designed around that controller. I think they will be focusing on supporting their new controllers and franchises. It could turn out to be really lame.

Yeah, respect.

I play on and off. Right now I'm on. I play with my little brother and we like to team up on some level 9 bots.

My main chararcter has got to be: Zelda/Shiek

Not that many Zelda/Shiek users huh...

Otherwise, I can work everyone else pretty well.

ehh...I really tried playing this game, but with lack of interesting characters (I really don't like any of the Nintendo Crew...too childish), and the fact...I dunno what the fact is, but I just don't find this game fun to play.

I tried forcing myself to play it for a week or two, but it got old really fast. When the game came out on 64, I played with it for awhile, and got tired after about a month. My brother took to it hardcore. When it came out for 64, I played it for a couple weeks, but the way fighting carries out, something about the mechanics screams cheapness and not deep.

[2cents]
Like, when I play Soul Calibur, it feels like a fighting game. When I play Street Fighter, it feels like a fighting game. When I play Tekken, it feels like a fighting game. When I play Mortal Kombat, it feels like a fighting game.
When I play Smash Bros., I feel like I'm playing a game that was made for 10 year olds.
Throwing turnips at my opponents, "cartoon violence", and comic mischief just lacks a certain seriousness that I've needed in my video gaming since the end of elementary school.

As far as the whole "but it has deep, advanced tactics..."
1. Those are mostly glitches and exploitations of timing that weren't meant to be found by the intended audience of children, and certainly weren't found by them.
2. If enough young adults devote too much time and money to ANYTHING, the way they did Melee, or say DDR, they can find "something deeper". It still doesn't make the game fun, just more ways to achieve comic mischief. When I look at this game, it's what most people see when they look at South Park vs. GoldenEye or Halo.
Is the jury still out on young adults devoting their time to things made for children, and attributing false, or unimportant meaning? Look at anime conventions...

A game with kiddy music and boring characters made for children is still a game that doesn't appeal to me, especially when more "appropriate", well-developed games in the genre exist. I like the look and sound of a well thrown punch much more than I like the look and sound of a dinosaur turning into an egg and running me over. As Wade Filewich would say, "Stop that! That's Silly!"
And as far as that depth, Nate, it exists in those Capcom games, yet I'm pretty sure I'm better at those giving half of my effort.

I, however, will make an exception for Tetris Attack. That game is lovable.
[/2cents]

::edit::

Go look for the intended audience on the case.
For some reason, this game was made for Teen and above and America, yet in Europe, it's reccommended for anyone over the age of 3. I think Americans may just be stupid. Children cannot handle controlling the "Comic Mischief and Mild Violence" that they see in afternoon cartoons.

Actually, of all the games I have played, I still think that it is the most balanced and fair games I have ever played. It is also fairly deep as party fighters go.

Hey, if it is a good game, I'll play it. I enjoy the gameplay. If it was a bad game with a "serious" facelift I wouldn't care that much. Infact, that cliche fictious seriousness isn't that attractive anyways.

Halo definately takes itself seriously, but I really don't like the game. Same with Tekken and any other number of video games marketed to a more mature audience.

Don't be so sure that the intended audience was children. Note the success of the 64 Smash Bros. with older crowds. Nintendo knew it would sell to those some demographics and maybe even appeal to them more now, and it clearly has.

Also, it is speculated that wave dashing was found by the developing teams before launch. This may or may not be true, but I don't really mind either way. It adds to the depth and quality of gameplay, I love Wave Dashing.

Also, nearly all other advanced techniques are in no way glitches or harmful exploitations. For example, l-canceling was programed into the game and was also present in the 64 version as Z-canceling. Short hoping and fast falling is the same story. Shuffling is simply the skill to combine all of these inteded elements for maximum speed, accuracy, and maneuverability.

In fact, of nearly all the practical advanced techniques possible, only wave dashing seems to be a real canidate as a glitch.

It's kind of hard to argue the point as it is in the eye of the beholder and simply a matter of taste. In my humble opinion, Melee is a very good game. I enjoy playing it more than nearly any other game at this period in time.

QUOTE(Xagrand @ Feb 23 2006, 5:46 PM) *
Is the jury still out on young adults devoting their time to things made for children, and attributing false, or unimportant meaning? Look at anime conventions...

Not exactly made for children.
Also, I'm not attributing any kind of profound meaning to the game. I simply enjoy playing it. For entertainment. It's fun.

QUOTE(Xagrand @ Feb 23 2006, 5:46 PM) *
And as far as that depth, Nate, it exists in those Capcom games, yet I'm pretty sure I'm better at those giving half of my effort.

I like Capcom games. But, in reality, don't they have just about the same number of "glitches and exploitations?" Don't they have children like appeals and audiences? Heck, half of those games are comprised of comic book characters. Your arguments could be applied to a rather large number of Capcom fighting games. But, I still enjoy alot of them. I understand that depth exists in many of them as well. I should actually spend more time on some 2D fighters because I do enjoy them. However, I think that they are, on average, less developed, less fair, and less balanced than Super Smash Brother Melee.

QUOTE(Xagrand @ Feb 23 2006, 5:46 PM) *
I, however, will make an exception for Tetris Attack. That game is lovable.

Tetris Attack is a great game. One of my favorites. It is "childish" I guess, however the intellect and skill involved with being an advanced player is far from childish. The game play is fantastic. By far my favorite puzzle game of all time.

I feel nearly the same about Melee, and I enjoy it.

But, it's cool. Since you aren't down with Melee anymore, you can always help me out with CVS2. Or, we could do more important things than play video games, all depending.

"Don't they have children like appeals and audiences? Heck, half of those games are comprised of comic book characters. "

I was mostly talking of the SF canon and Darkstalker's canon series, not the spin-off's made in the mid/late 90's when Capcom was obviously on drugs, making crappy tag series.
Have you played SFIII at all?

"It is also fairly deep as party fighters go."

Yeah. I don't like going to parties. Maybe this is why I don't like this game.

"I enjoy playing it more than nearly any other game at this period in time."

Someone owns a copy of Final Fight that they were probably enjoying more than any other game at that period of time. Did you ever learn how to wavedash at that game, or the infinite and throw combos? Come on, it's deep man!

"Since you aren't down with Melee anymore, you can always help me out with CVS2. Or, we could do more important things than play video games, all depending."

Or I can just hate you, and block you on AIM.

Remember Destrega? No one else does either...

Soul Calibur has nearly no real gore value. And weapon attacks, which is what the series is known for and is comprised mostly of, bring cartoonish sound effects and bright anime like flashes, and weapon movements are followed by purplish wave effects.

Tekken has characters including a break dancing rastafarian, a Bruce Lee photocopy, and a leapord head wearing pro wrestler. The gore value is also limited, with punches striking with, again, bright flashes.

Street Fighter starred Jean Claude Van Dam.

Mortal Kombat was bad ass though.

The day a style of media in which Samurai X is classified is called "For Kids" is the day pigs fly.

Anyway, I loved Killer Instinct. Streaming together a million hit combos was awesome. And it had cool characters. But that doesnt mean you, or I can't like something a bit on the cartoony side, especially when its as solid of a fighter as SSB is. Great and memorable characters, distinct and individual character strategies, excellent level involvement, fun bonuses, and a statistics page more detailed than anything, even GTA.

man, I need toget this game again and hook up my GCN.

I'm glad you are going to give her a chance.
Compared to Pikachu's abilities, I think you will be presently surprised at how much Peach can make up for her speed in her shear power.
Also, her recovery is vastly superior to that of Pikachu's. Pika suffers from alot of lag in her Up-B recovery. Peach can virtually diminish all lag using her float to come back to the stage. In adition to her floating abilities, her Up-B ensures an even more refined recovery.

Yeah. Super Princess Peach.

In true reflection of the female psyche, when Nintendo has devised Peach's own adventure, the developers have decided to highlight the true strengh of the female warrior. Emotions. Peach emits raging fires when angry. When sad, rivers of tears flow from her eye lids. When happy she sings with joy and is given the ability to soar above ground. An awful insult. Why can't she just kick ass? To me, it's both hilarious and kind of insulting.

Yeah, me and my friends do that every once and a while. Not that great. I'm not much for the glitches, although some of them are interesting (i.e. this one).

For those of you who want to try it, you also need to do the Super Scope infinite shot glitch. Someone grab a Super Scope and fire five short bursts (Just click A normally to execute a short burst, don't hold it. It should fire three small orbs). After that, fire two fully charged shots, and then while charging a third have someone hit you with a weak attack (Like a neutral grounded A). After that, the Super Scope should fire an infinite amount of bullets. This will allow you to be able to do the black hole glitch. Just imitate the video after that and it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, sorry if I didn't recite the Super Scope infinite trick correctly, it's been a while.

I'm not exactly sure why she jumps that way. However, it isn't necessary to the trick.
It also doesn't take that that long to do. Just play with the distance between the two shining characters, and the distance between the Super Scope guy and the shiner in front of him or her.

Note that the left shine guy (either fox or falco) has to be on the same team as the super scope guy (make it a peach) so that the super scope bullets go passed him.

Have a peach throw up tournips at spots that create that circular orb look. It may take some time, but note where the tournips linger most and throw alot up at that spot until one sticks. Once you got one stuck, don't stop throwing them. Keeping going. Throw like 20 or so.

The super scope has to keep going during the entire process.

After you get a ball of tournips stuck inside the stream of super scope bullets, you can stop firing the super scope and watch as the tournips float in air. Then you are free to jump inside and such. Sometimes the game will freeze up, and more commonly it will lag a bit. It's worth doing a few times, but nothing that special. I would rather play a few good 1v1 matches on FD. happy.gif

Alright. E3 Trailer for the distant Super Smash Brothers: Brawl. Some new characters revealed. Maybe some insight into some new battle points. New level hints. And, some real huge surprises. (First third party character to be featued in a Smash Bros. game as playable and it's better than Sonic.)
The end of this trailer seriously made my jaw drop. I was like, "Holy sh*t! What the f**k! f**king awesome. Amazing."

Ness isn't exactly weakened so much as he is replaced in the tier list. Adjusting for the brand new set of physics, Ness is pretty much just as great, if not greater, than he was. May take a bit more time to become familiar and comfortable with, but he is definately a viable character (despite is unpopular status in tournament play). His fair (f-air; forward air) alone is worth strong notice.

Marth and Fox are top tier and are definately good choices. Marth is more of a beginner handle and Fox's speed tends to throw him into more technical play. As of date, my most technical character is Fox, despite Peach being my best.

Despite the fact that it will no longer be a launch title, Brawl doesn't seem to have been pushed back that far. Recent mentions of a release date hold a TBA 2007 release. So, less than a year after the Wii hits stores. It's worth the wait, given that they need the time to work on it. wink.gif

Yay for lots of guys playing Zelda! The closest to a compeition ive been to was at my schools Japanese Club when they brang it in. They all were laughing at me b.c i used Zelda. And then i sorta pwned them.

I cant wait for SSBB!! If they get the mutliplayer working, they will be godly to me. Well worth the wait till 07 (when i graduate!)

Melee is sweet enough. Doesn't bother me to dream of Brawl. Melee and Brawl will have such similar physics and gameplay that it won't be much of a leap from Melee to Brawl, at least in comparison to the leap from the original to Melee. Plus, the use of the cube controller will be great.

What I'm worried about is that certain techniques (i.e. wavedashing) may be taken out. I hope the developers recognize the merits of wavedashing in series Melee play, and take time to include it. I'm sure it'll be crazy either way.

I've been looking for scrub cash games for like a million years now.
Everytime I'm around people who aren't hip to my mean skills I'm all, "Cash game? Anyone?!"
My friends always ruin it for me though. I want money! WAAA!

Yeah, so, cash game anyone? laugh.gif
