Obesity in today's world has grown in drastic measures in the past 50 years. If everyone is so concerned about obesity why isn't anyone doing anything? The Media has been saying the same damn thing >> eat well, sleep right, exercise and all that jazz but all has failed. What can we do to help stop this growing health risk? [SIZE=1]

btw, i was really overweight throught middle school. i lost all of it during that 8th grade summer and it has really improved my self esteem and my social life. so im not saying i hate fat people or bullshizz like that, im just trying to help today's society and asking for opinions on how to help.

Something I personally thing is to raise standards for gym and for lack of a better word, have parents force there kids to do more physical activity. For the gym thing, people are always complaining about how hard it is, but its really not. For example at my school, the time is 8 minute mile for guys and a 9 minute mile for girls. I understand that some people are just bad at running, but if its that hard suck it up and go run more in your free time. Stop being lazy and get in shape.

I still say we get rid of mc donalds and burger king. A double whopper with cheese has 1500 calories alone, without mayo or anything.

Say what? I had no clue.

Change has to come from within, IMO. It isn't enough to get rid of fast food restaurants because they can still eat unhealthy with all the junk food that's out as well as not exercise. People have to want to change themselves and not rely on the media or other outlets to tell them.

just because your not good at sports doesn't mean anything. as long as you try, than that's what counts disregarding if your good or not.

I've always believed that for most people, weight/obesity is at least 90% psychological. Food can become an addiction, a comfort, etc. I have to work hard to keep my weight in check. I've had a child and my metabolism isn't what is used to be. I think a lot of society's focus in regards to the obesity situation is centered on fast foods or junk foods. True, they are loaded with fats. However, I think the real problem lies in the fact that we have a huge sedantary population.

Just my opinion(s).

i like your idea that obesity can be 90% psychological, because without the mind-set to lose weight you've got no determination. Society shouldn't be focused on the fast foods or junk foods because the people chose to go eat there more often than they should, they should focus on the people. sounds kinda democratic.....

Sometimes I think it can be helped, but not always. My mom has been eating 1200 calories a day for like two years, and she is still 300 pounds.
She can't walk, she's handicapped, so there isn't really any sports she can do..

pretty steven was watching MTV true life the other day, about those obese kids. pretty steven was disgusted at some of the attitudes of these kids, especially corey, the black male from houston. pretty steven is sick of americans thinking that everything should have a easy painless fix such as in this case gastric bypass surgery. pretty steven wanted to smack the shit out of corey once he said that it wasnt his fault he was fat and that he should eat 4 cheeseburgers and 2 mcflurries because after surgery everything will be fine. you can't blame it on the food---yes, mcdonald's and other unhealthy fast food is high in fat, but it's not fattening. if you eat a moderate amount of mcdonald's and exercise, you aren't hurting your body. it's all about moderation. you can get fat by eating a lot of oranges, and not gain a pound by eating a small plain burger and fries.

Good to see you around again, Andrew.

It seems that nobody is doing anything because obesity has now become the norm in America. Everybody's used to seeing all the other fat people, so they think that it's okay that they're utterly disgusting to look at.

Restaurants aren't focusing on cutting back on how many calories are in their food, especially fast food restaurants. Clothing stores, rather than keeping their sizes constant, change their sizes so that larger sizes are labeled with smaller numbers. (I used to be a size 4 at Banana Republic; now I'm a size 0. I have not grown thinner.)

well 50 years ago. obesity was more a genetic problem wasn't it? it was like a genetic defect (you could say)

i agree with the person that said it was psychological because i think it is. i'm not skinny but i'm not overweight neither according to my BMI. but relatively wise i'm fat thanks to the media tongue.gif (>,<) hehe

i do excercise but i don't lose much weight. it depends on the person. most people who do a lot of sports actually weigh a lot too (usually 125+) just because of muscle weight and they eat a lot of food too.

most people who weigh less do a lot of cardio excercise or are just naturally skinny.

genetically speaking. some people lose weight easier and for some people it's harder for them to lose.

i don't know about banning fast food chains. i'll admit i'm a sucker for mcdonalds. =) it's so good! but i only eat there like once a week, if not, then not then once a month.

i don't know obese people sometimes disappoint me, it's like they've given up hope. i don't think surgery is a solution. they just need that self-confidence in themself. just walk a bit more and whatnot.

i'm still self conscious when i go for a jog. but when i see an obese person walking i'm like "wow they're so courageous =)"

so yea...it's all psychological.

Yeah, I watched that episode as well. I was also very disgusted about his attitude towards food. He didn't seem to care at all about how much he was eating because a surgery, that is life threatening, would fix it all. That's disgusting.

We were talking about obesity in psychology class, and how it's extremely hard for people to lose any weight because of how they're looked at. Obviously, they do stand out and are afraid to go into a gym because of that. Then, they feel depressed and eat for comfort.

Yes, sometimes it can't be helped, but there are so many things we can do now to decrease weight. But then again, there are quick fixes everywhere, like the fast food joints. I think gastric bypass surgery should only be done if it's the last aternative..not just a quick fix.

That, and double Whopper with cheese only has 990 calories [1], but the point is still a good one.

Eddie, there's no such thing. No one forces them to eat anything, and no one sneaks them unhealthy food. Its up to the consumers. Obesity is controlled by willpower.

However, there are cases where the body produces an offbalance of hormones, and the obese cannot lose weight normally.

my personal fitness techer said that at resturaunts they serve you about double the regular serving size. so when u get your food it makes you think and feel that you "have to" eat it all.

if you care enough about your health you have to do something about it..its never too late.

Well, in my opinion, people who are obese just have absolutely no self confidence. It just starts out completely stupid. They're skinny, and they think their fat. So they eat food. They get more unself confident, more food. And it just happens more and more..all the way up to obesity. I guess it just starts with being unselfconfident. How to fix it, they just need to suck it up and think, "I'm a great person. Just cuz` I'm "fat" doesn't mean that I'm the rudest person in the world. If people don't wanna talk to me, then that sux for them." then go for a nice long jog, do it again and again. =D
