If this belongs in fashion, feel free to move it.

QUOTE
As an Asian-American, I was pretty pissed off when I read the recent articles on Abercrombie & Fitch featuring negative, stereotypical images of Asians on their new line of T-shirts, which I’m glad got pulled off the shelves of every single A&F store.

One of the shirts has a picture of two Asian men at the Wongs Brothers Laundry Service and reads, “Two Wongs Can Make It White.” I don’t know if you find this to be funny but I really don’t think this image is something to be laughed at. It can greatly offend the earlier generations of Asian-Americans who came to this country having to earn a living through such hard manual labor jobs. A & F spokesperson Hampton Carney claims that they make fun of everyone, but I’m sure Abercrombie would never even dare to put out an image of blacks picking cotton or Hispanics selling oranges on the street. This only shows how Asian-Americans are viewed to be apathetic and passive about such racial issues. It upsets me that they think they can get away with making a public mockery of Asians when in fact they know very little about the negative effects it can have on them.

Another shirt features a smiling Buddha image, which reads, “Abercrombie and Fitch Buddha Bash Get Your Buddha on the Floor.” What are they thinking? They’re bashing on a religious icon strongly valued throughout many Asian families. If A & F were to make a joke out of an image of Jesus Christ on the cross, I bet many people would be incredibly offended by it. I think religion is a touchy subject that they shouldn’t even mess around with in the first place.

Another shirt reads, “Wok-N-Bowl Let the Good Times Roll Chinese Food and Bowling,” which I don’t find to be as offensive but still creates an Asian stereotype. Some shirts also show smiling men with slanted eyes wearing dorky-looking conical hats, which creates a negative image of Asian males, when in reality many Asian-American men look nothing like it.

Although many of these negative images were mostly targeted towards the Chinese, I think it affects the Asian-American community and possibly other minorities as well. I was already annoyed at the fact A & F barely hires anyone outside the white race and by the fact that almost all the models in their catalogs are typical white people. When my Asian-American friend tried to get a job there and came in for an interview with a few of his white friends, the lady looked at him and said, “I’m sorry but we’re looking for more of an American look,” when in fact he was born and raised up in America.

I think it’s typical corporate America and society who’s always trying to make profits even at the costs of minorities. Although there has been some progress, Asians have a long way to go before they are accepted into the American society. American society preaches tolerance, but continues to practice blatant or subtle discrimination and racism towards people of color. It’s very easy to become racist when you are not aware of the privileges you have over other people, and I would probably blame society and the media more than just pointing fingers at certain individuals. It takes both the dominant society and the subdominant society to work together in order to bring about a change.

I think Asian-Americans should definitely take advantage of such opportunities like this; to voice out their opinions and frustrations of how the media, and the system that we live in, continue to portray Asians with negative stereotypes. I’m sick and tired of being stepped on and I think we have to blame ourselves for being so apathetic about these important issues. Nothing’s going to change if we continue to let these things pass by. If it weren’t for the angry mob of people who protested outside the Abercrombie store in San Francisco, or for those who called and sent mass e-mails to the company to complain about the shirts, they would still be in the stores today and the system would win us over once again.

If that's true, I'm never going in that store again. White motha fuckas trying to be racist HAHA...lmao...the owner can suck my d**k!!!!!! Shit's worthless anyways these days. I think I'm going to go on a strike in my mall tomorrow cuz....

A&F is a publically-held and traded company, so you just invited thousands of stockholders to suck your d**k. I suggest you sit back and enjoy, because this might take a while.

Okay, now compare this to FUBU.

It wasn't meant to be intentionally racist (FUBU stands for For Us, By Us), but I think that's what it turned out to.

i've only bought one thing from there lol, cuz i heard these rumors... the A&F at our mall isn't racist... i think... the cashier guy was hawaiin i think. so i guess it's ok. but... sometimes i guess it does give off that vibe. it probably depends on the location of the store because... some places ARE less diverse and thus might be more racist then others. and my church counselor worked there, and she's asian as well (as me).

Eddie, you're asian? :o
Haha, just kidding. :D

I personally think its disgusting, but what are you going to do? Stop buying their stuff if you feel so strongly, and if enough people do, the companies will see they aren't winning and will stop selling.

Or sue. Everyone in this country sues nowadays anyway.

B. There is already a topic like this in fashion..I believe it has something to do with Hollister as well.
C. Watch your damn language. You can get your point across without whipping out everything curse in the book. Besides, it doesn't make you look mature, it makes you seem that you are younger than what you are.

Believe it or not, FUBU was a project started by a Korean company in the States as a new clothing line. Somehow it turned out to be the present day FUBU.

edit::
In fact, it was started by Samsung corporations

agreed.

You all have to accept that Abercrombie and Fitch are not the only ones having these "asian-oriented" shirts. Other stores like Aeropastale and Forever 21 also used to have these types of shirts, but were THEY ever targeted like AF was/is? I think that the only reason it's so blown out of porportion is because many people view the brand as snobbish and overrated, and only want to get a stab back at the company.

These types shirts were "in" sometime ago, many clothing lines had stereotypical asian slurs and such on their clothing. AF shouldnt be spotlighted by itself, to do so is unfair.

Wayne - ... rofl laugh.gif hahahahahhah no spamming though.. pfft.. hahahahahha lol @ pic

Yep this is definitely old news. I heard about this back in 8th grade. Come on, this was like, 4 years ago. Are they releasing another huge line of asian-oriented clothing? No. Yep, definitely out of proportion.

I agree with Val on this one -- there have been MANY companies that have manipulated the Asian culture, stereotypes, slang, etc. File a lawsuit against them? Are you kidding me? I thought this was cleared up after the whole protest thing... I barely hear anyone mention it nowadays. I saw it on TV back 4 years ago, where a HUGE line of Asians stood in front of the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego outside of the A&F store.

I never knew Aero and Forever 21 did that? I've never seen their shirts potray that. Then again, I barely shop there anyways. And hey, isn't Forever 21 the store where people worked in sweatshops for low pay or something? There was a thread about it somewhere.. but still...

Racism is everywhere. Who hasn't heard of racism in the clothing industry? Don't get me wrong but I remember Tommy Hilfiger .Everyone avoided buying the clothing .I think a lot Asians rather care less . cry.gif We are group of minority that is silent bout major offenses towards us. If there was a problem, we keep it to ourselves. But if you were white , you would get ur complaint heard , and be on tv in 2 days. Asians, we have our ways. If you tell ur parents , they will say uh huh .. just dont buy the clothing , but you would never see the a group of asians on Good Morning ,America . It just doesn't work that way .Asians have too much conflicts within our "group" we can't easily join in and say we are united ..hear us COMPLAIN. Yes , i know it's patheic they would make a "hilarious" screen tee at our expense. Don't you think it's ironic that asians are usually making that shirt in the first place.. SIGH..

it's going to be that way until we finish inbreeding . There won't be no such thing as white ppl .

it's going to be irish-mexican-korean-chinese-jamacian-AMERICAN.

.... Um.. Did you EVEN click the link? Look at the date.. Yea.. whistling.gif Old news. I would think that those who've been to A&F or heard of it should know that there aren't really any more of these shirts. And if there are, there are very few because I went in there a few days ago and I haven't seen a single shirt. Come on, this is like.. 4 years ago rolleyes.gif

Yeah, I heard about this and I even heard it from some of my friends. That store is really racist though, I am Asian too but I don't shop there and I will never plan to. I only been in there once and the employees that work there are a bit racist and look at you differently than a white person next to me. Who wants to shop there anyways? Their clothes are really expensive. Gees, are we made of money here? Don't think so!

I never knew Aero and Forever 21 did that?

Yeppp they do, but it was a while ago, like say 3-4ish years when the oriental tees were "in"

I distinctly remember Aero having a red teeshirt with like bamboo on it, saying somthing about general chow's resturant or somthing of the sort.

I wouldn't call it racism, just bad marketing.

Oh yea and btw jason, be racist against white people. I mean, seeing what this board is about and all. :P [/sarcasm]

I myself am Asian... but I don't really care about that. Well... it does kind of bother me it's a shirt and everything...

I own some shorts from A&F... Burn them? shifty.gif

Nah, that'd be a waste of my $50.

When you've heard all the racist stuff against Asians [not saying I have...] then this is pretty much a small thing.

Still, that shirt's pretty retarded. _dry.gif

Or it can be a really chinky eyed white person with really yellow skin. Although the skin color wouldn't really show up on the picture.

Definitelly.. her face shape makes her look mixed.

... Jason... I'd have to say that there aren;t any non-asians (not that I've ever seen, either in real life or pictures) that have eyes like those. mellow.gif I mean look at them.. THEY SLANT and the eyelids are thin.. like.. a certain kind of thin.. a very ASIAN kind of thin. And she has a button nose... a small nose... An asian-ish small nose. END OF STORY.

Hahah yea it is funny how you boxed the picture. :P

It's still funny how some people still think this issue is still going on.. I mean come on people.. READ THE ARTICLE! Look at the date! rolleyes.gif whistling.gif
