WHAT IS DIV?! Options

i have 2 questions:

1. basically, what does "div" mean??! is it an abbreviation for something else?

2. how do u make layouts like this?---->http://www.xanga.com/matatester2 (this is a good example that i found, so i'm just posting this site. nothing special) i make basic xanga layouts like this--->www.xanga.com/cll46. what i'm basically asking is whether or not there is a code or some kind of tutorial for layouts like ^that^ (the first example) i wanted to make layouts like that, but didn't know how. please help!!!!

<div> is an html tag. It's basically the equvalent of a text box if you use MS word. You can find out more about divs by looking at some html tutorials, or at sites like http://lissaexplains.com.
