This is a thread mainly for bilinguals. Does it get annoying when you mix up languages? I swear, i do it often...too often.
I speak English and i study in french at school. I'm currently learning dutch being it's the 2nd official language in Belgium. And i'm pretty good at it. I tend to mix these 3 languages A LOT. It gets frustrating sometimes. I was talking to my dad on the phone, asking for money (he speaks only english and dutch), i was like: i need vingt euros. He was like "wtf?" haha. Or sometimes when he's talking to me, he says "de dingen" meaning "the thing" in dutch. I usually say "alors" instead of "so". Pff. I speak french to my friends but sometimes english comes out of my mouth. It's soo frustrating. Even to my teacher...i was like "i've got a question" and she's like "tu viens de dire quoi?" Lol. My nose was red...my nose hardly gets red since i'm more black than white. It happens a lot. Some people think it's cute. ![]() But it's got it's advantage...i insult ppl sometimes, haha. Few months ago, after having sex with my boyfriend, i was like "tu crains au lit"...he thought it was a compliment...i'm not going to translate...but he did "craint". Anyways, does this happen to you guys too?? I have to watch what i say almost everytime ![]() |

QUOTE(jooleeah @ Nov 28 2005, 4:09 PM) ah that happens to me all the time. sometimes i'll start speaking chinese to my american friends. ![]() Haha I do the same thing. I grew up in a Chinese & Cambodian home so when I speak, I speak a mix of those two. I can't seem to sort them apart though. One time when I was at school, my teacher accused me of lying so I got upset and called her a racist and then she was like...what? I started going all out but luckily I cursed at her in Chinese and phew, I would have been in so much trouble. |

Yeah, that happens to me with English, Spanish and Chinese. Often, I'll mix up words while I'm speaking; ie, speak some Spanish while I'm speaking English, etc.

I speak English and Mandarin, and when I go to China/Taiwan and stay for more than a week, my English syntax starts to degrade because of my Mandarin use.
So I'd go 'Where are we?" in America, but after spending a week in China, I'll go "Where we are?" without noticing because that's the syntax for Chinese sentences. Blah it's embarrassing sometimes. |

Haha, yeah that happens to me. I go back to Hong Kong a few times a year, and there's always a cycle. I go to Hong Kong, I force myself to speak more Cantonese but a lot of it comes out as broken English. Eventually I get more used to speaking in Chinese, and that's usually around the time I go back to Canada. Then I can't stop speaking Cantonese. =p
Other than that, at home I usually speak one or the other for different sentences, I don't usually have two languages in one sentence. =] |

I usually speak Cantonese, and it's quite a common practice for people to mix a few English words in daily conversation. It's hardly avoidable.

I'm not bilingual, really, but this is my 4th year of taking Spanish. I never really spoke both languages in the same sentences but I'll type it, or think it. I'll be like "so y so went to the store." Y meaning and in Spanish...
My best friend is bilingual and her whole family pretty much speaks "Spanglish", I love it. |

lol Julia. You know, I'm half Chinese! But I can't speak it so yea. Are you Cantonese? If you are and you started speaking to me, I'd probably run to my mom and ask her to translate. :P
Anyways, well I remember I sad something in Vietnamese to my boyfriend and I was WTF?! I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth! I mean, I'm always self-conscious when it comes to speaking Vietnamese because usually I'm always nervous and I NEVER know if I'm pronouncing anything right. It sounds like I'm JUST learning to speak Vietnamese or something haha. Of course, I CAN understand Vietnamese most of the time, but I answer in English. Anyway, I do find myself talking about food and since I know the names of quite a few vietnamese foods, I would start talking and say it and my non-Vietnamese friend would be like "What?" ... Yea.. I LIKE FOOD. ![]() |

spanish, mandarin, taiwanese, japanese, french so when i speak to them and i dont know the word in one language ill switch to another language..i find this more of an advantage but yeah..i guess its embarassing when another language accidentally slips when ur speaking english..it only happened to me wen i was littler but it happens to my mom all the time..and i used to be embarrassed for her..o.O |

hmm not really..only to my grandma..hha i tend to forget many words in chinese because well i can underatnd it well, but not speak it.so when i talk to her,i use chinese words that i know and mix it up with english.and she kind of understands but if she doesnt, i give up and ask my cousins if their there to help me.
chinese, english, and a lil french from school..but mostly english. andandandand...sometimes i know words in chinese that i tend to forget the word in english..like one time in 5th grade i think,my teacher asked what i had for dinner,so i said chinese food, and he said what kind, and i forgot the words in english for it, and i said to him 'i dont know how to say it in english' because i had forgotten the word.it was brocolli.. ;x so i told him vegetable. it happens sometimes ![]() |
