Am I the only one that doesn't get why people put up an away message such as "lookin up movie times"?

Um, we don't care.

We don't care if you're looking up movie times.

Who the hell puts up an away message saying they're looking up movie times?
By the time they're finished putting the away message up they could be done looking at the movie times already.

Stupid idiots.

Is it to brag that they're going to the movies?

Even though no one cares.

I also saw this away message saying "my potential plans for today: mall with mike then movies then meeting up with brenna"

what the f**k, no one f**king cares.

so have you guys ever had anyone do the stupidest things and put an away message one?

"going to the bathroom"

why do you need an away message saying you're going to the bathroom for 3 minutes. are you afraid someone's going to im you and you're not going to be back quick enough? and the funny thing is that no one's probably going to im you.

------

I have another question.
So when you put your cellphone/phone number in your away message and tell them to call, does anyone call?

------
It doesn't really annoy me unless I'm talking to them and then they put on an away message such as "lookin up movie times". I'm kind of wondering why they can't do both at the same time.

And sure, I can just not read them.
But I do anyways. I'm just trying to wonder why people do this. It's kind of pointless.

And someone said I care that I care if people put their number in their away message or something? I don't care, I'm just wondering if people really call.

My post isn't really that long. Just spaced out.

Well, my away message pretty much alternates between "around" and "away", so I never really saw the point of those types of away messages, especially ones that detail plans like: "Out to Joe's, then going to Anna's, then back here at 3, then mall at 3:30, then maybe to Sam's" or what have you. Seems better just to put something like "Out, be back later this evening."

Admittedly, I do post schedules, but only on days when I have classes, just so people know when I might actually be in my room if they need to get a hold of me--otherwise I get messages like "When are you going to be back?" or a bunch of messages on my voicemail asking where I am.

Sometimes putting up an away message if a way for someone to know where you're at, or what you're doing without telling them. I know some people that care.

But I totally get what you mean when it's something like "going to the bathroom." If I go get food or go to the bathroom or whatever...I never even say "hold on" to the person I'm talking to because it'll take like...a few seconds.

"So when you put your cellphone/phone number in your away message and tell them to call, does anyone call?"<-in fact, yes :). Well I don't put my phone number on it...I would only want someone who originally knows my number to call.

I find it incredibly annoying when people put up away messages that are so specific yet so minimal. This one girl on my buddy list puts up an away message for just about anything. The other day she had one that said, "Looking at pictures," and another that said, "Making popcorn." Honestly, it takes....what? Two to three minutes at the most to make popcorn? I doubt anyone will be offended if you don't respond for two or three minutes, and if they are, they're pretty impatient.

I don't mind away messages that say things like, "Out to dinner with my friends. Be back at [insert time here]," or "At the mall with so-and-so. Be back at [insert time here]." Those away messages don't bother me at all.

Another thing that bothers me about away messages is when people put one up for the night saying they're sleeping. Honestly, why let your computer just run all night? -_-

I agree, those kinds of messages are pretty dumb, but the one or two times I've put up my number, people call me. Granted, it was on a more private SN that only a handful of people knew, but hey.

if you're cell phone number is in your away message, you deserve to be prank phone called. repeatedly.

i usually hide behind my away message. but the, i'm walking to my basement, getting a movie, coming back up, making popcorn, walking into my room, getting the mail, and painting my nails, are lame (while amusing)

It's pretty annoying when people detail their away messages. Mine are just obviously Not here and sometimes hateful things. I also dislike how peoples away messages are like brb, then the next second or two they're back...uhmm right what was the point of putting it up again? Hahaha that's so funny how people like to post phone number and are all like call me if you want to come over kind of thing. I find these very little things amusing. Yes I'll call you...hahahahano, if I did anyone can access my phone number not unless I block everyone. o.o

I only put away messages when I'm actually away.
Most of my friends put away messeges when they'll be back, or doing some random thing.
I mean, I only read their away message because I wanted to talk to them.

eh, i think things like "looking for movie times" is annoying and stupid. but when i'm going out, i'll put "movies and mall with becca...hit the cell" or something like that. i don't have a problem with people putting up away messages saying what they're doing that day. if i'm doing something stupid that will take a couple of minutes like getting dressed or going to the bathroom, then i'll just put my default a/m on.

haha..."looking up movie times"?

wtf?

cant you just look up movie times on the computer and stay on aim chatting while writing them down? thats what i usually do...and my away message is usually just my cell number or just plain "gone".

if people cared as much to know what im doing, theyd call the number.

edit//sorry, didn't answer the second part of that question: I've never left my cell phone number on an away message before..hm. maybe I have once, but in any case, no one called.

Eh, I only put up an away message if I know that I will be away for a while; if I'm going out or something. But it's really simple, usually: "out" or something like that. Other times, if I'm doing homework, I put up an away message so no one IMs me or something. But a lot of my away messages are excerpts from songs that I feel apply at the time.
And to your second question, I don't exactly put my cell phone in my away message, only in my profile. But people don't really call me, hah.

lol. i hate the ones that are like "SLEEP." are they so important that in the late night hours of slumber, someone will have something so wonderful to tell you that you must leave your computer on? but i put the bathroom one up sometimes.. it takes me more than 3 minutes and for some reason, someone always IMs me when I go to the bathroom... and it's what an away message is for, right? cause if you're gonna be away for hours, you might as well turn off your computer.

Uhm, people put away messages like "going to the bathroom" because they're too lazy to type "brb" to the people they're already talking to. So if they're taking a dump or something, for like 10 minutes, the person they were talking to would probably wonder where they went.

So that really grinds your gears, eh ?

I know, lmao. I'll be eager to talk to someone. Oh look, they're away. I wonder what they're doing.

'Can you keep up
Baby boy, make me lose my breath
Bring the noise, make me lose my breath
Hit me hard, make me lose my (pant, pant)
Can you keep up
Baby boy, make me lose my breath
Bring the noise, make me lose my breath
Hit me hard, make me lose my breath'

Um... yeh. That explains alot.

And it annoys me when people put up away messages that they make themselves like "away" "not here" "around". No shit.

Hahaha, that's pretty funny. Who would put that as an away message? That's just funny.

I do know a person that writes Xanga entries completely on what she bought that day. "Like, today, I bought this purse that was, lyk, SO PRETTY OMFG!"

Once she even bitched at her mom online for not buying her a $200 coat because they couldn't afford it.

On her MSN screennames, it's always something like "Today I spent $40 on a t-shirt! I bought this this and this". Blahablabalh

that stuff IS annoying... this girl on my MSN right now... her whole 'title' thing is on what she's planning to do for the day... uggh.

i usually just use the away messages i save... like song lyrics or an inside joke of the day. mellow.gif

Now, when I think back of the times I put up away messages in ICQ, I think I used to be part of those pathetic people you desribed. sad.gif

Not anymore though. I think if someone is really that urgent to find me, he/she will get a way to contact me OTHER THAN through the Internet. ermm.gif

hahahahah this makes me laugh. i never see these kinds of away messages because i use msn, not aim. but i find it unnecessary when i'm talking to someone online, and they say "brb, i gotta go take a crap" or something similar. i really don't need to know when someone just has to go take a dump.

QUOTE(mipadi @ Nov 27 2005, 2:59 PM)
Well, my away message pretty much alternates between "around" and "away", so I never really saw the point of those types of away messages, especially ones that detail plans like: "Out to Joe's, then going to Anna's, then back here at 3, then mall at 3:30, then maybe to Sam's" or what have you. Seems better just to put something like "Out, be back later this evening."

yeah the ones that go into detail *sigh* I dont like those

I put up aways that are funny... shifty.gif
or just lyrics or something
But they are usually really random and funny
and not like "im in the shower" or w/e
