it's my final year at high school (wooo hooo to seniors of '06!!) and i need a health class credit (the most BORING class EVER! but if you are new/freshman, try to get it over with ASAP!) so...i have health :P the thing is...there are two mentally disabled kids (imma abbreiviate it to the MDKs) in my class. no, that doesn't mean im mentally disabled...it's because everyone needs an education, esp. MDKs...anyways...on with my story..

today, the teacher was asking the class "what did you do this summer?" (i know...very elementary-type of question) and we went around the class...the one of the two MDKs got up to talk about his summer...the other one followed after...when they were talking, of course, their grammer wasn't the best...but while they were talking, i was quite amazed on how talented they were on talking...even though they were staring out in space...

i mean, usually, whenever i saw a MDK passing by, i'm usually freaked out or whatever, which i feel horrible to admit, but when i saw them speaking...they are actually very intelligent...in their own way...it's interesting...

most students are actually less intelligent than an everage MDK. how embarrassing is that? i was definetly one of the few who clapped after they spoke...i felt so proud of them...

how do you guys feel about MDKs? you look down on them? <[edit'd] or you encourage them to become more skillful? i wanna know...

=.= well did you read it? the POINT in this was to figure how people are in reality. how do people, i.e. you + me, view the MDKs? it's not focused on health class...=.=

I was required to take a health class my sophomore year and I, too, had two mentally disabled kids in my health class. I've never been that freaked out by mentally disabled kids because my old next door neighbor was mentally disabled and so was the son of my mom's friend who we drove home from school every day. Sometimes, some of the mentally disabled kids can say the cutest things. Like one of MDKs in my health class (a girl) was talking to her aid when we were reviewing pregnancy. She kept insisting that she wanted a baby and that she was ready and loved the guy that she liked verrrrry much. It was funny...but not in a disrespectful way. My school has a very good program for mentally disabled kids. We've won state in special olympics three years in a row now, I think.

I normally just feel very bad for the MDK's... I wouldn't really talk to them at all though, since none of them were in my classes...

that's a bit mean to say about those kids, lbjshaq2345, but you have the right to speak your mind...

im not saying these MDKs are super intelligent...but usually...when you think of those kids, you'd think people who just do nothing, stare into space, and yell for no apparent reason...
when i saw these kids spoke out loud (while no other student could do the same, meaning; speaking out loud) i felt so proud of them..how well they're learning...

[edit] i wouldn't talk to them either cuz, it'll be hard to have a steady conversation.

A common misconception is that 'MDKs' are stupid.

They're really not. They just can't express themselves well, if at all.
Its not surprising that many are smarter than the average person.

However, some disabilites cause them to only be able to reach a child's mental capacity for their entire lives. But for children, they are pretty smart.

There are different types of disorders...some types are where they can think just fine, just have hard ways of expressing themselves..I mean, they are people after all. Something has to be going on in their heads. You can't just label them "MDK"'s...because some have worse cases then others..

Actually. My best friend is in all gifted classes, except this one special ed class because she also has a mental disorder. It doesn't make her dumb..

Well, the mentally disabled kids aren't stupid. They are just the ones who are a bit slower in mild cases. But I have worked with one of those people before, and I found out that they really aren't that hard to communicate but sometimes that person would slow me down or interrupt me. Also, I am impatient too but their actions would only be intolerable in rare cases.

I'm sure many people would be freak out when they see something unusual at school. I'm hard of hearing. Of course, people stare at me because I have "hearing aids" electronic sound device. I think it would share the same experience with mdk.

I wouldn’t look down at mentally disabled person. They're still people but most people aren’t use to socialize with them. Maybe that’s why people feel uncomfortable about them.

Some people are just disgusted of them because they sometimes walk weird and they have weird faces.

I used to be scared of them... I don't know. I think I still am. I know I shouldn't be, I mean they are humans just like us. They just born in a wrong way. I feel bad for them. I'm glad I didn't born like that. I mean if I was them, I would be sad in my whole life. I would not like it of course. I mean they wanted to have a great face, great body...but they end up with a mentally disabled body. I guess I think I know how they feel. Well there is this one american/african mentally disabled dude...and he's really scary. My friends think he should be a track team. Everyone calls him gorilla because..... he runs like crazy to people and make gorilla noises -_-;; I feel bad for him. But I wish he really stops what he is doing. Chasing people and scaring people.

Hm... and yeah I'm proud of them too sometimes. When they do a creative, wonderful speech. It's great to see how skillful they are tries their best to be what they wanted to be.

They are certain mentally disabled people I dislike..... the american/african dude... and... this other guy. He follows you wherever you go. Like if you don't answer his question..he just follows you. I mean I didn't know what he was talking about and I told him "I'm sorry, I can't help you" and he kept on following me... T_T;;; And not to be rude, but he has scary eyes too -_-;;; I'm not the only one who thinks that way, half of the people in my school thinks that way. He has a scary face. and he'll just follow you and follow you and just stares at you deeply.... and he walks like a zombie too T_T;;

It's just some mentally disable I don't want to be near. I DO feel bad for them.... but I just can't help their behavior out.

No, I don't look down on the mentally disabled.
Everyone, including them, have talents and abilities of their own, but we just assume that they don't, and that they're different. They're not. _smile.gif

I would never look down on a MDK.
Sometime last year during PE class, the MDK's would come out to run on the track for a little bit. One of the MDK's was able to talk, though not very well. However, we were able to comprehend him when he made conversation with our teacher. He started to do these karate kicks all of a sudden. Our class stared on, but no one laughed. In fact, most of the guys started to cheer him on, and everyone clapped for him at the end. Heh _smile.gif

Why look down on them? Why make fun of them? My brother had a very good friend who was down syndrome. Actually - she was one of his friends sister. He enjoyed her and loved her so much. They had a great time watching wrestiling together. By many peoples standards, she may not have been all there, but to my brother she was a great friend. He would bring her a b-day present, x-mas gift every year. He never left valentines day out either. They were not a romantic couple, just friends. He loved her dearly. She has since passed away, which was a very sad time for many people who knew her.
