A few of our members have expressed interest in this feature (view here) so as of today, it's been added in. However, some of our members have also expressed their discontentment with this new feature saying that it's a bit "stalkerish".

If you still don't know what I'm talking about, scroll down to the bottom of topic and forum pages and notice that now it tells you which members are viewing that page.

So it's up to you guys. Keep or remove?

I dont really see how it is stalkerish. You can always go under invisible mode. And the people who are saying this, what are you hiding from? shifty.gif Meh I dont care if it stays or goes. I think its pretty neat myself.

Perhaps because some people want to see if people are actually reading thier topics and who. Because it excites some to know who's reading the same topic as them.

If it really bothers you, you could always just browse invisible.

At any rate, can you not post the Big Brother is watching thing at the bottom of every single post? I'm sure you have a reason for doing it, but I also assure you that it's not a good one.

(While we're on the subject, going easy on the "Flood control" post thing would be chill, too.)

i think, from now on, after my 'big brother is watching' thing, i will show why this is quite a bad idea.

if you don't like it..and don't want to sign on as anon/invisible, then do what I used to do on other boards.. [before the glorious days of signing in as anon]

while reading a topic..just open another window to view the board index, move fast like a cat, no one knows you're still reading, and you show up as viewing the board index..

just a suggestion..if you don't like the feeling of being watched

i'm not big brother, fool.

anyways; the reason i'm against this feature is it's rather pointless. all it promotes is too things:

1. so people can see who visits their topic and cry about who doesn't comment.
2. so people can see that no one else reading the same topic as them and cry about it.
3. it lets you see who's in a topic so that you can hold an off topic conversation in them.

Have any of these things actually happened yet? I don't think so--certainly not on a large scale. The function is nice to see who is viewing a topic and who might be replying in one--it can be useful in some topics where there is fast-paced discussion on an issue. I don't think there are people going around crying about who doesn't comment, or that no one is reading the topic. I honestly don't think anyone really examines the users that closely in a topic; if they need to know for some reason who is viewing/replying in a topic, they can, but otherwise, I don't think there are users going around stalking people, or sitting at their computer hitting "Refresh" so they can see who is looking at their topic.

but that's the only given reasons to have this feature.

why does someone need to know who's viewing or replying? if it's a fast paced discussion, like in debate, you merely assume the other person is there. If it's just a regular thread- you just post. you don't direct your post at someone in particular based on whether they're reading the thread or not.

there are probably some users right now, sitting at thier computer looking at a topic they created and refreshing the page to see who's reading it.

and i prefer not to use invisible because if someone wants to see if i'm on to PM me, i want them to be able to. i just don't want a useless function that doesn't have any purpose but to let people cry about how little people are reading thier topic.

i guess some people don't want to be seen as obsessive people that care immensely about their .. whatsitcalled. hmm. reputation! so if someone sees someone reading a lot on the love/hate threads while they claim to be indifferent to people's opinions... rolleyes.gif of course it doesn't always mean something like that, but just as long as it doesn't start anything, i'm happy.

i personally don't care. it's a pretty cool feature, but i can do with/without it.

When they're underline, hover over the name. It tells you that they're replying. (I remind myself of Frankie. biggrin.gif) The blue&bold ones are mods.

It's basically just the the other list. Blue text denotes an official member or official designer. Bold text denotes a moderator. Italicized text denotes headstaff or admin.

It is a neat feature, but I'm logged in as invisible so I don't have any reasons to complain.

But guys, you're telling Mr. Acid to just log in as invisible and basically to ignore the feature, right? So, it's possible to ignore things/people, right? Just ignore his "big brother is watching" thing.

Mr. Acid.... lol, I know I shouldn't be encouraging you because I don't like what you're doing, but I thought the "big brother" thing is a clever, albeit annoying, way to get people's attention. But come on, doesn't it get bothersome to have to get that in all your posts?

now that's unfair. some people probably don't even know that there's a thread where they vote on whether they want it or not. give it a week, at least. so close next monday, please? if people really want it, the poll won't change by then.

big brother is watching. and broadcasting it to everyone.

it's a rather useless feature, and it disturbs me. it's like in britian... "safe beneath our watchful eyes"

now, i guess i haven't fully explained why i'm against it:

- some people might talk to someone personally, off topic, simply because they're viewing the topic.

- some people don't like it- it's like "your papers please", and thus log on invisible. logging on invisible means that more and more people will appear offline forever. this makes PMing someone about something and knowing you'll get an immediate answer much more complicated.

that being said: observe:

since i first started the "big brother" quotes, there has been a gradual rise in the anonymous user.

i love big brother

well, it gets to be a habit. copy and paste, as well as notepad, helps.

and another reason why not to have this:

zepfel, i think you just voted yes. how'd i know? because you were the only one viewing when the poll number went up.

of course, it could have been someone a few seconds before you who just left, but who knows.

polls aren't truely anonymous anymore.

there is no feasible reason that you have stated to remove the new feature.

i bet that you're not quite so concerned in real life. (loyalty cards, credit cards, mobile phones, cash, house phones, certain consumer items are all trackable. i would be willing to bet you use two-thirds of these, at the least.)

tin foil hats made with points are useless.

the points attract attention, as well as a focusing spot for the GODS (geostationary orbiting detection satillites)

a hat lined with metalic foil is the best way.

IPs are like phone numbers on the internet. The wrong person gets a hold of it and your harddrive is gone.

I like that this feature was added.

I also don't see how it's being "stalkerish."
Grow up and realize that it's nowhere near being stalker-like.

Besides, your username name is available on the main page for all to see.. and in whatever thread you post in.. So showing what thread you're currently reading/posting to should make no difference. It's just one more thing to whine about, when it's not even that big of a deal.

Not completely.

IP's are more like house addresses (in fact, they are an address for your computer). Even if I know your house address, it's not a certainty that I can break into your house and steal all your stuff.

Besides, most people's IP addresses change on a fairly regular basis. This is because most people have dialup (which assigns a new IP address every time you connect), or dynamically-address cable or DSL (which gives you a new IP fairly often as well). Most people do not have a static IP; on the other hand, most businesses and large organizations do, but they've probably taken steps to secure their systems in that case.

Hey, Roxanne--is there any chance that you could/would modify the code so that the function that actually gets or displays the user data really is called big_brother_is_watching();. 'Cause that'd be sweet.

^ read 1984.

anyways, i've managed to convince my parents cB is a harmless site where there's no possiblitiy of me meeting strangers.

a list of the people reading the topic at the bottom doens't much help my case.

so; goodbye cB.

--------------------

(thanks jordan)(ok jordan made the good part then i tacked on the bad part.)

you didn't really think i'd leave cB over something so trivial, did you? i'm leaving because school's starting.
