QUOTE(icy_wonderland @ Jul 20 2005, 7:16 AM) It's stupid to end a perfectly good friendship over something like smoking, and it's definitely not cool to use a threat of ending a relationship as a bargaining chip in any dispute. I think your best bet is to just sit down and talk to her, tell her that smoking is bad for her health, and that it is in her best interest to stop. Just show her that you are concerned for her as a friend, and you're not angry or disappointed in her, but worried about her health. |

threatening to end it is the stupidest idea i've ever heard.
you can never say anything like that until you understand her situation. just like cutting--some people threaten to end the friendship if the friend continues cutting but they have no idea about the release of tension from it. you just can't say anything that biased about something--it's very unfair. so, okay, if she's upset, she smokes. we all do something when we're upset. some people it's cutting, some it's sleeping, some it's crying, and others it's smoking. just ask her to try and limit herself, but don't stop her completely. she'll hate you for it. |

... Let her smoke. It's her effing choice. Stop forcing your opinion on her. You're not being a good friend by not respecting her opinions. If smoking helps her, so be it.

Question: Is that "communicate" in big, bold letters always on your clipboard, or do you have the markup saved as a text file somewhere?

You should save it as a text file so you can just copy/paste.
Or better yet, get the admins to make a PHP function...say, something like "show_communication()" and then you can just include a BB code tag that will call that PHP function... |

I was thinking of just writing a whole thread about communication and begging a mod or someone to pin it. Everytime i say communication it would be huge.

track down some of those old 'smoking is bad' movies and worksheets from old health classes... if she doesnt listen then just let her smoke. just dont say "i told you so" when she gets cancer or something.

you cant really do anything about it, if you have already talked to her about it, and she seems to pay you no mind. maybe you should take a break and stop talkin` to her for a while, and see if she really cares about your friendship she`ll come back to you, or stop smokin`. the outcome may not be what you want it to be, but truth hurts.

If she still doesn't listen after that, leave her alone. She obviusly won't change her opinion because of you if she hasn't after youv'e tried to persuade her many times. You have to let her realize that smoking is bad for her health, aditude, and depression all by herself. She obviously doens't want to listen to anyone else telling her that. |

I hate when some of the people I hang out with smoke...the people who do smoke I don't really talk to them much!!...soOo I wouldn't know about a person you love smoking, but my Mom...& I love her & I want her to stop too...& if the only way yur friend will stop is by stop stressing...do something special for her that'll make her feel relaxed & comfortable..& get her to call a quit smoking hotline or explain to her everything that could happen..Tell her you could die from second-hand smoke too..Ask her how she would feel if she was responsible for your death!!...& if she gets upset about all this tell her your sorry, but you care for her way to much to see her puff away her life like it's nothing...cause it's not nothing it's something to you & you want to be something to her...

but let it be known: smoking is hard habit to break. |

Tell her that smoking kills, and you don't want to see her chances of living a long and happy life go to waste. Then give her some statistics, or better, give her the shock effect. Actually SHOW her pictures of what happens to you when you smoke..
And if it doesn't work, seek help. There are tons of hotlines out there that'll help you. |

im sorry, from my view i can only see two choices
either communicate or threat her but, threating is a really bad idea, she might take it seriously then u lose a friend in the end, u still have to communicate better with her right? i know its hard...just keep trying, dont give up |

i agree with everyone else ......its kinda usless to ask the guy or whatever to quit smoking ....it would either cause the problem to go worse ....or even break your friendship ....and just for smoking ?? .....well i can tell you that one of my best friends smoke ....and were still good friends ....but that doesnt mean i smoke .... i hate smoking ....especially ruining these vocal chords

Well..
1. It's their choice. When they're lying in a hospital bed with cancer say, "Wellll, it was your choice ya know." 2. It she smokes because she has depression.. or she gets "upset".. why are you worrying about her smoking?? Give her better advice and tell her to take some depression medication. Maybe then she might stop smoking because she finds the depression meds make her feel better anyways. I think that should solve it. |

I'm going to tell you what she's proabbly thinking.
I'm in your friends situation. One of my really good friends has been bugging me to quit. I've tried. I really have. It's addicting. I love her to death and would never want us to not be friends. I get irratated when she digs it into my skull that i shouldn't. I'm not retarted. I know what it does to me. I've cut down alot. I think I'm almost to my quitting point. It's taking me almost one year to just smoke like 1/2 times a day. It takes time. Don't threaten her. Don't try and stress her out much. Thats when i start again. When I stress. Some things I would want my friends to say to me is. I just want you to stop. I love you and I don't want somthing bad to happen to you. I'll be there for you no matter what. Not. Stop or our friendship is over. Your stupid for doing that. why do you do that stop. |

tell herhow you feel, but give her time... quitting is gonna be hard so don't pressure her too much. that might make it worse...
as for the intervention idea, those suck. my friends did that to me (but it wasn't about smoking...) and it just caused a relapse... |

i know what you mean, it's hard to watch good friends, at first they just do it to act cool, thinking they can quit whenever they want, but they just keep doing it until they are up to a pack a day, and they can't stop anymore.
I have 3 friends that it has happened to, makes me sad |

Be frankly, if u r one of the smoker. You will know its hard to quit it. Caused I'm smoke too. Well, unless there is something/matter to force her quit (example like get any serious sickness or having child ..), otherwise its very hard to get her quit it.
Take some time on it, maybe she will take your advise. |

QUOTE(chii @ Aug 11 2005, 5:44 AM) Exactly. It's her choice if she wants to die that way. If that's 'helping' her, back off. Okay. I have a friend that smokes as well and he is REALLY close to me. I'm trying hard to make him quit (he's trying harder) by giving him a CD for every month he goes without smoking. I don't care how much that's going to cost me because it matters a lot to me that he's healthy. He also has will to stop smoking for HIMSELF. Maybe you should ask your friend if smoking is what she really wants and try to coax her out of it without threatening her. |

We can't really tell you what to do, or just let her smoke. If she doesn't quit and thinks that smoking can make her have no more pressure or depression, then let her smoke. It's her choice. Whether than, you can either tell her that if smoking is really want she wants.
