There is no "real" size for any layouts. There are various sizes for each different layout and everybody's screen resolution.. I just suggest you sticking with something small, simple, and something that fits on your screen.

you'd want to make your layout a size a cordinance to what your resolution on your computer is.

Most websites are designed to fit on an 800x600 monitor, as that is the lowest most people go these days. Some are designed for 1024x768, because that is the most common.
You also have the option of setting your styles up so they scale proportionally to the monitor size. |
