WOW.
only an hour or so of the 8 hour broadcast of the live 8 concerts all over the world have been shown here and it's already been absolutely amazing. richard ashcroft and coldplay playing bittersweet symphony!?! AHH that was so freaking awesome. it's a great cause. i already have the banner for makepovertyhistory.com which is tied in with the live 8 cause, and my mom said i can order a bracelet for it. if you don't know why the live 8 concerts are going on, it's to ensure that the leaders of the better-off countries who in a few days are going to discuss how much money will be given to the cause will make their money count and give as much as they can to help. some acts that are involved are: coldplay paul mccartney u2 the who pink floyd kanye west destiny's child alicia keys mariah carey audioslave jay-z the killers dave matthews band good charlotte justin timberlake madonna motely crue rob thomas lauryn hill sarah mclachlan kaiser chiefs and many many more. there are 9 stages throughout the world in america, the UK, canda, japan, south africa, france, germany, italy, and russia. discuss! |

Dude, that duet with Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft was fantastic. I like how Coldplay added their little touches without taking away from the Verve-ness of the song. Kanye was really good too. I never knew he had such great stage presence.
I have the makepovertyhistory band on my xanga too, but I really want the ONE bracelet. It says they sell them at the Body Shop stores in the UK, but I wonder if they sell them at the ones in the US. Eh, I can always order the 10-pack online. The whole concept of Live 8 is awesome. While Live Aid was great, I dunno, something about this time around seems like it's better than the other. Edit: OMG, I love "Like A Prayer!!!" |

What sucks about Live 8 is that it is only to raise awareness...not MONEY. The previous Live Aid raised millions of dollars for the cause, but Live 8 only raises awareness? Like starving children in Africa can get food on awareness. And the celebrities get gift baskets? Come on, what is the use of awareness only?

PINK FLOYD! WOOT! They got back together for it. Kick butt groups. woot.
But it's true. Awareness does nothing. Money is something they need. People might send money if they knew it was going to the kids, not the people who are head of it buying these million dollars homes and cars. Eh. Warped soceity. |

I agree with rockstermonkey though. Awareness won't make the children in Africa stop dying. What's the point of snapping your fingers with Will Smith? A child is dying every three seconds and we're wooping it up in Philly, Berlin, London, Paris, Toronto, and Rome. Do most of the people at these concerts really care?

I am pretty sure that Jacques Chirac isn't thinking "ooh! we need to end poverty now!". I think that he is happy that Pink Floyd is reuniting. Do the people who bought the tickets to the show want to know how to end poverty? More likely they just want to see all their favorite bands perform. If lesser known bands came together and played to educate people about poverty, no one would care. |

^ It was a free concert...
And you've just named the reason why they used such big names. If a celeb can use their fame to educate people and potentially save many lives, then Live 8 met its purpose. |

And the people who don't are probally superficial, like people who DO EVERYTHING CELEBRITIES DO! So if the celebrities care about poverty, all those people will because the celebrities do. The same concept was applied to Vote or Die. |

Towards the middle of it, they already had a little over 14million dollars. No joke. |

I went to it today, in Philadelphia. I'm shocked. The music and the cause is just sooo amazing. I'm.. I can't even describe it.
edit. It's just today, for who asked. I saw Kanye live, and I'm so amazed. I saw BEP, DC, and Bon Jovi, too. (I was getting oxygen forced into me during Will Smith). I saw LP and Jay-Z on tv and they looked great, I wish I could've stayed. Damnnnn, I'm just still in awe. This is a great cause. |

Live Aid, the concert 20 years ago, was to raise money. Though money is well and good, it gives the appearance as if the problem has been solved. Money doesn't mean spit if people don't understand that there's a massive problem still out there. Live 8 wasn't a fundraiser, it was for awareness, as others above me have pointed out. Also, like others said, if enough people make their voices heard, then something will have to be done. It'd be irresponsible and an abuse of power of the G8 to not to. |

^Ok, it's not that hard to raise awareness and money at the same time... Also the money doesn't have to go to buying food, it could go for debt relief. Even if it did go to food, it would be more than a days worth or whatever because it wouldn't go to purchasing the food, but to the farmers to improve their farming technique/supplies for better crops.
