Welcome to class today! Today's lesson will be over spelling.

If you don't spell words correctly, people will think you're unintelligent.

Here are some commonly misspelled words on this forum, with the misspellings to the right:

misspelled mispell
where were
our/are are/our
my mah
shit shyt
asian azn
back baq
the letter "o" 0

The right column spellings are incorrect. Do not spell these words that way.

Yes, this lesson is shorter than the other, but these are just words Ms. Kim and I have noticed to be misspelled often.

Don't forget, our test will be on Friday.

Who's is a contraction for "who is," as in "Who's going to the store today?" (It's also less commonly used as a contraction for "who has.")

Whose is possessive, as in "Whose shoe is this?" (Note that it is the possessive form of both "who" and "which.")

Yeah, a lot of people have done that past years through teens. I've done those slangs like
the > dah
what > wut
you > u
your > ur
etc .. I just always find things that I would love but then suddenly change it after awhile. I find it not cool typing like the way , dah , wut , u , ur ..

haha, I just noticed something great. In the links at the bottom, it said spelling for 5-12 year olds....now, now, I think that most of the community on cB is above the age of 12. Therefore, you should know how to spell simple words like:

"the", "some", "why", "your","you"......

You should also know some basic grammar, such as:
The difference between "your" and "you're" and when to use them...

EXAMPLES:
(possesive) Your username is lame. (abbrevation for "you are") You're going to need a new username.

Their, there, and they're and how to use them properly:

EXAMPLES:
(preposition, describes a location, place, or time) There is such a thing as dumb people. You can tell who they are by the looks on (possesive) their faces as they read this post. (abbrevation of "they are") They're totally dumbfounded by what I've said.

Who is a nominative pronoun (i.e. it is a subject), as in "Who is wearing the blue shirt?"

Whom is an objective pronoun (i.e. it is the object of a preposition), as in "With whom are you going to the movies tonight?" (In this case, whom is the object of with.) Note that this makes the common construct "Who are you going to the movies with tonight?" grammatically incorrect (doubly so because it is improper to end a sentence or phrase with a preposition, since prepositions require objects).

A good way to figure out if you should use 'whom' or 'who:'

Take the beginning of the sentence up to where you must place 'whom' or 'who' and place it at the end. Example: "Are you going to the movies tonight with ***?" Then decide whether him/her or he/she fits in the sentence. If it is either him/her, then use whom. If it is either he/she, then use who. Example: "Are you going to the movies tonight with 'him?' You would not say 'with he.' Therefore, the sentence requires a 'whom.'

I love this thread. I am a writer, and misuse of grammar is one of my pet peeves.

It should be your own decision on how to write anything its a free country and using and substituting any word for your own is like making YOUR own layout or picture. you can do anything if you feel like it. people shouldn't change or not change just because you think it's annoying if a person didn't like how you yourself use youre expression you would be like F-off because its how you express yourself. If anyone chooses to use those same chracteristics to post there voice and to show off an example of themselves its there right. im not going on about snotty people talking about somthing they dont undersatnd and dont choose to understand im not making, no ones making anyone do anything they dont wnat to do. i can tawk lyke diz or not so can you. im just saying their is a post about people typing diffrently, so its ok to post about someone or something looking differently or having something different just because you people talking crap dont want to have anything with this.

... she doesn't come off as smart? Hm. That's not the intellectual sort I was referring to.

To me, intellectuals are informed; they speak confidently, knowing what they say is true (at least to them) and are able to back such statements up with credible sources. They should (and do) give off an impression that they are smart, or just even logical.

There's a difference between being academically smart and then being intellectually smart. I hate when people think that people who do well academically are actually really smart. One of the valedictorians of my class is the dumbest shit ever. I don't consider her smart, not in the least, even though she has the 4.0.

I myself have been called smart on account of grades and such, but I'm really not. Hell, I got a D in math this year. The thing is, though, grades are never really fair. People cheat all the time to get ahead, so how do you know if they're truly "smart" or not? Teachers grade with different levels of difficulty, so how can you judge if someone is smart or not by their grades? Then there are those with real potential, that really are smart. Some of the most intelligent people I've ever talked to have failed classes. Because they didn't try in school. Grades and school are no way to guage one's level of intelligence. You have to watch the way they hold themselves and how they speak.

Despite the grades though, I am confident in what I say, I stick with what I say, I defend it, and (ha, in case you couldn't tell) I'm clearly an elitist, so I guess I consider myself an intellect to some degree, especially when compared to a lot of cB members. Anyway. This is way off topic now and I digress. Yay for English lessons.

c'mon saying "sorry" is manners, and i don't like when people pretend they don't know how to spell. they act all ditzy saying "ohh really i thought it was sorrie"

If you want to type like that, no one will stop you but that doesn't mean we have to like that kind of writing. You don't have to stop but others don't have to not tell you to stop. You understand? You can type how you want, we can complain however we want about your typing. Works both ways, see?

Because, you know, the way to express yourself is to invent your own grammar and spelling rules so that no one else can understand you.

Go ahead and express yourself on a resume then. Absolutely use the easy way to write. Then use the slang during an interview.

Actually... it was something to be added to your sarcasm. Not really in response to you. Maybe I should have clarified that. Your sarcasm was most obvious, of course.

I beg to differ. A games tester is someone that must provide feedback. If a person seems petty, they most likely wont hire. They do not need people that will just say: "OH MAN! It is just so awesome... the colors... whoooo!" They want professional feedback, and require technical problems to be discovered.

Wouldn't they want a tester to go for something a general audience (or game player) would feel? Not for something professional.

i read an article on it in time magazine...

i think what they want is to see if the gameplay is ok. the game programmers can easily detect teh technical problems. but they designed the game, they know how to beat it, so they can't really play it.

umm, alot of those are on purpose tho...this wasn't on the list but such as "tho", sure you should spell it "though" but umm, i'm too lazy to type three more keys? ya good excuse

still, alot of those arn't spelling mistakes, they are shortened versions of the words that people use on purpose. Like azn, mah, and shyt. they use it cause they think it looks cool or something I donno. but I'm pretty sure they know that's not technically how it's spelt, and if they don't than well... laugh.gif  enough said.
why? Unless you find someone writting like that on an english paper why should you care? It's a forum on the internet, who cares if ppl want to abriviate some of their words to make it "easier" for them?  stubborn.gif

People who get all upadee about this kinda stuff annoys me. Just cool down and don't take it seriusly, if you don't like the way they write, just ignore it. It won't kill you.
I agree  mellow.gif just by telling somone that spells "asian", "azn" that they are spelling it wrong won't make any difference. they already KNOW they are spelling it wrong. They are spelling it wonrg ON PURPOSE. It's "internet slang" and hint hint, guess where we are? ON THE INTERNET  rolleyes.gif

I think realizing the difference between "are/our" is a very useful, and helpful topic. This can be carried into writting things besides on the internet, and people who use those incorrectly do not realize they are doing so. I think you should have more things like that, rather than things that ppl spell wrong on purpose.

Just my opinion. I can be wrong, and lame, so please don't put me on your enemy list  wink.gif  where ever that might be.

the > dah
what > wut
you > u
your > ur
etc .. I just always find things that I would love but then suddenly change it after awhile. I find it not cool typing like the way , dah , wut , u , ur ..

It was nice, but sometimes people accidently spell things wrong. For example, they are typing really quick, so the letters just become all mis-placed in the word. I am sure you can guess when they write something wrong on accident, or on purpose.

For example:

QUOTE
I thought your favorite number was 1, adn 2!!  You are so confusing!

^Did you notice the, "adn"? I am sure they know how to spell, "and", just a mistake.

Here is something people write on purpose:

QUOTE
iduno...wut do u think?"

iduno=purpose
wut=purpose
u=purpose

Again, this is the internet, sometimes you might not know if they write it on accident, or on purpose, but when they re-write it the same way over and over, it becomes obvious.

Just wanted to clairfy that, because on my old screename, i wrote, 'teh(the)', and someone started bashing me.

Exactly! That's why I have this great idea for an invention: a keyboard with a delete key! With my keyboard, you'll be able to correct those typos in a flash! I just need a rich venture capitalist to fund my startup.

Well, some people don't re-read their post, so the usually edit the mistake later on when people point it out.

We can understand slang, but it is a lot easier to read English.
