dntel is a lot like the postal service, seeing as it's the other guy's main band (by other guy i mean not ben gibbard.. jimmy ti--something). i've been listening to a lot of the elected recently too, i guess they're indie. and i absolutely love her space holiday... "the young machines" is one of those cds that never gets old (they're kind of like the postal service + strings + a more whispy and less annoying version of conor oberst's voice).

If you liked the new pornographers, you should like one of the band member's albums. It was by A.C. Newman, entitled "The Slow Wonder". A couple of good tracks from there are "Miracle Drug" and "On The Table". Did you know there is a new pornographers album coming out soon? You learn something new everyday...

Wasn't there a post similar to this a few days ago??? Oh well, I'll just leave my humble markings on this one as well... happy.gif

If you like The Postal Service, Modest Mouse, and Radiohead, check this band out.
Namlessnumberheadman or Namelessnumberheadman Stream Site They are freakin' awesome. My boyfriend is really good friends with the drummer. This band deserves any attention they get they are truly, truly talented.

These guys sound like The Cure. They are definately worth checking out...VHS Or Beta. They have kick ass little stream radio on their main page where you can stream their whole album.

Don't forget Jawbreaker. These guys started what we call emo today. They remind me a bit of Alkaline Trio but overall their sound is their own. Great band.

Who else??? Can't forget Death From Above 1979. These guys also kick major ass.

Also there's Bloc Party...not great, but pretty good.

Also, if you're into female vocals or goth music at all, try checking out these bands: MorissonPoe and 33degree

Enjoy!

PS- The Smiths rock my socks. So do The Sisters of Mercy, Gary Numan, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, XTC and tons of other 80's alternative/gothic bands.

ahh, i love a lot of these bands, but i'm too lazy to bold them... you can look at my myspace if you want to see. this also reminded me, i haven't listened to the spill canvas forever! i bought their cd.. gosh, almost over a year ago, and i even made a buddy icon for their official site (which used to be in the media section.. but last time i checked it's just a recording journal). then a couple months ago i gave their cd to one of my friends, and a bunch of people looked at it and now they claim they're such huge fans. asswipes.

and nicki, this is actually really funny, because i'm having a rave at my house for graduation (not a real rave, it's all one big inside joke) and last night i made the playlist for it at midnight, and i was looking at it right now, and it turns out i put some q and not u on it! haha, i was like "wait... this is not raving music!". oh well, i guess it's dancable.

and everyone needs to go download "an owl with knees" by the books. freakin' perfection. the last part with the strings is so intense.

I have to second The Pixies, they're such an awesome band, and have influenced a lot of indie/alternative rock. It's a shame they were just a few years ahead of their time; else I think they could've been a lot bigger, at least in the early 1990's. But if you're looking for good indie/alternative rock, The Pixies are awesome. So awesome that they even reformed and went on a tour last year. I had hoped for years they would do that, and then they finally did, and I couldn't go. Drat the luck.

I think that if we're going to talk old school bands, then someone ought to have brought up bands like Richard Hell and The Voidoids, Blondie, X, Television, Talking Heads, Suicide, New York Dolls, Big Black, Nico, The Heartbreakers, MC5, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, T. Rex, Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, Generation X, Hawkwind, Rocket From The Tombs, The Buzzcocks, The Descendents, Mission Of Burma, The Undertones, The Cure, The Damned, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Guided By Voices, Butthole Surfers, Husker Du......this list could go on forever....

All of those bands started the whole indie punk/new wave scene...without them, today's alternative scene would not exist. These bands made it ok to sing about what you saw and felt, ok to rebel against the way things are done. These bands made music what it is today. They taught people that the music you listen to doesn't have to be manufactured to perfection....Music can be just what you want it to be and it can be a good time.....Anyway, the list above is just to give those who are interested in seeing where it all started a taste of the beginning. I have listened to all of these bands and am quite a large fan of some of them. Just in case you're getting bored with what's currently out there.....

Also a heads up to all of you Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan fans out there:

Just a few bands to def. look itno are Broken Social Scene, Andrew Bird, Chicks on Speed, Cut Copy[/B] , Death cab for Cuties (not sure if anyone has suggested this on, but it's one of the mebers on the Postal Service's band), Destroyer (one of the members on the New Pornographers's band), French Kicks, Iron and Wine, Ladytron, Kings of Leon, Phoenix, Radio 4 (if you like more technoy stuff), Reeve Oliver, Scissor Sister (if you like Elctric Six), Sondre Lerche,The Walkmen, and I'm asuming someone said the Yeah Yeah Yeah, but i didnt see it in your list.
I was just running through my Ipod really quick to list a few. If you have never heard Chicks on Speed def download "Fashion Rules" , "Culture Vulture", and "Electroclah Girl". Cut Copy is very technoy, but they are really good. Should try and Download "Saturdays" and "That was Just a Dream". Im a super big fan of Ted Leo and you should check out the Ipod exlusives of "Six Months In a Leaky Boat" and the remake of the stiff little fingers song "Suspect Device". Hope that helps.

I'm not sure why you could only get 3 Chicks on speed songs off limewire. I got about 16. You should def download limewire pro off lime wire. It will make downloading things that much faster and easier while not costing you 20 dollars. I found it kinda funny when a friend told me to do this cause I'm using there own program to get there adavnced software for free. Oh well. Another band i forgot to say is the dead 60's. I just heard about them yesterday. They are not bad at all. Also Dogs Die in Hot Cars is worth checking out , as is Badly Drawn Boy.

I cant believe i forgot the Futureheads and Shout Out Louds. Also, for some older stuff look into the Stiff Little Fingers and The Beta Band.

i love dogs die in hot cars, even though some of their music is kind of cheesy (like the intro to godhopping).

belle and sebastian are decent, as are hint hint.

Why does this seem like a regurgitated "Do you listen to underground.." thread?

Because it is....but alas, it will never die. People always wanna know about "underground" stuff so they can stay cool....or just have some new stuff to listen to....

because sammi asked for indie bands, and as you said in version one of that topic:

it all depends on demographics to be completely honest, when talking about "underground" music. Technically this should be "indie" music, but whaatev.

i don't really think this thread is necessary, but she also asked for new wave and alternative bands (even though they're not being discussed as much..) so eh.

uhh...do you know what indie/alternative/new wave means?...

and i didn't mean for it to turn into a regurgitated thread..most of the bands being mentioned in the underground thread were more emoish..and i wanted some bands somewhat similar to ted leo, new pornographers, beulah..

but i guess it's turning into the underground thread, so i'll close it.
