Fellow cBers,
James (MarchHare2UrAlice), Ruth (Suddenly She), Basick, and I are going to start a sort of cB newspaper. At the moment, we have only simple plans, such as interviewing members and writing cB related articles, but we hope to expand the project with your help. This is a way for you to become more involved with cB in a positive way, other members will surely appreciate your contribution, and you'll be getting extra writing practice. ![]() The "paper" will be posted in the Writing forum. As you all know, the Writing forum is often overlooked and this is one of the ways we hope to bring more attention to it. I know we have many talented writers in cB and I hope you all will consider joining our team! This is only for fun and you will not be an official moderator or anything of the like. Please do not confuse this is a cB hiring thread. If you're interested, please fill out this application and post it in this thread. QUOTE Createblog Newspaper Staff Application All required fields are bolded. If it’s not… we’re probably just curious. Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics: Find the flaws and correct them. Be supportive of the writer/author Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience Oversee the layout of each "paper" Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really reporter material? Runner Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really runner material? Find at least two intriguing/inspiring photos (NOT from funnysomething.com) and at least two humorous quotes/jokes. They need not match. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him. After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.” “Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine You can make anything your write on the application cB related for now. |

Name: Brie.
Age: 13, but I'll be 14 in July. Mark Position Interested In: If more than one, please rank from 1 (most interested) to 3 (least interested). _Editor: Looks over submitted articles for accuracy, spelling, grammar, and appropriateness. -- Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. Well, as for experience... I've submitted a few articles to our school newspaper. Not that that really has to do much with editing, but I've had some experience with newspapers. I've also done work with this Latin club newsletter that comes out every month. I'm going to be taking Journalism next year and I am interested in writing and editing. Hm... Also, I always like to do extra credit writings in English class and such. I just love to write and read and things like that.. I always have. -- Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? -- This sounds really exciting. I've never seen anything like this on any other message board. A very unique idea and I would love to be involved! I'm a big fan of writing and editing, so I really would enjoy this. I'm on here quite a bit, so I could get a lot done. This just sounds really exciting and interesting. What makes you deserve this position? -- Well, I have had some experience and I will be taking a Journalism class next year, which is a direct link to my school's newspaper, so I'll be experiencing even more in my ninth grade year. Also, I'm enthusiastic about it. I think this sounds really neat, and I'd love to be part of it. What can you bring to the team? -- I'm a hard-working person. I like to try and get things done right the first time. So I can bring a hard-working and fairly accurate person to the team. Don't forget enthusiastic. :] -- Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics: Find the flaws and correct them. -- I do that a lot. Even in my everyday life, I try to fix problems/flaws, whether they deal with grammar, spelling, or just any other everyday problem. I don't like seeing things that are considered complete go by when they actually should have been edited. Be supportive of the writer/author -- Of course! Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism -- Yes, I prefer to give ideas rather than criticising. Maybe I'll deal out a little constructive criticism in-between the ideas, but I don't just flat-out criticise people. Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience -- Yep! I like to try and see what I can do to make writing as appealing as possible, but still with the original meanings, ideas, messages, etc. Oversee the layout of each "paper" -- Of course! I'm obsessed with organization. It must be organized and readable. So, I say yes. Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work -- DEFINITELY! I always do that. Sometimes my friends ask me to re-read their essays and stories and such for class, and I always end up going back and helping them edit things to improve how readable and organized their paper is. I always try and get things as close to perfect as possible. -- Thanks for taking the time to read my application! This sounds so fun. ![]() |

Name: Heather
Age: 17 Mark Position Interested In: _Reporter: Finds topics and writes articles. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. Indicate experience - Well i write ALOT. Planning on publishing a poetry book some time soon, i've written articles for the Trinity Mother Frances news paper here in tyler too. Letter of Intent I'd like to be a reporter on this staff because its always been an option for me in life to do some thing along these lines :P be it big-time news or cb news. And i really love the feeling of having my work read by the public...its very self-satisfying and inspirational for further writings. I think I have good writing skills and the right amount of spunk to keep my writings interesting and exciting. “The CreateBlog Revolution” The CB Revolution, forum renown (although in some cases looked down upon) as of late April quickly became a home to avid confrontation, debate, and compromise. This revolution was not just another cute topic, or joke, at the time; it has claimed to be a reform movement with a main goal of making CreateBlog a better place for its members. The capital topic of this “revolution” had been discussed after, and partially before, the new mod selection was announced to the public. Accusable thoughts were definitely on some reader’s minds, such as to the real motives and reasoning behind the supporters of the Cb Revolution, and the thoughts of the CB Revolutionists directed towards those in higher powers. The Demands of The CB Revolution Thread - The addition of a suggestions forum - Having each forum have is own mod that will read and check every topic in that forum - The “reformation” of the Mod system; namely, a better system for denoting verbal warnings - The informing of members about changes, if it affects the member directly. In my own personal opinion, I feel as if this “revolution” has brought more of a voice to CreateBlog’s regular and official members, seeing as a suggestions forum has been placed on the Forums Index page that is open for us all, as a whole, to suggest and post in. To experience the revolution first hand visit the main source of his article The CB Revolution i set the size to 12 o_o..but that was really big so im going to leave it at default. grr, it was hard to keep it at just halff a page !_! any way..haha i tried! |

I'm sorry if it's a bit lenghty..
Createblog Newspaper Staff Application Name: Kim Age: 13 but 14 in 13 days (That's a week and six days!) Mark Position Interested In: 3 Editor: Looks over submitted articles for accuracy, spelling, grammar, and appropriateness. 2 Reporter: Finds topics and writes articles. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. 1 Runner: Finds photos and humorous writings. Will write captions when necessary. Must give credit. Indicate experience I was in the Italian newspaper but never actually got enough time to finish an article (yeah .. the problem was that there wasn't any recent Italian news so .. it was either quit or make - up one.) Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? Ah, I have always wanted to be part of a newspaper (see I have been looking for Ezines hiring staff but well .. I can't find any e-zines I'd like to be a part of.) What makes you deserve this position? I deserve the position of runner because for one thing, I'm a funny person. Well .. not intentionally but when I do try to say something funny no one laughs and when I do say something not funny, everyone laughs. It's ironic but .... Yeah it's just ironic. What can you bring to the team? Pizzas! No... I don't know how to spell the word (that's one point off, isn't it?) Well .. I think it's pizzaz. But I don't know. I bring life! I have humor of all kinds: twisted, slapstick, family, teen, kid, etc! (I bet you didn't know there were all these types of humor things but there is!) Runner Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really runner material? (Is this a rhetorical question?) These are all my pictures actually: ![]() ![]() ^ If you ignore the words, I like the apple fighting! :P 1. xanga.com/flashfiction: INT. CLASSROOM -- MORNING A female TEACHER (28) lectures to a class full of HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. PERCY (16) sits in the front row, listening aptly. TEACHER So since we have a little time left we’ll pick up our discussion of the presidents. Does anyone remember where we left off yesterday? Percy raises his hand instantly. TEACHER (CONT’D) Yes, Percy. PERCY We just finished Harding TEACHER Okay, well we can probably get through some of the next one, which is... (she opens a book) Okay, Calvin Coolidge. You know, my grandfather used to tell a funny story about Coolidge. This isn’t in your book, but... The class moves as one to open their notebooks and prepares to write. TEACHER (CONT’D) You don’t need to write this down; it’s probably not even true. It’s just kind of funny, I think. The class relaxes with the exception of Percy, who continues to open his notebook and uncap his pen diligently. TEACHER (CONT’D) Some of you may have heard before that they used to call Calvin Coolidge “Silent Cal,” because he... She trails off, noticing that Percy has been writing down word-for-word what she says. TEACHER (CONT’D) Percy, you don’t have to write this down. It’s just a joke - it won’t be on the test. PERCY Okay. He makes no move to cap his pen or close the notebook. The teacher stares at him for a moment before continuing. TEACHER Well anyway, they called him “Silent Cal,” because he was known for – Percy, you don’t have to write this down. Percy looks up guiltily from his shorthand. PERCY Sorry. Beat. TEACHER Why don’t you go ahead and put the cap back on that pen? Percy caps his pen. Beat. TEACHER (CONT’D) Well, so he didn’t say much, is the point of the nickname. And the story goes that... There is a telltale click from Percy’s pen cap coming off. He looks up with eyes wide. The teacher smacks the pen out of his hand without missing a beat. TEACHER (CONT’D) ...there was a banquet at the White House, and this woman is sitting next to Coolidge and he hasn’t said anything throughout the entire dinner... Percy has found a pencil and is still writing as the teacher talks. Again without losing a beat, she smacks the pencil from his hand and snatches the notebook, which she flings across the room. TEACHER (CONT’D) ...and so finally she looks over at him and says, “Mr. President, I was talking with my husband earlier when I found out I was going to sit next to you and” – PERCY! Percy has found another pencil and is writing on a small notepad. TEACHER (CONT’D) You really don’t have to write this down! She grabs the notepad and rips out the page he has written on, then crumples it up and bounces it off of his face. TEACHER (CONT’D) (composing herself) Anyway. She says, “My husband bet me $20 that I could get you to say more than two words.” And so Coolidge... She trails off as a strange tapping sound begins to compete with her speaking. She looks over to see Percy writing with a third pencil on the surface of the desk. She SCREAMS and tackles him out of his desk. Percy struggles to crawl away from her, but she grabs him around the knees and drags him down again. The bell rings. -- 2 . "Forget about falling in love, how about falling in a vat of chocolate?!" - Anonymous Example of humorous bit: Mortified doesn’t describe how Jane’s parents felt after meeting her boyfriend. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him. After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.” “Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine ^ Hahaha. Jane takes that the 500 hours of community service as like he's a nice guy - and he volunteers his time at that but really, he's doing 500 hours of community service because probably of a crime or something. |

QUOTE(DavidJ2318 @ May 22 2005, 8:35 PM) is this an official cB thing? is it like authorized by them? if not, then would this be considered advertising? ![]() Allow me to answer since I was the one to begin the thread. Firstly, the initial post should have given you a very clear answer. QUOTE(uninspiredfae @ May 20 2005, 10:28 PM) This is only for fun and you will not be an official moderator or anything of the like. Please do not confuse this is a cB hiring thread. It's nothing official, but it's for fun. Secondly, the ONLY thing this thread is meant to advertise is the writing forum, which goes unnoticed by the majority of cB. Our writings will be posted in the Writing forum. It is only authorized by the effort of those who would like to see members involve themselves in a positive, non-spamming manner. I do not understand how this would be advertising. Perhaps, you can explain it to me now that I've explained myself to you. |

Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. 2: Editor: Looks over submitted articles for accuracy, spelling, grammar, and appropriateness. Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Find the flaws and correct them: Of course! I'm a very detailed person. I edited my post about a kajillion times just to get it right. Be supportive of the writer/author: Will do! Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism: Absolutely. I frequently post in the Writing forum, and I like to help out cB writers and encourage them. Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience: Accept! Oversee the layout of each "paper.": Accept! Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work: YES! I am extra-particular about grammar and the way other people write. Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. Reporter: I love to write. I'm extremely active in the Writing forum, and I have no intention of ignoring it. I've been writing for fun for an extremely long time now, and I would love to be a journalist someday. Editor: I love working with people, and giving ideas and constructive critisicm is a huge way for me to interact with others. Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. I'd like to be a staff member because I really like cB. I always visit the forums whenever I get on the Internet, and I try my best to make my posts interesting and thoughtful. Like I've mentioned before, journalism is something that I'd love to do someday. Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” n00bs-A Blessing or a Curse? Lately, in the cB community, there have been many newcomers, or n00bs, as they are often reffered to as. Many veteran members have had complaints against these "n00bs," as they are often referred to, many times accussing them of double posting and spamming. Says one user, "As you accumulate more posts, you gain more respect from [the]members. If you're a newbie that double posts, no one knows... you could've signed up strictly for spamming." There are those, however, who are not necessarily taking sides on this issue. Another user proclaims, "... I can spam this board to death but doubt everyone will respect me ;)." As for the n00bs, well, I guess they're just going to have to learn about the edit button, increase their post counts and tread carefully in the name of grammar. |

All required fields are bolded. If it’s not… we’re probably just curious. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. 3Runner: Finds photos and humorous writings. Will write captions when necessary. Must give credit. Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. Letter of Intent Well, I'm jumping the gun here, but if appointed an editor, that would be the appropriate position for me, seeing how I was chief editor of the 2003/2004, and 2004/2005 yearbooks, co-editor of the 2003/2004 school periodical, and chief editor of the 2004/2005 edition, as well as the editorial cartoonist. That should be a testament to my anal nature concerning journalistic perfection. Editor-wise, I bring experience, and quite frankly, anal retentiveness. Reporter-wise, I'd say I'm well fit for the job. Without tooting my horn too excessively, I'm a good writer. That's just about all there is to it. In a nutshell, as a reporter I would simply bring raw writing skill. Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics: [A]Find the flaws and correct them. [A]Be supportive of the writer/author [A]Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism [A]Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience [A]Oversee the layout of each "paper" [A]Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work To reject any of these responsibilities would be to forfeit my former high school position. Therefore, why would the same not apply to cB's periodical? Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” (I'd really much prefer just to write, though I can contribute editorial experience). Parole System Outlives Its Utility In 1966, three teenagers were taken from their car, beaten brutally, and murdered. The perpetrator's name was Kenneth Allen McDuff, now dubbed Texas' most notorious criminal. For weeks, McDuff evaded police, until finally in late '66, he was brought to justice. Sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole, McDuff was doomed to a life consisting of aphorisms; 'rotting in jail', 'doing time', and 'jail baiting' it. However, due to a sentencing law change, McDuff became eligible for parole, and, in 1991, was released. The very same month, McDuff went on a killing spree that claimed the lives of six innocent women in two weeks' time. Executed in the late 90's, McDuff serves as a lasting example of the ill effects of the United States' generous 'second chance'. Happy choosing. Working on a staff with Fae is reason enough to apply. |

Name: Brittany Age: 15 Positions Interested In: 2-Editor: Extremely meticulous when looking over works. I cannot stand bad uses of spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. 1-Reporter: I am a reporter for my school newspaper and contributes numerous articles. I have plenty of articles if anyone is interrested in viewing. 3-Runner: Exceptionally good at photography and using resources to find photos and facts, yet not specifically interrested in this position. Letter of Intent I have been writing since a very young age. Journalism has sparked a passion for writing. I am expreienced in writing for a prestigious high school newspaper. This outlet has provided me with expression through writing inquisitive pieces. I am also ready for any challenges the position puts me through. I am very adaptive and gifted at changing problems into positive outcomes. Editor Applicant’s “Audition” [Accept]Find the flaws and correct them. [Accept]Be supportive of the writer/author. [Accept]Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism. [Accept]Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience. [Accept]Oversee the layout of each "paper." [Accept]Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work. ------>All of these are important jobs for an editor. I would uphold all of these responsibilities. Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” This is a condensed version of an article I wrote for the online edition of our newspaper. Our High School is 'Kite Runner' crazy It seems "The Kite Runner" has swept over the sophomore curriculum of our high school. From assemblies to classrooms, this Read Across Rhode Island book has taken over the English department. Ms. Julie Bisbano organized one part of the first assembly for the sophomore class and presented a PowerPoint presentation. Also during that assembly, English teacher Ms. Derektor arranged for a professional dancer to show the sophomores traditional Afghan dancing. Even some brave students joined her on stage for a step-by-step instruction on her dancing techniques. For the second assembly, the high school's sophomores were connected via television along with other schools across Rhode Island for a interview with the author and a short questionnaire. Ms. Bisbano comments on the assembly. "I feel that the forum lent itself to people being rude." Sophomore Kimberly -------- says she may have an explanation as to why the sophomore class was a little too rowdy. "They took about 25 minutes to hook up the equipment so we could watch live. We had to sit and watch random people come on and off the screen...I am sorry for the few people being rude and talking during the author's time on-screen." Although there were students talking, the discussion with the author was a success and provided the students with a better understanding of the novel. |

no priority is being given to any memebers on any basis other than corectly filling out the applications.
as far as announcing the staff, it will be done (i think, we havent solidified this yet) by a post in this thread. PMing the applicants would take a while, and im rather lazy, so that idea is out the window Ruth, im going to Pm you the list which fae and I have compiled so far... |

I am interested in becoming a staff member because My career goal is to be a journalist and I think this will give me the experience necessary to achieve my goal. What makes you deserve this position? I have experience in being a reporter since I worked for my Highschools newsletter for 3 years now What can you bring to the team? I can bring humor and Fun to the team as well as constructive criticsm . If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic. Sex Braclets Whats the deal? Since the 50's teenagers have been rebelling against societies ideals and morals, by drinking, smoking, doing drugs but now there is a new way to achieve their goal- Sex Braclets. Teenagers live by them and Parents cant stand them. But what are they? Are they just a new fashion hitting the streets of New York or are they really promoters of sexual intercourse. The reporters of CB hit the streets to find out what infact are these Braclets. We interviewed 16 year old Rita and asked her what her pink braclet meant, " the pink [braclet] means that a girl has to flash [her breast]". We then asked her if she had ever flashed while wearing the braclet " no we dont do any of what the braclet "says" its just cool to wear". So should parents be worried about these "sex" braclets or is it just a phase, we cant tell you that but all we can say is that the braclets have been selling like hot cakes in many cities around America and it looks like theyll be here for a while. |

All required fields are bolded. If it’s not… we’re probably just curious. Name: Jane Age: 13 (this july) Mark Position Interested In: Reporter If more than one, please rank from 1 (most interested) to 3 (least interested). _Editor: Looks over submitted articles for accuracy, spelling, grammar, and appropriateness. _Reporter: Finds topics and writes articles. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. _Runner: Finds photos and humorous writings. Will write captions when necessary. Must give credit. Indicate experience – In Ela, I am the best story weavers and peot. Along with one of the best ELA test scores in my whole school. Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. I am interested in becoming a staff member because I love writing stories. Sometimes my mind can wonder off and able myself to write stories, whether it's horror or just pure fantasy. I also have PSP which can expand my stories and make creative sensory details that go along with my story/poem as well. Perhaps if I become apart of the team, we will each learn something from each other. This kind of thing is great for me in the future when I proceed to high school. Write a short (quarter page to half page OR 6-8 sentences) story on a topic of your choice. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic.I was always someone who had a wild imagination. Whether it's create peoms, stories, and even skits at times. In my ELA class, we are working on a children's book. And my topic is on a little short story which is really a peom about a mouse and a glass apple. And I love weaving stories and poem depending on the things I see or how I feel. I get my inspiration from most books I read such as Cirque Du Freak, The Stranger, Harry Potter, and The Series of Unfortunate events. This is why I think I should be one of the reporters for the createblog team. Thank you for your time in reading my applicant. Runner Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really runner material? Find at least two intriguing/inspiring photos (NOT from funnysomething.com) and at least two humorous quotes/jokes. They need not match. Write a caption if necessary. Give credit. Example of humorous bit: Mortified doesn’t describe how Jane’s parents felt after meeting her boyfriend. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him. After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.” “Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine |

Name: Sammi Age: 15 Mark Position Interested In: If more than one, please rank from 1 (most interested) to 3 (least interested). _Reporter: Finds topics and writes articles. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. i worked on my school's newspaper at the times we had one..(it keeps stopping and starting up again, it's a strange thing) and uh..yea. that's..about it. and i took a journalism class at school. Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. i am interested in becoming a staff member because i've always been interested in journalism and reporting. createblog is something i'm very passionate about and reporting on happenings here at cb would probably be a great thing for me to help out with. i've been with cb for a long time and i think i can bring some long-term cb experience to the team. i may only be 15, but i think i'm pretty well-rounded for my age. i have a lot of differing interests and i could bring in things that many members may not have heard of and may end up being interested in themselves. i can appeal to both younger and older members, since i know what it's like to be younger than most of those around you and i understand the older person's way of mind. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic. Focusing on Looks and Appearances: Is it Damaging to Teens?
It seems that more and more, teens are focusing on what they and others look like. They focus more on how a majority of people dress, do their hair, speak, etc. to find their way. There is much more of a need to "fit in" with a group of people around you. However, does this damage a teen's self-esteem? Looking to others for how to live your life is not always the best. You may feel a need to fit in, but having individuality and being yourself is what draws people to your personality and to being friends with you, not what brand of clothes you wear. Looking like a perfectly manufactured Barbie doll seems to be a trend these days. More and more teens are actually getting plastic surgery to fulfill their dreams of being just like everyone else and having all the physical attributes that their significant others would want. Looking at life as being manufactured isn't the way to happiness. People seem to be much better off with just being happy with how they are. |

Can we still apply for this? It sounds like fun.
Createblog Newspaper Staff Application Name: Michael Age: 19 Mark Position Interested In: If more than one, please rank from 1 (most interested) to 3 (least interested). X Reporter: Finds topics and writes articles. Will occasionally find graphics in order to add visuals to a story. Must give credit for graphics. Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience. - Entertainment writer/news layout editor for Bucknell University's newspaper, The Bucknellian. - Layout editor/columnist for high school newspaper - Editor-in-Chief of middle school newspaper - Editor-in-Chief of elementary school newspaper (okay, not particularly worthy, but an interesting note) Letter of Intent Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. I've long enjoyed writing, and am especially interested in journalism (particularly op-ed). I've long been involved with various student publications and feel that it would be great to help with the cB newspaper, as well as bring more attention to the writing forum. I'm a (somewhat) accomplished short story writer, as well as columnist for various newspapers, and I've always enjoyed writing quite a bit. I feel I could bring a fresh, honest perspective to the cB newspaper. Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really reporter material? Write a short (quarter page to half page OR 6-8 sentences) story on a topic of your choice. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic. Here's a short piece I wrote as a review for Kings of Leon's new album: Kings of Leon brings fresh sound to rock Lately I've been weary of modern rock music, which seems to only reward those who are good at mimicking other earth-shattering bands. With a lot of bands sounding like clone copies of one another, I was a bit apprehensive when I first listened to Kings of Leon's just-released second album "Aha Shake Heartbreak." My apprehension was completely unwarranted. Kings of Leon turned out to be one of the best new bands I've heard in quite a long time. They have an uncanny knack of seemingly combining elements of many classic bands into a brand-new sound. Listening to this album, I was able to pick out pieces of The Strokes and The Vines in the guitar riffs, the melodic rock leads of Modest Mouse, the spunk and fast pace of The Toadies, and even the fun and humor of The Presidents of the United States of America. Of course, I hesitate to even list these "sources," as I wouldn't want one to get the idea that Kings of Leon are just ripping off the best parts of contemporary rock hits. It's clear to me that many of these bands are most likely not influences of Kings of Leon, even though I quickly noted some resemblance to parts of their music. No, Kings of Leon clearly deserves more credit than that; they are an original band with a new and unique sound, even though their music relates easily to that of other musicians. They not only have excellent rhythm guitar riffs, but unique lead guitar and bass lines that combine with toe-tapping lyrics to shape the overall sound into something that isn't often heard in modern rock music. One of the greatest things about Kings of Leon is the diversity of their music. "Razz," for example, features a light, melodic bass intro coupled with a clean, melodic lead guitar riff that could almost be described as whimsical. "King of the Rodeo," the album's second track, features the rhythmic vocals of Caleb Followill telling the listener to "Let the good times roll / Let the good times roll." Soft acoustic guitar strumming of "Day Old Blues" sets a melancholic yet relaxing tone. "Aha Shake Heartbreak" is an album that manages to deliver a wide range of music that still manages to tie together into a single defining style. Overall the record has a very melodic, relaxing feel that at times seems to invoke ideas of the 1970s or early 80s, yet still falls into the category of traditional rock music. While unique, the album is not so revolutionary that the listener won't be able to recognize it as music they know and love. The only downside I can find in Kings of Leon's music is that the lead singer's voice is almost as annoying as Billy Corgan's, but like the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, somehow that voice moves from annoying to pleasantly unique in the context of the rest of the band's music. I highly recommend that anyone interested in a unique band with a new sound not easily copied by other bands check out Kings of Leon's album "Aha Shake Hearbreak." I can assure you that any fan of modern rock will not be disappointed by this southern rock band. |

I thought being able to practice my writing skills && really put them up for more challenges would be a great way to contribute to CB, hey, I'm helping Cb && having fun, right? I love to write && it has always flowed naturally to me, more natural than algebra, that's for sure. This whole impression to me is a euphoric && amazing oppurtunity to get to know Cb && its Cbers to a higher extent. What makes you deserve this position? I've always felt that writing came easily to me && I would never have to struggle in it, not unless I wanted to hone my skills. I also enjoy writing, so that's just another bonus for me. I've practiced much writing over the years, from persuasive essays to just entertaining short stories, I'm quite adaptable if the situation calls for such. What can you bring to the team? I can bring a wide variety of new concepts to contribute to the team's ever budding collection of ideas already. I'm not here just to have fun, I'm glad to help out anyone else whatever job it might be. Social, crazy, && never dull, those are just a few traits I carry. There will never be a single dull moment when for any of us with all the wonderful minds and personalities that are brought together. I hope to make everyone's experience working with me pleasureable && easy. If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify. Write a caption if necessary. Give credit. Example of humorous bit: Mortified doesn’t describe how Jane’s parents felt after meeting her boyfriend. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him. After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.” “Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine QUOTE Changes are Ready to Be Made Our whole existence we have strived to create equality for ourselves and future generations in the U.S, but still homosexuals of both genders are discriminated and harassed because of their sexual orientation. I for one am all for homosexual relationships and think gays and lesbians should receive more rights. I believe it’s cruel when others discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation or anything else for that matter. We should attempt to tolerate others. Enough time has passed, and I know changes are ready to be made. I understand completely why others may frown upon homosexuality, but being U.S citizens we have a right to express ourselves. I have compiled facts to increase your knowledge on this issue. In several states, lawyers are battling to legalize marriage for homosexual couples. New Jersey, New York, and California are just a few. A judge has recently turned down the request to ban same sex marriages, but the case is to be reviewed by a higher judge. Obviously, a change is already underway. Over the years, different states have legalized laws for the protection of gays and lesbians. The GLSEN [Gay Lesbian Student Education Network] is a network that aims in educating the youth about homosexuality. One decade ago there were few groups of GSA’s [Gay Straight Alliances] set up in schools, and the public didn’t really care about the situation. Now there are about 3,000 GSA’s set up in high schools, and homosexuality is a growing concern and issue. It’s great to know so many others feel strongly about this issue and find a need to educate the country. It’s quite outrageous what some might do to homosexuals just because of who they are. An insurance company no longer was to insure a couple because they were lesbians. Now the couple is pressing charges against the company. Luckily, in many states there are anti-discrimination laws in which gives protection to gays and lesbians. Yet, that still may not stop teens from harassing their homosexual peers, and it is sometimes even worse in some cases if the person is of a different race or religion. If we continue to have groups and individuals who are to stand up for gay and lesbian rights we could help prevent such ignorant actions. In conclusion, if society is walking the path to social acceptance and tolerance we may have a brighter future and gain more rights for gays and lesbians. Of course, this is a very controversial topic. Some religious groups may disagree strongly with homosexuality because it’s not approved of, but we are not governed by religious laws so we are free to love who we choose, even if they differ from us. To be denied marriage to the one you love and make commitments to because you are in a a non heterosexual relationship does not mean their relationship lack any qualities of a heterosexual couple. I had read in an article that the reason some religions had disapproved of homosexuality because the marriage could not produce offspring. To me, it would not matter what race, gender, or religion the person was because in the end, love is love. I was on quite a roll, sorry I think it might be longer than a page. ![]() |
