So here I am, basically a newbie to this forum, although I post on several other forums and have done so for some considerable time.

Even though I have only been on here for a few days, I have already fallen foul of some of the 'Keepers of Good English' brigade who have flamed me for using textspeak, which is what most people here in the UK tend to use.

Now, I'm not bothered by sarcastic responses, but I do take offense to 14-16yo kids patronising me, telling me to learn how to spell. How lame is that. wacko.gif

Many people, even adults have terrible problems with spelling, not me by any means, but to have these spelling Nazis trying to appear to be so superior is just pathetic and does not give me respect for them. tongue.gif

It appears that textspeak is regarded as only suitable for the kiddie pre-teens/dunces and that everybody else must conform by spelling correctly and posting using the correct syntax. otherwise to face flaming and have their actual post content ignored.

The CB Head Honcho should have an obvious edict about this. If there is one, its not very obvious as I (briefly) read through CB rules on posting as every forum is different. But I have no problem with posting in 'Correct English' and will do so for this forum as it is appropriate.

really, its just a matter of something being readable. iF yEw tYpErrZZ lYkE dIz, pPl cNT riLLiE fIggURRZ oUt wUtt dA hEkkz U iZ lYKe sAyINz. I mean, I use thing I like u instead of you all the time, and no one seems to care. just dont mae it complicated. Really its just condieration for your reader. And proper english appreciated too, as in use your grammar skills. Dont is beez talkinz for to in a way be at that people cannot be gettings. lol. It shoes some sense of maturity. Thats why you will see a lot of people making fun of a topic by going OH EM GEE I lyKe tOtaLLy lUvvErs pArIs hIltOn OMG OMGOMG OGMOG OMG !!!!!111!!1!11

Because stupid people write like that. And if you are like me and make an inhuman amount of typos because ur fingers are slower than your brain, just go back and edit your post, for the sake of others.

I totally agree with you Karamelle, but I got slagged off for using 'c u 2' or 'ur' or 'newayz', or '@ wot point'.... I also believe that 'Oh bOi DaT waZ LYke sooo KeWl' is completely pointless and is in fact gibberish. I would never post in that form, but did not think I would be SO slated for minor and obvious phonetic abbreviations.

Yes, I also would slag off stupid dumb-ass unintelligible crap, but to be so prissy and pedantic just shows to me that some here really do not have a life.

Anyway, thanks for the post. cool.gif

Yeah, it's just so people can read what they have to type.
And anyway, I think it is easier to type normally instead of doing the whole internet slang and textspeak thing. Plus it'll help by getting people used to typing correctly, it's just a good thing.

I don't expect it from people still learning English, but some of those who already do don't even bother being kind to others. I don't bother to read the post if they don't type in proper English. I mean, they don't need my help if they're not going to be friendly. Yes, I think of it as TYpIng Lyk Dis is stOOpid =/= friendly.

thanks for the post gotnoheart.

You're a Xanga Staff member. I'm not sure if that really means anything in terms of actually being able to do anything about this by communicating with CB Staff regarding this issue.

By looking to inform Posters perhaps with a link to the passage in CB Rules of Posting (and since it is apparent that this is an issue, if there isn't one, it should be inserted) will surely reduce incidences.

If this is ignored then a Warning is appropriate, just as happens on other forums for inappropriate behaviour; this would maybe cut down on the incidences of ridiculous Textspeak and perhaps as Honorguard suggested, get posters used to good typing.

If this was introduced and generally accepted then threads would read far more smoothly and would not involve Members slagging other Members for this issue as it would be the Mods responsibility to enforce this and everyone would know that. cool.gif

Peace Out

you know honestly, it the anal epople that take it so far. I mean, most people use laugh out loud, and thats internet speak and no one complains. So I mean, it goes both ways. Just try to keep the readers in mind when you type. everyone has a style, its stupid for people to expect you to completly conform. No one speaks in complete proper english, so why should you have to type that way? I mean, I rarely capitalise everything I should, and I don't always use proper punctuation, because I type conversationally, that same way it would come out if I was speaking. So yeah. Just ignore the really anal ones. If they get onto you for saying "u' are cool" or whatever, it still wont get you kicked off or anything. Just don't be annoying lol.

Not all members do that.. I can see how they can become annoyed though, imagine trying to help someone out in Xanga Help over there and they're replying consistently in short posts that take more than 5 minutes to read. "i sTiLL duN get itz the pag3 iz NoT lo4din` 4 sUm r3asOnz"
There is no rule in CB that says you must post in proper English though. People just become too anal. Something that irks me however is when people TYPE IN ALL CAPS (AND ZER0'S) MAKING THEM SEEM DEMANDING F0R A S0LUTI0N BECAUSE THEY'RE T00 G0DDAMN UNPATIENT. rolleyes.gif

P.S. See how much Xanga Staffers see this issue around CB as well? Don't think less of them/us because they're/we're called "Xanga" Staff. wink.gif

thanks for the post angawhomps. No, No!! I would never think any less of any Staff Mambers on any Forum. You all have a valuable job to do. I only asked for Xanga to communicate with CB because after all, for all I know you're based in NYC and CB staff could be in Atlanta and never the twain shall meet (except 'those' Xmas parties!) and I just assume, perhaps incorrectly, that there are demarcation lines. But its all cool.

They aren't talking about typing perfectly!

They're saying they dont like it when people type shit like this, LyK OnGsH! i ToTaLlY DUnnO Wat ThE HeWwell uR TaWlkIn BoUt!

Its annoying and no one can understand it, it takes about 5 minutes to read when people are constantly typing like that.

I could read what you said.. mostly..

But I do personaly find chat speak of all types besides 'brb and lol' annoying. But thats just because I Role Play and I'm used to being forced to type properly.

But I deal with it.. but I cant stand when people type every other letter upper case and crap like that.

Goodness, there isn't a need for proper English in an online forum. Perhaps we should expect it, however, as James said before due to common courtesy. But surely there isn't need to write correctly when the majority of the English speaking population have a hard time with it. If we were an educational institution, then I would see the light of your concern, but here, in an online forum, the concern seems overly solicitious. I would appreciate good grammar, but it needn't be made a big deal. People who aren't well-versed with the language will be ostracized.

Well actually jooleeah, since this is apparently quite an issue on this Forum, if the Administrators decided that they had seen enough poorly presented postings and the frustrations that it caused Members by detracting from posts, then it would not be a problem to introduce measures to advise all Members that only proper English spelling/syntax would be acceptable, with a small amount of abbreviation, and that after a polite reminder, a warning would be issued followed by a total ban, then yes, it could be introduced.

There are many forums out there that do not entertain anything other than the most basic of textspeak. A warning followed by a ban is usual.

Personally, I'd love it if everyone typed perfectly or as close to perfect as possible.... But I know that's not going to happen and it shouldn't be up to me.
I'm fine with "u" and "ur" and stuff like that, but when you start mixing 1337 with regular typing and sticky caps and fake words and shit like that... Yeah. That's just too much.

I'm fine with textspeak like taking away a few letters to make the word shorter, taking the "g" off of "ing", raplacing "s" with "z", and some of the common things like "lyke", "Neways", "b4" and so on. But it makes it really hard to read when you just add in new letters to different words and capitalize random letters, which makes it all the more challenging.

What is hard about typing in regular english...see its easy

I went to school today vs. I went 2 skool 2day.

A alot of people on this forum have never met each other personally. So a lot of judgement (well not really judgement, but you know what I mean) comes from how you present yourself on a forum. And how you present yourself plays a role in how people precieve you. Whether you arguements will be taken seriously, etc. This includes the way you type. I am personally not usually the one to call out someone on their typing unless its horribly bad. But seeing that english is the main language spoken by most people here, it really shouldnt be that hard to formulate coherent sentences

It really is. I see some poeple typing "yOoh" as you. I mean, sometimes I type it as 'u' to be easier, but really, "yooh?" ew.

And I don't think we need PERFECT english with spellcheck and all of them. There has been a lot of topics on "TyPiiNg LyK DiiZ iZ RiidicUl0z" and stuffs. But I think some people should learn to type or else they're gonna type like that when they're older. I don't think they would get much respect if they do when they're older. They don't now.

I assume that you read the complete thread in which case you should be able to understand that this is not my opinion. It is what has been made apparent to me by other posters in other threads that I posted on because of the way that I posted when I first came onto the forum.

Every Forum is different and it is apparent to me that I just happened to take interest in posting on threads which already displayed a very truncated textspeak style, which lead me to believe that this was generally acceptable on CB.

It is obvious now that posters are able to type in any style that they want as it is not Moderated, but they will have to expect to be flamed if that style is not deemed acceptable by other posters on a thread.

This is why I added a poll to this thread once I could see that it was generating some interest.

I agree too. It should be more clearable to understand what they meant. I do hate those gangsta like words where they use "yew R sho aweshum!" Well I understand some, but bit annoying to read. Well I try my best on grammars. The only thing I'm bad is grammars. I messed up with past tense these days. It's just that I type so fast and don't think what I'm typing sometimes. That's why sometimes I go back and edit it if I did something wrong. But even if I checked it again, there are still errors. I can't make perfect grammars. I don't think anyone can except those English professors.

I would just like to say something.

Everyone in CB who talks ghetto just... stop. Please. It's so annoying. Especially if you don't live in the ghetto. I mean, soon, hillbillies will start talking ghetto! I live in the ghetto and look how I type! I talk like this, as well. North Philly, baby. Come join it. You'll see ghetto there. The people in the burbs talk more ghetto than the people in the ghetto because the suburbian "ANGSTAS!!!" try wayyyy too hard. I mean, I'm told that I have a Philly accent. But that's just how the words I say sound. Not that I'm saying "My homie G, dawg FO' SHIZZLE!!!!" mellow.gif

I think proper FULL English is the best.

You don't need to type in full English if you don't want to, but it will be your fault if people misunderstand you. TyPiN lYk DiS is too confusing, don't you think so?

I agree that there needs to be something done. Yeah, even I misspell words. I mean, I'm not the greatest speller. I think thats fine. I don't like sticky caps, or typing wierd.

And, how is it easier to type lyke than like? Same number of letters?? Anyway, I don't type like that. I type like this all the time, and what I typed that was "different" was harder than the rest. Maybe it's just because I dont use it as often.

It's so hard to type and even harder to read.
So, for the love of God, just learn to type properly. ;]

I agree with everyone in this topic. It's not worth your time reading posts that are l1Ke TH1Z. It takes up like 10 min. of your life trying to read that crap. I did do it when i was first introduced to AIM or the internet, but it has disimproved my ability to spell correctly these days. You'd see some '1's' on my essays and etc.. You probably get millions of headaches trying to read that stuff.

hmmm...seems like the vast majority who have replied to this thread are sick & tired of ridiculous textspeak...good spelling and grammar is all down to education, so we should excuse that up to a point when its quite obviously not done just to piss others off using a lazy style.

So why does the Admin not do something about it? Surely if CB was cleaned up a bit, it would make everyone's enjoyment in reading and posting, improve.

To have a self policing Forum just leads to petty arguments and the threads get ignored.

If you care that much, like I now do, pm the Admin with this thread title. If it is shown how much people care about this, attention might be shown and something done about it.

I agree, you cant force them. But if there was a restriction on using textspeak in this Form and people were warned about it by the Mods, but continued in flagrant disregard of the Forum rules, then a ban would be in order.

Thats how you get conformity. And as for Freedon of Speach infringement. Not in the least. People are free to post whatever is deemed PG-13, but it is the style that they post in that is in question here and restricting it does not infringe with anybody's rights under any constitution.

Also, please remember, this Forum is available in every country that allows the use of the Internet. We are not, thankfully, all governed by the Constitution of the USA.

It does get annoying when people write their comments up filled with mistakes, in a way it shows you dont care. I know we all make mistakes but come on some of them are horrible.

Sorry, but I just take it as if the person is trying to be quote-unquote ghetto if they use "textspeak." I've never heard anyone use that term before, but I understand what you're getting at. Although it does bother me at times, I don't go all out flame-mode just because someone can't type. Rather, I try to contribute an answer to whatever question they're asking, ONLY if what they're asking is coherent. You see, even with "textspeak," what those who use that type of language are still capable of forming coherent messages.

There's a difference between "OoOo sHe WuNnA gHeT DoWnZ N MeEH FiNk iSh LyKe WoAhZ N ShTuFf" (I suck at forming incoherent phrases, sorry) and "He LuV'd MeEh En MeEh BrOkE hIs H34rt. MeEh FeEhL sHo SoWwIe."

^ Even if you don't notice it first, there's a noticeable difference between the first phrase (incoherent, imho) and the second phrase (sound it out and it sounds coherent). I don't mind as long as a certain point is addressed or a certain question is being answered that people can easily contribute to. I'm just tired of people only pointing out that they didn't even read the thing because it was incoherent to them. If they didn't even read it, there's not much use in posting. It's not going to change anything. I even had to close a topic a few days ago because there were 10 replies saying virtually the same thing (you can't type; I don't understand; I didn't bother to read)

The only reason why I it doesn't bother me so (as much), that people type in textspeak, is that I used to type like that back in 6th and 7th grade (4-5 years ago). I'm capable of understand what those who type in textspeak are trying to say. I find it rude when someone has a major problem and all someone can say is "Sheesh, learn to spell" or "learn to type" or "I didn't bother reading because everything you said was stupid." I'm not pointing any fingers, but I've seen this happen before. Actually, not just on createBlog, but it's happen a number of times on cB.

Doesn't bother me that much--as long as they're not breaking the rules (such as spamming and flaming).

Although it should be enforced, people are entitled to their own internet lingo. Even if it is annoying to others, it's not something that could be easily stopped.

ah. . . who brought up this topic again?

No matter what you do there will be people in the world who type with the mixture of caps and lowercase in a single word. However, most of them do grow out of this phase. It only lasts for a short amount of time anyway.
If it bothers you, don't read it. Or let me rephrase that: Try to read it.
It doesn't exactly show maturity when they type like that, but again, they usually grow out of it. Kinda like when girls grow out of dotting their i's with hearts or bubble circles. (c'mon, I know a lot of you have done that in elementary school).
So, yes then a new generation of typers emerge that can't type whatsoever, so the best thing to do is ignore it and wait until they grow out of it.
If it bothers you so much, well...I guess the best thing to do would be hang around places were you are able to find less kids that type like that.

I think for people that type badly often should get warned.

It gets annoying, honestly.

It gets annoying when I have to read like a whole paragraph when it's in stickycaps/all caps/or when numbers are subsituted for letters. At times, online I would talk to some of my friends using stickycaps just for the heck of it. I don't know how they do it. It takes me forever. It's easier for me to type normally, but it could be different for others. They might find typing in stickycaps to be easier. =|
