dubbed is total crap, and they always get the voices all mixed up. I took japanese in hi school and we would watch movies in japanese, usually without subtitles, which sucked cuz we didnt know it that well, so then I went and bought the whole studio ghibli collection on dvd with the english subtitles and I looooovvveee watching them!! Its especially nice to know what the heck they were talking about. and its good because I can still remember a lot of the language by hearing it and seeing the words at the same time.

it depends i mean like i dont think the japanese artists (in my opinion no offense) dont care about the voice of a character. casue they usually have a scrawny annoying voice and dont care about relating the voice to the character.

Englished dubbed animes are much better to me. but if it is a real movie with people in it i prefer it with subtitles cause english dubbed people are so nasty for example "VOLCANO HIGH" when they played it in mtv. it was just ew lol.

but i prefer english dubbed in animes cause i think americans carefully consider what kind of voice they put into their characters.

I personally don't care, but I'm a bit more comfortable on English audio. Sometimes I'm not fast enough when I read something, so I have to pause, read the subtitle, and look where the characters are and yea. But I don't mind. As long as I get my anime. happy.gif

there's something awkward about dub. when i hear it... i somehow feel uncomfortable. like i'm not myself anymore. besides, the japanese language sound so beautiful! Why take it away?

one day i hope to learn and understand japanese so i won't have to use the subtitles anymore. happy.gif

I, myself, love subtitles, because I'm a fast reader and it doesn't bother me when the text goes by quickly

But for some people, they don't like to read and, moreorless, want to watch the show instead of reading it...

That's the only upside to dubbing, I see nothing else that's useful from it.

I STRONGLY AGREE!! The nihon language IS kawaii!!! I'm learning my myself. I know and read some of it, i talk japanese to my friends, sometimes they know what i mean. And the other people around me are like "speak english!!" and then i reply in nihon again. I like to get on their nerves!

one prolem. It may be the original sondtrack but you have to think of it this way. It is not the original intent. The japanes epeople did not have to read their anime. so technically it is not the original. start understanding and speaking japanese and then you can get the original experience. I am a big fan of the translated subbs. but I am just saying that the dubbs may not be al that bad.

I kinda prefer subtitle.

my experience is most dubbed versions have very annoying or exagerated voices

We have this channel over here which shows Anime 24/7, early on everything is subtitled but gradualy everything became dubbed and it was pretty terrible, shows had the same set of voices, some sounded too exagerated.

but in defence of dubbed. sometimes subtitles are too fast to read and kids might have a hard time following the story.

Their was over here in the Philippines, it was called Animax but that was when it first came out. Gradually after a few months of launch they dubbed everything except for a few shows they show around the 11-12 pm slot

^Agreed. I don't really care. Even though the voices are messed up and it looks very unnatural, it's easier to understand in your own language. But Japanese is such a beautiful language and sometimes it's a lot better in Japanese + subtitles because it's the movie/show the way it was made originally (and how it's supposed to be). They really need to reconsider some of the voice actors when they decide to dub anime with english (Toboe was played by a girl huh.gif ).

Definately Japanese subtitled... The voice actors actually have emotion in their voices while American one's try and fail. Also, in dubs, names are pronounced horribly wrong and it pisses me off.

The only show I can happily watch in a dub is Gundam Wing. They stayed really close to the character's personalities and to the tone of the Japanese voice actor's voices.

Actually, for me, it depends soully on the anime. Sometimes it's better with subtitles like.. umm.. the Yu Yu Hakusho MOVIE, where they don't use the original voice casting and sometimes it's better in english(dubbed) because the voices fit and the anime isn't completely ruined. ~Shrugs.~ Just depends sometimes on the anime.

And as for squashie's comment.. no, it doesn't totally ruin the anime. Sometimes, yes, I will agree on sometimes, but no, not all the time. If you think so on that then you need to watch more anime, my friend.

It gives those who aren't quick enough to read subtitles the chance to know what's going on and hear it as well, so they don't have to sit and pause, read the subtitles and the play again. So it helps people like that.

Reason dubb'd anime's piss us off is because we first watch the anime in japanese and get use to their voices and notice the high pitch voices and such. so when we hear a english guy trying to replace that it makes us mad. But most of the time if you just watch a anime without watching the japanese version even once then you won't be as mad with it.

I agree. When I first started watching anime I liked the dubs better, because it's easier for me to listen to english. But after awhile you get used to hearing the Japanese. It's a completely different language with different nuances. It depends on how carefully the dubs were done. And the same goes for subbing. If you DL an anime with shitty subbing where the sentences make almost no sense because the grammar is so bad, it's just as bad as watching dubbing where the voices are all wrong. Like...The Cst Returns, I think they did fabulously with the dubbing on that one. And it doesn't matter a whole lot if you read the subtitles or watch it dubbed, because they subbed it with the same script they used when they dubbed it.

Watching it in Japanese is also good because you can audibly learn the language. I've picked up a few phrases and words here and there. I like to turn some on for my daughter and just let her watch the Japanese. She doesn't care one way or the other.

Point being: does it matter, as long as you love anime. There will always be the two ways of doing things. Who cares? Concentrate more on spreading the anime love!! lol

Japanese Naruto

Toonami (US) Naruto

XDDDD

Not only dubb kills, editing the show is another thing. I still think thats funny how they changed the kunai and blood with an apple and a lunch box. Who knows maybe they'll go Naruto Uncut in CN like what they did to DBZ

It would be nice to just see everything the way it is even when they dub it in English. Seriously , there are wayy more worse things in tv why would they have to censor everything down?

Yeah, when I got the Inuyasha movie 4 the subtitles were kinda messed up and it's funnu because a friend put the subtitles ^^

And it's how I watch all the inuyasha movies, in english first then Japanese, it's fun to see how the subtitles say it's different that what they say in the english version.

Subtitles are alwayz better for me because the first anime I watched was subb'd and the most recent one I watched was subb'd I just watch everything subb'd and got use to looking at the picture and reading it at the same time =P.

But sometimes if I watch a anime dubb'd that I haven't watched in japanese yet it doesn't really matter to me.

I just buy the DVDs, so depending on the anime, I can watch it either subbed or dubbed. I prefer dubbed though, because I don't like to read a TV show/ Movie.

I actually really like the english audio. (When it is done well), I don't like reading the movie too much, if i want to read i'll go get the book or manga, you know. I like the english audio. The fruits basket dvds are pretty nice too. Good voices that fit the characters (for most of them), it was done well :)

I hate the dubbed version, although when you go with the subtitles, you usually get some interesting words. i.e. - cuss words. That's the only thing I don't like about hte subtitles. But, when you have those, nothing is lost in translation.

It depends, Gravitation's English dub sucked, but Trigun's and Cowboy Bebops were really good!

I prefer subbed, because when they dub the anime, the voices they choose aren't very good most of the time, and they always have to talk to fast so it looks/sounds stupid. I don't mind watching it dubbed, though.

I, for one, like dubs. It's because I appreciate them more, I suppose. wink.gif Funamation does a wonderful job of matching the voices to the characters and preserving plot in a way that non-Japanese will understand. And as bad as Naruto was, you must admit that Naruto is a hyper tween. His voice fits even if you don't like it.
Subs are boring to me, the don't carry the flavor of dubs. I find it funny that they translate things in vastly different ways. I also don't use the actual subtitles half of the time because they don't actually carry the meaning of the words coming out of a character's mouth most of the time.

I'm sorry, but I have to differ. They add more dialouge in the dubs because Japanese requires more syllables. "Watashi wa Reili desu" takes more time to say than "I am Reili". Atleast for me it does.

Subbed fo sho.

Dubbed if I'm too lazy to read.

If there's some high action scene or something I'll just watch it dubbed then. Having to read "You killed my brother!! You must die!" can be lame. Takes out the "emotion."

he sounds like smiggly when he usually talks like a tough man. T_T

and I LOVE when they use this cute accent in japanese. it's so freaking cute

I actually prefer dubbed voices. :o

Don't get me wrong, sometimes the voices are horrible, but I hate it when I have to avert my attention from the anime itself so I can read subtitles. There are some animes that have excellent dubbed voices, but it's just that most people believe that dubbed is t3h ebil, so they don't even bother. :(

I'm all for dubbed voices. thumbsup.gif

SUBBED! there's no way I could watch dubbed anime. it's too painful. >.>

plus, I can't believe some people find it hard to read and watch at the same time. it's like..barely multitasking. plus you improve your reading skills and japanese!
