For those of you local to the Atlanta area, you've probably heard the story of the girl killed in a car accident yesterday.

"LAWRENCEVILLE — A teenager died on Interstate 85 on Monday after her car was rear-ended by a van, causing it to burst into flames.
The victim was 17-year-old Kelley Halpern of Lawrenceville. Halpern was a student at Berkmar High School, said Officer Valerie Southard, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Authorities said Halpern was driving a Honda Civic north on I-85 just before Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road at 2:50 p.m. when she slowed her car for traffic. A white van traveling behind her struck the rear of the Civic, thrusting the car forward to collide with a Ford Explorer in front of her, said Sgt. Dan Huggins of the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Halpern became trapped inside the wreckage, Huggins said. Before the other two drivers or emergency responders could extricate her, the car caught fire and exploded into flames. She died at the scene.
Officer L. Yates of Gwinnett police was one of the first officers to arrive.
“She was still alive when Suwanee police got here,” Yates said. “She was panicking, trying to get out, but she couldn’t.”
Yates said both the driver of the van and the Explorer had also tried unsuccessfully to free her from the wreckage.
The driver of the van, Hong Kim, 59, of unknown residence, was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with injuries that were not life threatening. The driver of the Explorer was not injured.
Huggins said charges are pending against Kim.
Motorists on I-85 north experienced long delays between 3:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday as authorities investigated and cleared the accident scene. Two left lanes of the highway were closed, according to officials at the Georgia Department of Transportation."

That's horrible. We weren't very close, but we'd pass each other in the halls everyday and smile and say hi. She was just that nice to everyone.

It angers me how my school isn't doing anything to remember her other than a moment of silence. Dumbasses.

She was only seventeen and it wasn't even her fault. She died from the car's flames.

I couldn't help but cry when I found out last night and this morning when I got to school knowing she won't be there anymore.

Kids, be careful. Even if you're driving alright, it's too often that you're in an accident because of someone else's dumb mistake. Take it easy and God Bless.

RIP, Kelley. We love you.

Something like that happened to a girl I was friends with. A guy ran a red light and hit her car that her sister was driving. Her sister came out unharmed, she had her neck broken and died on impact. She actually went to my school, so since I knew her and her friends, I was the one who had to tell the summer school class. I cried tha whole day. Its was horrible. Its a crime when people die so young. Especially when it isnt their fault. And all the guy had to say was that he was in a hurry. Thats so sick. No place u need to be is ever worth someone life. She was only 16. I'm gonna cry just thinking about it. I'm really sorry for your loss...

That happened to a woman in my town. There is still a burn spot on the road. I can't drive over it. I have to get into the other lane.

Anyway, yeah, It's very sad when people die, espically at such a young age. I know when a boy died at my school because of heart failure, we made a very big thing of it. 75% of the school left the day of his funeral to pay their respects. RIP.

I knew her. She was my best friend for an upwards of ten years. We grew apart in the last year, sadly. We had some difficulties that never were resolved; I kick myself every time I think about it.

Her funeral was today. It was a beautiful ceremony filled with loving memories of Kelley Halpern and her family. Her brother sang with the Berkmar choir. It was so beautiful.

I miss her. I really do. I had always heard of people regretting never having resolved a friendship after a loved one passes on; I just never thought I'd be the one doing the regretting.

But, I need to make one thing clear.

She was not alive when the police came. The autopsy proved that she died on impact. She was not killed by the flames. Her parents specified that at the funeral

Whoa, you go to Berkmar?!

But wow. I'm very, very sorry for your loss. Wow. I really wish I knew what to say. I wish I'd gotten to know her better, obviously she was very loved.

I wish I could've made it to the funeral.

It's horrible. This is making me cry all over again.

I actually don't go to Berkmar. I'm in the Parkview area, but I go to a small private school in Buford (not two minutes from the scene of Kelley's wreck). I went to church with Kelley and her family. I, in fact, just got back from church. Her family was there today. Amazing. They hadn't gone to church in about a year, and they came to today's morning service. It was very moving to have them there.

Here, I'll give the obituary address from the Atlanta Journal Constitution's website: http://www.legacy.com/atlanta/LegacySubPag...ersonID=3450346

She was very loved. I'm acutally kind of surprised to have found a thread about this. I was searching google for some more insight on the legal proceedings about the wreck and stumbled on this thread. It's very nice to know that she was loved by so many people and that condolences are sent to her.

You can actually make a donation to The Kelley A. Halpern Memorial Fund, c/o Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene, 701 Cole Drive, Lilburn, GA 30047. That's my church, by the way. The fund is going towards purchasing lots and lots of books. Kelley loved to read and loved to discuss her opinions on the books she read.

Take a look at her obituary.

Wow, that's amazing. I'm happy that her family went to the service. I hope they continue to go, it might be good for them.

Again, I'm very sorry. I wish I could help. I'd love to donate to the fund, I'll definitely make a note of it. I'll be sure to pass it on to some of my friends from school as well.
